Uruguay – Holland; all you need to know

flags

Estadio Centenario in Montevideo is the venue of the friendly between Uruguay and Holland. The sixth time these two “small” football nations meet. Oranje won both World Cup games ( 2-0 in 1974, goals by John Rep) and the 3-2 in South Africa.

Here’s a couple of tidbits between the Light-blues ( Los Celestes) and the Oranges ( Oranje).

URUGUAY

* Uruguay beat Oranje on the way to Olympic fame in 1924 and 1928. In 1928, Oranje was host at the Amsterdam Olympics.

* The other games were on the Mundialito of 1980, a celebration tournament for the 50est birthday of the World Cup. Uruguay won with 2-0, and Victorino scored both goals. Not the same Victorino as the current player with the same name. He’s the old Victorino’s nephew.

* This is the first home game Uruguay plays since the warm up for the World Cup. They played seven friendlies since the World Cup but all away. The last home game was against Israel ( 4-1) in May 2010.

* Since 1992, Uruguay hasn’t lost a game against European opponents. The last European nation that won in South America was Germany in 1992. Only Argentina and Brazil won in Uruguay in the last seven years. Both games were World Cup qualifiers.

speler uru

* Diego Forlan could be playing his 75th intenrational. Only Rodolfo Rodriguez played more games ( 78). Forlan scored 29 goals in 74 games, which is two less than all time scorer Scarone ( 31 goals in 52 games between 1917 and 1930)

* Edinson Cavani scored 26 goals in the Serie A for Napoli. It’s the most goals scored in the Serie A by a Uruguyan player.

* Luis Suarez played for Groningen and Ajax before he left for Liverpool. He scored 110 goals in all competitions for Ajax. Lodeiro only played 10 games for Ajax since January 2010. Eight in the Eredivisie and two in the National Cup games. He didn’t play one second in the last season. Both Lodeiro and Suarez missed the semi finals at the World Cup versus Oranje due to suspension.

HOLLAND

* The last win on South America soil for Holland was the 2-1 against Italy in 1978, at the World Cup.

* Oranje only lost two games under Bert van Marwijk. The 1-2 in September 2008 against Australia and the 0-1 against Spain in the World Cup finals.

* Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is Van Marwijk’s topscorer with 18 goals. Dirk Kuyt scored 13 times and Van Persie 12 times. Joris Mathijsen (36) and Dirk Kuyt (35) played the most games under Van Marwijk.

* Against Brazil, Tim Krul was the ninth player to make his debut for Oranje without having ever played a single game in the Eredivisie. Five of them, never ever played at top level on home soil: Willy Lippens, Wim Hofkens, Rob Reekers, Jordi Cruyff and Jerrel Hasselbaink.

* Of all the current Oranje players with more than 10 games behind their names, Maduro ( 16 games) and Schaars (14 games) never lost a game with Oranje. Erik Pieters can join them tomorrow.

robben marwijk

* Kevin Strootman could play his fourth international game for Holland as an Utrecht player, same number as Jan Wouters. Only Michael Mols ( 5), Michel Vorm ( 7) and Hans van Breukelen ( 7) played more games in orange as Utrecht players.

* Goalie Jasper Cillessen could be the first NEC player in Oranje since Denneboom’s friendly game in 2004, under Marco van Basten.

* Gregory van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong missed the semi finals against Uruguay as a result of suspensions.

* Gregory van der Wiel might go on a holiday with a silver plate. If Van der Wiel plays it will be his 25th game in Oranje. He made his debut in 2009 against Tunesia. Traditionally, players with 25 games are offered a silver plate with inscription.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar was disappointed after the Brazil game. As the top scorer he expected to start against Brazil. “Of course I felt I deserved more credits, but it’s the coach’ decision.”

Van Marwijk: “It’s good that Klaas Jan was disappointed and angry. That’s normal. I would not like it if he sat next to me with a satisfied look on his face. I can only start eleven players and I felt Van Persie was the right option for us.”

Van Persie was agitated after being subbed against Brazil and walked straight to the dressing room. Van Marwijk: “I think he was pissed off, but this time not with me. He felt Robben should have passed that ball and I can only support that. It’s fine that he’s annoyed. It was a friendly but this demonstrates that our players take these games serious.”

Van Persie ( a day later): “I shouldn’t have walked off like that. I should have stayed to support the team, but the second half was a bit frustrating and that one chance could have been enough to win it. We wanted to win it.”

BVM about the trip to SA after the game
It was very instructive, all have been enjoying themselves,on the penalty shootout : We wanted to win really, but it did not work. We have anyway no room for that cup, “Van Marwijk said smiling.”

Missed the match..I just read the post-match analysis on goal.com…as soon as i read the word penalty shoot-out…i knew uruguay would have won :D …we need to change that..i don’t see why we can’t score PK’s !…btw we are still unbeaten !.
.
PS :- @Jad was shocked when you mentioned India’s name :D ..Something I can be proud of as an Indian :P !

