Sneijder makes Mourinho cry…

sneijder fifa

In a posh FIFA ceremony yesterday, Wesley Sneijder took the microphone – as your typical playmaker and leader – and entertained the masses while C Ronaldo and Xavi look in pure admiration ( with C Ronaldo probably also lust) to the little big man from Utrecht :-) .

Another man from Utrecht, a certain Marco van Basten, announced the names of the players in the FIFA team of the year. The former winner of the Ballon d’Or called up six Spanish internationals and the only Dutch player, Wes Sneijder.

50.000 players from all over the globe voted their faves for the different spots. Arjen Robben and Edwin van der Sar were nominated but didn’t make it.

Sneijder was interviewed on stage and when asked for his fave moment this year, he quipped: “That was my wedding day with my gorgeous wife”.
The audience laughed because the mc wanted to know his favorite football moment. Sneijder: “I have to say winning the Champions League, but I would rather have won the World Cup.”

Sneijder dedicated his great year to his former coach Jose Mourinho, in the audience, who clearly got overwhelmed by emotions when Sneijder honoured him.

FIFA Team of the Year:

Goal
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Spain)

Defense
Maicon (Internazionale, Brazil)
Lúcio (Internazionale, Brazil)
Gerard Piqué (FC Barcelona, Spain)
Carles Puyol (FC Barcelona, Spain)

Midfield
Wesley Sneijder (Internazionale, Holland)
Xavi Hernández (FC Barcelona, Spain)
Andrés Iniesta (FC Barcelona, Spain)

Attack
Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona, Argentina)
David Villa (FC Barcelona, Spain)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, Portugal)

Sneijder ended fourth in the list of World Footballer of the year. The Dutchman got 14.5% of the votes. Messi won the trophy with 22.7% of the votes. Iniesta ended number 2 ( 17,4%) and Xavi third ( 16.5%).

The team managers and skippers of the FIFA football nations got to vote as did a number of journalists.

To the surprise of many, Sneijder didn’t make it to the final three which garnered criticism from the likes of Platini, Mourinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Sneijder himself wasn’t too disappointed: “Listen, I’m simply privileged to be standing here. It’s my first time and it does taste like more. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta are incredible players and I’m honored to share the stage with them. I plan to come here more often.”

@goorange, The media country rep, is free to vote to whome ever he wants, only the coach cant vote for himself/his player, the captain cant vote for his himself/team mate or his coach

Mark van Bommel: “So my vote was ineligible? Ridiculous. They gave me the form and there was no instruction about new rules! No one informed me. And if I had to do it again, I’d vote for Sneijder and Robben again! If the question is: Best Player, period, you can fill in Messi for another 10 years. But the question was: best player of 2010! And in my book Sneijder and Robben had the most impact in 2010, both instrumental in the World Cup and Champions League. End of Story for me.”

@Jan, i think van Bommel just said what everyone here is thinking…Messi might be/is the most technically gifted player in the world but the award should be for player of the year (accomplishments, impact on team’s success, world cup etc.).

One thing i noticed is that a lot of people defended Iniesta’s inclusion into the top 3 by saying that he was the man of the match in a couple of spain’s matches at the world cup…what they forget to mention is that Sneijder was the man of the match in almost all the Oranje’s matches, besides leading Inter to the treble ofcourse.

most hated:

totti
ibrahimovic
schumacher
roy keane
lothar m.
maradona
C.Ron
balotelli

basically anyone with a huge ego who is arrogant and displays poor sportsmanship (cheaters or violent players trying to hurt others)

btw…never thought anyone would put puyol on this type of list, he fights hard and clean (well as clean as you are likely to get from a top flight defender), is loyal and down to earth (not egotistical/arrogant), oh and has awesome rocker hair which is a nice change from the high maintenance prima donnas that put more effort into their appearance than their tracking back/tackling (here’s looking at you CR). i thought if anyone on barca was dislikeable it would be iniesta (he did get Heitinga red carded in the finals and this is an oranje blog afterall) or Pique, who is never afraid to tell anyone who will listen how good Barca is, as if it all because of him.

Hey Jan – waters are moving south towards your area – stay high and dry. It looks like history repeats itself as several people died trying to help or take a last look at friends properties. Make sure your kids don’t play in what looks like “innocent” streams of water. Take Care Buddy !!! The worst for Brisbane is over at least.

