Six reasons why Oranje will win the World Cup 2010

John: “I’ve got our mascotte guys, we can go!”
Dirk: “Huh? If you have the mascotte… Who do I have here?”
It’s a surprise for some ( Craig Foster, Johan Cruyff, Johan Derksen) but not for others ( yours truly, Finn, Carlos, Sonneveld, Tiju and most posters on our blog) that Holland will play the World Cup finals in Jo-burg. Six reasons the Naranja Mecanica (the Mechanical Orange) will win against the Furia Roja ( the Red Rage). That title will be ours.
1. We made our own luck
All goals in the semis kissed the post. Do we need to say more. This is Oranje’s tournament. We’ve got the wind in our sails. We may not have seen the Total Football of 1974, but when Robben and Sneijder score with headers, nothing will stop us! The tenacity and focus are comparable with the will to win of your 1996 volleyball team who won the Olympic Gold medals with a Spartan approach. Add to that the maximum yield of a not even great playing Sneijder – he’ll be named the Player of the WC on Sunday – and Holland will simply win the cup. Winning goal? One Robin van Persie.

2. The statistics
All eight qualification games and six world cup games won. Only one friendly lost with Bert on the bench. September 6 against Australia. And the last ten games all won. A tremendous report-card. With New Zealand, no other country didn’t lose at the World Cup. And this will remain that way!
Is that convincing enough? Should we have scored more? Would a poor team really have won against Brazil and Spain? Asking the question is answering the question.
3. Nelson Mandela and South Africa
Nelson Mandela will offer the World Cup to skipper Gio van Bronckhorst. The circle will be closed at this first World Cup on African soil. South Africa and Holland might not always have enjoyed a “good” bond but have embraced one another quite some time ago. The multicultural Oranje, with Ruud Gullit as their anchor, created a deep bond with South Africa and what better confirmation that Nelson Mandela being part of that celebration.

Dirk: “The fans always love it when men like me take their shirt off…”
4. The Dutch connection with Barcelona
Spain is Barcelona, bar Messi. On all the key positions it’s the Barca players ruling. Pique, Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets and Pedro. Villa will enter that world in the next season. And who founded that Barca-machine? Right, Cruyffie, Nees and Mr Michels. The Dutch connection. They moulded this Barca in the last years, with Frank Rijkaard in the mix as well. Which team is better equipped to unravel the Catalonian Gang? Right….
5. Physical condition
Dirk Kuyt told us yesterday, with pride, that the physios gave him his physical report card after Uruguay. “The stats were even better than after Brazil!”
Better? You’d expect worse, after a series of tough games, but Kuyt improves! And not just Dirk, the whole team! Van Marwijk: “We have top medical and physiological coordination from experts. We’ve prepared well for this mission.”

Ooijer: “And some fans like it when I show them Arjen Robben’s arse…”
6. The King of Espagna
He won’t be there, Juan Carlos. But the Dutch will sing for him in our National Anthem.
“The Prince of Orange, that is me without fear
the King of Espagna, I have always honored…”
And we will kick his arse, because:
“My shield and my faith areth thou O God, my Lord
I want to build on you, don’t desert me ever,
I will stay true to my belief and serve you eternally,
and will conquer the Tyrant and send him on his way…”
And that’s what happened. For a while, the Prince of Orange doubted who to serve bsck in 1570: the Dutch people or the King of Spain. He chose right. The Dutch people. And therefore we have a finals on Sunday. Time for a late revenge!

Our Prince Willem is so patriotic! Oranje scarf, orange bracelet, orange teeth…. ( thanks to Cup Fever).

Kunji is tipping netherlands will win 4-0 and jersey number 10 will be one of the socrers.
I’ve seen Webb make horrible biased decisions this year. I think he’s very much influenced by English public opinion and the media there. But it won’t matter. Nothing can stop us, not even a referee saying he’s going to watch a particular player (showing his negative bias towards vBommel, and you can bet your ass that he’ll ignore Robben getting hacked down a few times as well).
But that won’t hurt our guys. It’ll only make ‘em stronger, Robben will stay on his feet the next chance he gets and score a goal with his right foot stunning everyone (or right-footed assist on vPersie, even better).