If he wanted to win why did he sub Kuyt going to penalties? Makes ZERO sense.

I like de Jongs passing game now. I think he gave 3 bad passes throughout the game. Importantly, he passed directly forward a lot and gave speed to the ball. Van Persie was very poor at keeping the ball. I think he lost possession the most, but he had some nice touches.

Why didn’t we want to attack? as soon as they scored (82′) our guys attacked and scored (90′)!. Piece of cake! but why the hell didn’t they go for the goal earlier?. Is it Bert’s decision or is it just because it was a friendly?.

I have the impression Bert wanted to experiment with our defense and our holding midfielders which is great. He made some substitutions but he didn’t change our forwards that way he’d see if our team had a positive or negative effect with the substitutions.

After thinking about the two friendlies and the penalty shootout I can’t help wonder… why is Van Persie still in the team?

Look at his performance over the past year or so. It’s time to let him go. The coach keeps trusting him and he keeps failing every single time. He can’t score, he’s not very creative up front and he hasn’t got the nerves to take a penalty shot.

I took another look at Schaars’ and Heitinga’s shots. Absolutely brilliant, top class, flawless penalty shots. And what do Van Persie and Elia offer us?

Van Persie needs to go.

Van Persie doesn’t need to go but yes you are right he doesn’t deserve to be treated as an “untouchable” because even Huntelaar has been better with the national team.

@OhYeah I agree. RVN should take Van Persie’s spot. Elia needs to go too…

Remember, these guys are on holiday. As long as no one gets his ankle broken, I’m happy.

They are not all on holidays. Only a few have their spots, the rest have to work hard and take advantage of their opportunities and Van Persie should’ve done that.

I liked Krul, Strootman, Bruma.

Also Schaars did well. The only thing that really makes me mad is why don’t we attack when we want to have ball possession we have it so I don’t understand.

bright future but Netherlands!!! :D

Bruma is exactly what Holland needs a defender that can PASS THE BALL. If we had a defense of VD Wiel, Van Bommel, Bruma, Pieters then we could possess the ball almost, almost as good as Spain does.

That defense
VDV De Jong
Robben Sneijder Afellay
Van Persie

What a line up, and I think Afellay has proven himself to be far better than Kuyt as well. He works as hard, and has so much ability. He has been our best player in both friendlies besides Strootman and Krul

hahahahaha van Persie needs to go… whatever dudes.
To me, thats as silly an argument as saying Kuyt needs to go. Also, you are dreaming if you think that he (one of the most prolific goal scorers in the EPL) would be dropped anyways.
But, I do agree with the sentiment that he definitely should NOT be a guaranteed starter, by any means. I would like to see BvM get a little more competition going with the strikers, but then again, we dont see what happens in training.

I am 100% with Finn, cant figure out what BvM was thinking pulling Dirkie out before PKs besides perhaps trying to get Elia a bit of confidence (not that scoring a PK can give you all that much) which obviously backfired…

Van Marwijk: “The lads were angry with Kuyt for scoring the equaliser. They wanted to go on a holiday and be out on the plane before the ash clud would get us stuck in Montevideo. I replaced Kuyt- our penalty expert – for lame Elia when I heard we didn’t have room in our luggage to take that cup home.”

Steve: i totally agree with you on van persie – saying that he needs to go is as silly as considering he’s untouchable. and it was only a friendly after a tyring season, with no consequences. he could have declared himself injured like sneijder and vdv did),but at least he went to south america.

surprise that vpersie missed the penalty, he normaly a good penalty taker. But its good that he failed in friendly match. He learnt from it, and become better when it matters in euro12.

Van Persie does not need to go. There’s a reason that he takes many PKs for Arsenal- he’s a good finisher who happened to miss one today. I think he’s in transition, growing into a team player from a bit of a prima donna that he was just a couple of years ago. He’s made some very smart and unselfish plays in front of the net, both for Oranje and for Arsenal.

As for Elia, I’m afraid that BVM put him in at the end to help build the lad’s confidence back with a PK, but that may have backfired.

Why do you people keep talking about Arsenal and EPL? No ones gives a damn if he scores 6 goals a match there. If he can’t do anything useful in Oranje then he needs to go and we need to bring in someone who doesn’t toddle around the field with a hurt face the entire match.

He is the most over-rated player in Oranje.

Bruma really impressed me he did really well. He seems like a complete defender.

Krul and Bruma really seemed really confident that leaves me very happy because we have a future!.

if krul was the ninth player, who are the remaining 3? bruma is one of them, but who else?

I agree with OhYeah

Van Persie is the most over-rated player in Oranje. He doesnt hold the ball – he holds up the play. He rarely scores important goals for Oranje and is simply too petulant. He has the attitude of Cruyff without the talent…….