I read an article on the internet that points out a very interesting fact: if you read the list of who vote who, according to the old format where only the sport journalist’s votes count, Sneijder will win (basically the France Football award, following Cruyff, Platini, Van Basten footstep) where Messi will win the FIFA player of the year (with the national coach and captain’s votes). Which smart ass that come up with the idea to combine these 2 awards?

With all the journalists’ votes: Sneijder is #1 with 320 points, Iniesta is #2 with 313 points, following by Xavi at #3 then Messi is #4.
Nothing against De Jong but he probably make the list of most hated player if he does not change the way he hurt other players.
I hope one day we have a player becoming FIFA president, not a business man. Beckenbauer is too old now. Platini is probably our best hope. Cruyff, well even if you offers him 10 millions a year, he probably turn it down as he probably dislike the way FIFA is. The only way he accepts the job as if he has the power to kick all of the current people out and bring in players, like what I read about Ajax now.

Hien, you should read ALL the posts here :) , Jan mentions the same thing a while back and I repeat the FIRST post on this article…….deja vu ?

I was just listening to the BBC about the Ballon d’Or and the Fifa Player of the year. It was confirmed that if the same people (journalists) who vote for the Ballon d’Or were the ONLY ones voting, Sneijder would have won the Ballon d’Or. It also mentioned what we all agree on, It’s the performance over the year – NOT WHO IS THE BEST FOOTBALLER IN THE WORLD – It’s like the Oscars which clearly states for the year “Best Performance by an Actor” – my 2.5 cents worth !!

@carlos, you are right, i think its good to have one combined FiFA Ballon Dor, but the rules of votes must be 50/50, 50% for the media as per and 50% for Coaches and captaines it will be fair and combined together.
as per the current rule or may be they have to rule out players/captains votes, and keep coaches only.

ballon dor award load factor =33% it must be 50%
Fifa award load factor = 66% its must be 50%

to be fair combined votes : coaches votes must be multiplyed by 0.5, captain by 0.5 and media by 1.

Jad, about your voting suggestion, you’d have to balance out the number of voters from each country to be equal to eachother for the voting to become more “fair”.

You can’t have all journalists voting since that would mean you’d have about a 100 english and spanish journalists voting for every 1 or 2 Dutch journalist(s) that is voting as well. And you’d still see the votes taking on the same shape as the demographics in football fanbases (meaning most will be voting for the topclub players cause they are most watched/admired/etc).

An example, Nasri won some award for best player for the first halve of the EPL, yet he has the same amount of goals as VDV but much less assists (5 vs 1).

Why does Nasri get the prize instead of VDV? Arsenal is more in the picture for the ones that are voting, more voters who know more about Nasri than VDV just because they’ve seen more Arsenal than Tottenham. Other factors apply naturally as well, but most of them tie into or relate to the fact that Arsenal is a bigger team than Tottenham and has better TV-ratings, or you could say the same demographics as the voters most of the time (people tend to forget that voters also have their favorite teams they like to watch and their favorite players).

With that last thing said, Vidic is my top dog in the EPL, has been ever since he arrived at MU. But who notices him…

I rate him equal to Stam. The Terminator. Not the young R.Stam (who is also pretty decent btw, also gone pretty unnoticed because he plays at a small club, should have been selected as backup to vdWiel instead of Bouhlaruz by now, but I’m drifting of my point, nvm).

One big factor I forgot to mention as an example on how playing at a big team imrpoves your chances of being recognized by voters, the big games. Everyone watches the big games and that includes the voters.

Thanks all! For your warm comments on our disaster here. And thanks Carlos for the heads up!

And it’s good to know that we all here ( and many with us) have given Sneijder the respect he deserves.

Due to work and circumstances here in Oz, I’m posting a bit less but once the whole circus starts again, I try to be back with one article per two days :-)

Welcome to the digital world: Rafael van der Vaart will start a new service on his website. All his individual moves ( dribbles, tricks, passes, shots, assists, goals) will be put on his site, with his personal commentary.

Once it’s happening, he’ll add his moves the day after a game. Cool eh?

Inter Milan wants to sign Feyenoord striker Castaignos this week for 4 mio euros and leave him in Rotterdam for another year.

AC Milan is preparing an offer for Mark van Bommel.

The Bayern skipper would prefer to play in the EPL himself.

Arsenal could use a player like MvB – they need an experienced head who will make sure the players are in the right frame of mind. I’d like to see him kicking some asses up and down the training pitch after they put in the kind of performance they just recently did against Ipswitch (and Leeds as well).