426 years ago today, William of Oranje was assassinated in Delft — for having the courage to insist on religious freedom for the Dutch people, who were suffering under the Spanish Inquisition.
So the King of Spain put a bounty on his head. He was shot down in cold blood on July 10, 1584.
Tomorrow is July 11, folks.
Bloed Oranje!!!!!

And as for David Winner…. does he really post here??
I’ve missed it. Reading his book “Brilliant Orange” right now, to steel myself for the Final.
Hup, Holland…. and thank you, David!

Guys – I’ve been travelling Holland since the Cameroon game and I never thought that when my trip reached Amsterdam today the orange banners would still be flying. It’s a beautiful thing. Tomorrow I will descend on Museumplein with over 70,000 other oranje fans.
I feel the match really hinges on who performs better out of Villa-Robben and Xavi-Sneijder. The former are the real direct goal threats, the unstoppables, the latter control the game. Oranje can definitely win the battle of the wings though, and build from there. Can’t wait!

Yo Rob, tell us more how you like your trip. Is it what you expected?
@Adrian: top post my friend. I totally agree. I don’t think Spain and total football should belong in one sentence. I just watched their goals: 7 of the 8 ( or 6 of the 7 someting or other) came from counter attacks or mistakes of the opponent. Not from combination play.
I will repost some of David Winners posts here, ok?

Van Hanegem did do backheels, actually, even in WK matches.
Check out this mesmerising compilation of moments from Holland’s first match in the 1974 tournament

Want to know the essence of Total Football?
Here’s the whole thing in six minutes.
The flowing attacks, individual runs and Dutch habit of catching offside five and six Uruguayans at a time is all impressive enough.
But the best comes at 2 mins 50 seconds.
Out on the touchline, Uruguay’s Pedro Rocha thuggishly attempts to knock Willem off the ball. It goes very badly. Rocha bounces off Willem’s back and goes down like a broken doll. To complete Rocha’s humiliation, Willem then contemptuously backheels the ball to Krol. It may be the most beautiful moment in the history of football.

