Van Marwijk: Handling disappointment is key towards Gold

March 27th, 2009 | By: Jan | 16 Comments »

Bert lectures, the group listens…

Never before was there an Oranje team manager with so many fit internationals before two crucial qualification games.

So, this week Bert van Marwijk really strongly requests a high level of acceptance from his players. “We will never win the World Cup if certain players won’t be able to accept to be benched.”

Van Marwijk doesn’t see his situation as a luxury problem, with all the talented creative players in his group. “You can skip the word “problem”. To me, it’s purely a luxury. I don’t lose any minute of sleep over it. But, players will be disappointed. That’s how it is. And they are allowed to be angry as long as they accept it. These things are part of the deal.”

The 21 player selection has eight renowned creative players. “And only four will start,” said Van Marwijk. “So, four players will have to digest bad news.” But, in reality it’s only one player who will be disappointed. Affelay and Babel will accept their role as a sub. Van der Vaart also surrendered to the fact, knowing he has hardly played at Madrid. So, it’s between Hunter, Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and Kuyt. The latter was the only one not totally fit. “Dirk had a hamstring issue, but a minor one. He trained full on on Thursday again.”

Oranje trained behind closed doors on Thursday. “I do think the players know who will play. I only want to say that Stekelenburg will start. Andre Ooijer is also fit, he isn’t bothered by that groin anymore.”

Van Marwijk does have more and more alternatives for the holding positions on midfield. He is happy with Van Bommel and De Jong, but Schaars and De Zeeuw are also reaching a very high level at AZ this season. “I’m blessed with the way more and more players develop themselves, mainly mentally, for the big stage. De Jong was a question mark for a while, but he saw the light. Schaars was injured for a long time and De Zeeuw seemed to drown in that bad season AZ had last year. The way these players fought back is very impressive and also inspiring.”

Oranje can put Scotland on eight points when Holland wins, this Saturday. “And that’s the whole point. We will go for three points, but we will have to be cautious in our build up. Scotland comes to defend. They will wait for us to make a mistake. We need to be on our toes…”

ian: I’ve found a site that advertises showing free sport (including the coming qualifying matches live). I’ve only watched the stream during weekdays so far and only saw news, no live sports, but there were commercials saying they would show the qualifiers including Holland-Scotland. The site is down at the moment though, at least on my pc.

http://freesport.110mb.com/

It’s called Satenta sports news or something, look for the link on the right(if the site is up again). No registration required.

There’s another site for betting that also shows live sports streams, but that one you have to register an account (use some fake info, choose payment through bank transfer or cheque or something like that) and if you don’t spend anything you can only use the account for 1 or 2 sessions before it get’s blocked/cancelled at which time you need to make a new fake account to be able to login and watch the streams again, so a little bit annoying (but your streams won’t get interrupted while you’re logged in, even if your account gets cancelled):

Come to think of it, your account at that bet365 site might last longer if you manage to use some info that can be validated automaticly, like a real existing adress and the right postal code belonging to that adress, something like that.

I usually didn’t bother, just made a new “free” account – don’t you hate how business have changed the meaning of the word “free” on the internet? Why on earth do they need my creditcard information if it’s so called “free”? Bastards -

If everything else fails and you can’t watch the game properly, here’s a link that will show it live: http://www.iraqgoals.net/ It is on channel 4 I believe

Check that, it actually is on Channel 2.

Quality is sometimes an issue, but at least it is live (or so it claims) and gives you something to do.

Be cautious all you want…We want a win, Period! A tie will be pathetic to say the least.
Hopefully the 1,700th article will be a celebration of our win!

@Bart: Not many countries have a B team any more, so the next best thing is the U21.

The reason we have a B team is because we didn’t qualify for the European U/21 championships which we won 2 years in a row. It was then decided to form the B Team mainly younger players on the verge of the A team. We therefore play many European U/21s who will vie for the championship this summer. Italy U/21 on Tuesday.

I’m sorry I didn’t inform you better on Nederland B. Tried to, but didn’t have enough time and wanted to focus on Oranje… Next time, ok?

Oh ok, but don’t we have a U21 team? Or did we get rid of that when we didn’t qualify?
