PSV needs to change strategy. Fast.

brands
Marcel Brands, former Feyenoord midfielder and PSV TD

PSV Eindhoven has firm financial issues to solve, if it wants to remain a solid Eredivisie club. An expansion of the stadium is out of the question and PSV will no longer pay 1 mio euros salaries to players. But, PSV does want to stay in the Dutch ( sic…) top. What will technical director Marcel Brands come up with?

For years, PSV lived beyond its means. They received a huge wake up call and realisme is now the motto of the day and technical director Marcel Brands has set a new course for the club. Buying buying has made way for developing.

“PSV was used to buying, but that needs to change,” he says. “We invest a lot in our youth development but we hardly reap the profits. We need a squad of 19 players and we want four to five youthful prospects in there.”

For years, the PSV talents felt it was impossible to make it to the first team. Always, PSV would buy an experienced player for the spot. “Players of the age group of 12 years old need to know that there is a chance for them, why would their parents transfer them over to us, otherwise? And with Labyad, Zeefuik and Wuytens, it’s happening. Now, lads like Memphis Depay and Marcel Ritzmaier develop tremendously. We need to give them a good look on the first team.”

PSV wants to be in the good books again, in financial terms and as the new stadium isn’t coming anytime soon, it’s Brands task to make sure the balance sheet of PSV will look healthy.

zeefuik
Zeefuik, one of PSV’s striker talents…

Brands doesn’t want to criticise his successors. “It’s about ambition. PSV wanted to remain at CL level and needed to invest in top quality to achieve this. The bigger the club, the bigger the ambitions, the bigger the bills.”

Brands managed this process at RKC and at AZ and he did it well. “At RKC we shopped in the pond of players of a couple of 100Ks. It’s easier. Because we could sell players for 1Mio to Groningen, or AZ or Anderlecht, for instance. At Man United or Barca they can only buy top players for mega-bucks and who will buy them off them for even more?”

PSV’s strategy is clear. “Erik Pieters might make a big jump to some foreign club and then we have Tamata waiting. When you want to play CL football, you’d hang on to the experienced player. We will change tack. We will only play 1 Mio+ for an exceptional player. Which automatically means you won’t have 10 players in your team like that.”

“But, the implications are clear too. We won’t be getting experienced international players anymore. But, the salaries are on their way down and most international players do see the Dutch competition as a good step up. Think Scandinavian countries or the former Balkan nations. We need to be creative and win titles in Holland. Then we can slowly move up with a balanced policy and good monetary practices.”

“So, if Dszudszak goes, we won’t be able to buy a player with his qualities to actually replace him literally but we can buy a number of players for a number of positions.”

I may went a little ahead of myself calling this U17 generation the best since Sneijder,Robben.. But that is what I hope, because they would come just in time to replace them in 4-5 years, maybe 6.

A fun PSV bit of news, kinda. Ex AZ and ex PSV striker Danny Koevermans is being linked (I know its just a rumor, sonneveld :) )with Aron Winter’s TFC. I’m sure a few of you have been following the painful attempt by Aron to get Toronto FC to play something resembling football, one of the main problems is scoring goals. Is Danny the solution, short term?

(They are also being linked with canadian born Owen Hargreaves. Maybe Toronto has great doctors?)

I’d love to see someone like Koevermans in TFC, they need someone who can score. Ever since they got rid of The Ego (Dwayne DeRo) they can’t score at all.

Aron Winter has complete control to develop something special here in Toronto, he should be able to do it so long as he doesn’t get frustrated and bolt back to Europe. Mo Johnston was a complete idiot and left a mess here, the squad was probably in worse shape than an explansion squad.

After watching every minute this is how i would rate them in terms of talent…

1) Memphis DEPAY
2) Anass ACHAHBAR
3) Danzell GRAVENBERCH
4) Kyle EBECILIO
5) Jordi BITTER
6) Karim REKIK

:D

the others are quite mediocre…

but 2 who stood out in being especially shit were

1) Yassine AYOUB
2) Menno KOCH

:(

Interesting choice Srinjoy, but I don’t think Ayoub is that bad, actiouly I expectet he will become a good Utrecht player in the near future.