@ people who talk about the tragic lost final, it’s pretty much accepted now that Holland really weren’t as unlucky as we like to think. They did it to themselves (which, of course, like George Best, Elvis, Byron, Kurt Cobain, etc) is even more tragic and compelling. Auke Kok nailed the myths in his ironically-entitled and very good 2004 book ‘1974: We Were The Best’. He showed, for example, that Holland prepared very poorly (at Hiltrup they were living like rock stars; discipline had broken down; not only was the Bild story accurate, but things were even worse on other nights). Holland failed to take the Germans seriously and, on the day, were outplayed for long periods. It gets worse. Holland’s penalty should not have been given – the foul was fractionally outside the box. Yes, Holzenbein made the most of it with his theatrical fall, but Jansen’s tackle was reckless and Taylor, the ref, was entitled to give the German pen. Actually it should have been 3-1: Gerd Mueller was two yards onside for his second goal .. and so on.
As to mentality, and now. There’s lots to love about this team. Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder etc can be so deadly. The whole team has matured as a group. It;s a real team. Elia is a revelation. Kuyt’s passion and energy (and no little skill) are inspirational. It may not be quite the most gifted Dutch squad. 74, 90, and 98 all had slightly superior attacking talent, and better defenders. But the new guys are good enough to win. And – more importantly – they seem to have a much better attitude. It may all be bluff. We don’t yet know if they’re fighters. But I do like the calm, determined, confident approach. Previously, behind the Dutch swagger and style lurked insecurity. The Dutch doubted themselves. Bergkamp said recently that in 98, when they played Brazil, somehow Holland weren’t prepared psychologically to be in a world cup semifinal. They didn’t expect it. Somehow all such near-misses and tragi-comic failures in the past have innoculated the new generation. They play nice, but mainly they win. This time, they say, that’s all they want to do. For some mad reason I think they will.
We shouldn’t worry too much about Webb. A number our players (Heitenga, RVP, deJong, Kuyt, Robben) play or have played in the EPL in front of him and know his style. VanBommel for all his criticism has really cleaned up his act since playing for Barcelona. He was reckless then and his reputation has stuck. At Bayern this year, he has been very much in control and knows exactly how much he can get away with. That’s why he’s been so successful at staying out of the book here. He’s been saving his heavier challenges for the end of the game when he can afford a yellow (and yes he has deserved one or two this tournament but that doesn’t make him a dirty player now).
Webb does dish out yellows early and often. It will hurt Spain as much as us. Puyol has been committing edgy fouls to make up for his lack of pace. He’ll be one of the first in the book. Alonso will also end up in it most likely.
And CapdeVilla.
yes I agree fully with WInner and Auke de Jong showed why holland failed in the 2 finals and how typical this is for the Dutch as a nation as a whole.
As a boy I always had trouble buying the tales that were spun in those days by the adults around the finals in Holland. How we were robbed, how we were plotted against, how the argentine regime had manipulated the finals and a whole nation had conspired against the Dutch in 78 and 74. This has been one of the finest myth self buildings of all times. We all believed it. We were robbed again and again by foreign nations.
In 74 we were amateuristic and arrogant. The best team, the best player and yet no winners… In 78 we were insecure and also arrogant.
Years later after 78 a player said that he always used to follow up for the rebound whenever Rensenbrink hit the goal from the side. But, he said, he was so sure that Rensenbrink make the goal against argentina that he did not bother to follow him for the rebound.
Yea right… the most important game of your life and if there ever was a game where you should run for the rebound this was the one, but no, you were so sure of yourself…
and if you look at the chance, this was really a very difficult chance for Rensenbrink, far from the side, at narrow angle, … Another tale spun to keep the legend and myths alive of the betrayed holland squad of 74 78.
ANyway!
Like Winner I have good feelings abuot sunday because this generation is far from complacent and aware of the faults we made before.
Imagine we win this, and we would forever be free from this burdened past and no longer be the laughing stock of each tournement.
It is hard to beat the host nation in the finals as 74 and 78 showed, but this time we have almost the home advantage.
I am just curious to know how the conditions will be. The dutch did not play so great on altitude. How will the temperature be? The dutch do better if its not too hot. Will the pitch be smooth? We do best with a smooth, wet pitch. Who will be most affected by the thin air? The Spanish are tough but are they really? This comfortable stars are they still as tough as Spainiards used to be? Who will have the better energy at the end of the game when things get decided? The dutch team seems to be in very good condition and prepared mentally for this.
Hello everybody! just saw a new interview with JC on TV; He said it s a finall so everything can happen!

Van persie’s problem is that the system doesn’t suit his style of play. With 3 mid fielders that play through the center, the ideal striker in that system is goal hanging finisher like huntelaar.
Rvp’s instinct to be involved in build up play means he’s not in positions to finish chances created. He is not an out and out striker but a “false 9″.
he plays best with balls played into feet or running onto balls played over the shoulder, facing goal. Without true wingers heading to the byeline and cutting back, that’s one place he won’t receive passes of that nature.
My problem with him is that he should develop his hold up play with his back to goal since most of the play heads down the middle, and without the width of true wingers (robben plays as an inverted winger, so will never cut back passes with his weak foot, though robben and pass don’t normally appear in the same sentence.)
huntelaar would be more suited with this system. Rvp works better when the wingers are robben on the left and Elia or affellay on the right and he can receive crosses facing goal.
The question is, will van marwijk change the system that has worked so well for us so far? If spain play the way they’ve played everyone else, and we sit back like germany, they will score a late goal in 70-80 mins and defend it. We have to score first and pressure them.
If we start with the same defensive formation and inverted wingers, we will struggle to break spain down the middle. My only hope then is that spain score early so we have time to change tactics and recover.
The system has worked well for every other team we’ve played against, but no team is quite like Spain.