Anyway, this is my pool after watched 2 of the 3 games:

1. Achahbar
2. Kongolo/Rekik
3. Ebecilio

@Oranjerules Good to see a fellow TFC fan here. Four years of the revolving door has left the club in terrible shape. I agree, if Winter is patient enough, I think we will see something good come out of this. I hope the club will see it thru long term as well. But with the players he has, it is very difficult. My dad always said, “you can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear”. But, long term, we will see a difference.

Keko – Kongolo and Rekik may have potential but they are prone to blunders not just small errors that ultimately costed the team a place in the next tound…plus how can u skip the best player in the team memphis dephay..that guys has everything, passing, pace, dribbling, freekicks, tricks!!

Srinjoy, the best player is Achahbar by far, Memphis Depay has lots of talent but his first touch-ball control is one of the main things he needs to improve. Have you noticed the number of losing balls because of this?

When I watched the U17 Euros I thought Trindade de vilhena, dephay and achahbar looked like the best prospects but I haven’t been able to watch one of these Mexico games.
Seems like the defense hasn’t been as strong as in the Euros.
These guys are still quite young though, too young to say anyone is prone to errors etc.

Hey, im still alive guys, just informing. I’m finishing up some stuff that needs sorting, and trying to overcome the fierce sense of dissapointment that even at youth level, we just CANT seem to win a World Cup.. WHY!?! Why did Switzerland win a freaking youth world cup!?!?! and we never have.. WTF. I dont get it.

PSV is going to blow arse next year. hopefully a few years from now they will have some homegrown talent and back in the thick of things.

The only team that will be worse than PSV next year will be the bitches of the MLS aka Aron Winters, TFC. hahahahahahaha

Watched U17 Nederlands vs Mexico -

My opinion:

1) Defensive work by Mexico made it difficult to score (…period!)

2) The Mexican goalie was really quite vulnerable…(What an opportunity !!)

3) For no good reason that I could see, the U17 kids just couldn’t shoot straight…point No 2 above – the opportunity was missed :-(

4) Netherlands U17 defended like they assume that they will always be able to score “one more goal” than any opponent they ever face. (With effective defensive systems these days – this is suicide in a tournament!!)

5) The group has tremendous skill, lots of talent and quite a number of them will be top class players in a few years. But for now, if they want to win WC silverware…they need to work on defending as if they were a 2nd division team with an injured GK. If they do this, then they will have success.

PS: Also watched Canada vs England and Canada vs Rawanda – the Canadians are a decent group with quite a bit more skill than I really expected (and I was impressed). With a little more finish up front they could have been the first Canadian U17 group (ever!) to make it into the round of 16. Shame that both they and the young Oranje didn’t go further I was beginning to really get into this tournament.

Hmmm, you must be referring to Jason?
I don’t think I have made fun of TFC yet…

Jason and I are from Vancouver – so we do dislike anything Toronto!
Right now all of their teams suck so bad, Hahaha it’s kind of funny, but I’m glad (I guess I shouldn’t speak for Jason).
I visited Toronto 2 times – the first time they had a garbage strike in the middle if the summer and it reaked. The second time my tire blew and I was stranded there over thanksgiving week as no mechanic would help me. So it didn’t make it hard to hate… I will admit I am slightly jealous on Aron Winter coaching there, but he is not having a good start so it’s not so bad for now (yea yea, it’s a process I know).
Getting de Rosario outta there helped to – that guy seems a prick, can’t stand his celebration. Haha. I almost feel sorry for TFC. Must be tough to be a fan.

sorry Steve for getting you Canucks all mixed up, i meant Jason. You’re from Vancouver eh? so that explains everything. on the flip side, i hear toronto folks were cheering for Boston in the nhl finals only cause they hate vancouver.

Haha, that’s funny. actually Boston’s players probably had more actual connection to Vancouver/BC than Vancouvers players… but I’m not even a Canucks fan.
(btw, shouldn’t say I “hate” Toronto, just dislike)
Where are you from?
Cheers