Robben has been playing for Bayern Munich on the right side and he has been devastatingly effective. The problem is the left-wing. Kuyt isn’t a true winger. Against Brazil and Uruguay, I saw that Kuyt was open for long periods. Our midfielders continually keep passing to the right side for Robben. It makes as a bit more predictable. If Afellay comes in on the right wing and Robben is moved to the left side, RVP will be scoring goals without any problem.
Kuyt is a dilemma. His work rate and ability to help out on defense makes him a starter. But the team will definitely be more dangerous with the likes of Elia, Afellay or Van der Vaart in the lineup.

Mourinho showed in the UCL final that everything is possible by your hard work and he will show again in next season how easy to destroy Barca style. This final match makes me fed excited by Barca(Spain)player has lots of possession and yes their midfielders all have tremendous skill and they knew how to cough Wesley and Robben to no space and time to play much and much than Uruguay and Brazil as they studied how to stop German attackers in Semifinal match. In other side they learn how to break the solid and compact defense formation that they show in German even it ’s no score from open play. Plan B in setplay tactic will use to break the wall if open play is not worked (Poyol ’s header). In finally ,go team go ,fight team fight ,work hard as before to show you are not the orange chicken and enjoy the match because you give it all. I believe in god and the men who never give up ,Go Orange.
Spain will win.Stars are supporting spain & not netherland.Ihave my calculatins.

Well, you fucked up.
Your national team destroyed kruyff’s legacy with probably the most violent display of inferiority and impotence ever seen in a world cup final game. Spain totally owned holland and if it wasn’t for their huge lack of aim they could have drilled the net at least 2 or 3 more times. Good props to robben, probably the only one who did not fall into this little mma game, he tried a couple of shots and runs but casillas frustrated all of his attempts. In over all whoever wrote this article is right you guys made your own luck. Against brazil for example you used the same violent tactics and they worked making “la seleçaon” lose total concentration. Against uruguay you probably had a good game more organization and more opportunities but against spain you guys deserved to be disqualiffied from all kinds of profesional competitions thats anti-football. I never saw so many yellow cards in a final game before and not to metion the ones that should have been red cards. This is not what Cruyff inherited to spain. What a shame.

The best team won!!! The Dutch should be ashamed. Holland was extremely lucky with Brazil, pretty lucky with Uruguay. But, luck evaporated with Spain. This was the ugliest World Cup Final in history. The real World Cup final was Germany X Uruguay. That was “beautiful football”. The entire world agrees with what went on — except for the Dutch coach/team.

I have also some doubts about spain playing some kind of total football. The team of 74 did not pass the ball around for 70 minutes like Spain does. They usually were looking for the fastest way to the goal, and had the will to really overpower the oppnonent.
I see much more resemblings of the current dutch side with the 74 team. They were techniqually but also a very physically strong team, as is the current dutch team. There are on the contrary many aspects of total football in the current dutch team which tend to be ignored; They are moving with the same mixture of grace and force. They move like an entity or strong collective. They have the ability to change tactics and make decisions on the field during play. They know when to be hard and when to strike like lightning. The intent is to score goals, as much as possible and always one more than the opponoent, whiich was also the adagio of the 72,73 Ajax team. With van Bommel en de JOng there is the same strong and skilled midfield as in 74. MOst of all they have the same feeling of invincibility around them.
To see the boring spanish side compared with total football of 74 is giving me the creeps.
If spain plays you can take a walk in the park, have some tea, make a sandwhich , talk with your neighbours and when you return the score is still 0 0 and xavi and iniesta still doing their short passing to eachother. Cmon Holland cmon holland!
