Oranje U17 enters history books

Albert Stuivenberg
Former Feyenoord youth coach Albert Stuivenberg

This article has been long in the making. Apologies. But Albert Stuivenberg’s Under 17 Oranje has really made an impression in the world by serving up a huge defeat to the Germans in Serbian based European Championship ( 5-2).

I wanted some more meat to write about and while I was working on it other news items constantly pushed this piece under the pile. But here we go.

Stuivenberg’s team (hopefully more on him later too as I don’t know who he is at all!) was carried by Arsenal’s Kyle Ebecilio, central defender Terry Kongolo (Feyenoord) and the wonderfully named Tonny Trindade de Vilhena ( also Feyenoord).

It’s the third time that our Under 17s reached the finals. In 2009, Germany was too strong. That Holland had Luc Castaignos and Stefan de Vrij in it’s line up. The first one demonstrated his scoring abilities in the Eredivisie last season and is off to Inter Milan while Stefan de Vrij is one of Feyenoord’s mainstays.

Earlier on, the Under17s qualified for the World Cup in Mexico (from 18 June until 10 July).

Feyenoord player Nathan Ake ( off to Chelsea next season) was speechless after the tournament. Ake: “……………….”.

In the coming weeks, therefore, this team will go for gold. Stuivenberg already had a strong squad but with the Sparta player Adnan Bajic back in the fold after a serious leg break, the Dutch odds are even better. The talented left footer was speechless. Bajic: “…………..”

Just kiddin’ of course.

Bajic: “I worked very hard to be back in time and I made it.”

Bajic broke his shin bone in January. This is one of the biggest talents Holland has and he had big plans. The happy-go-lucky Sparta midfielder felt his season had arrived. He expected to maybe break into the Jupiler league with Sparta this season.

When his mates won the European Title against the Germans, he was watching the game via telly. “The EC was too early, sadly enough. My parents are from Bosnia, so I would have liked to have played there. But it was simply impossible. I was happy for the lads but I also knew the coach wouldn’t be changing a winning team, of course.”

The Rotterdam based club gave the youngster the opportunity to get fit in a number of tournaments. “I was voted player of the tournament on two of those,” he laughs. “And when Stuiverberg called to asked me about my form I was really pleased. I’m part of the group again.”

Bajic is back quickly after a “neat break”, which happened after an innocent clash with Feyenoord talent Rekik. Coming Saturday, the team arrives in Mexico. “We will need to adjust to the height and heat. We also don’t know our opponents at all. No one has seen North Korea play. Congo is physically strong and Mexico has a lot of talent. I think we can meet with the best but winning a world title is a big thing. We will need to be at our best.”

In 2005, Ruud Kaiser was the coach to bring bronze back to Holland from Peru. Most players from that squad actually made it to the big stage. Tim Krul, Erik Pieters, Vurnon Anita and Dirk Marcellis even made it to the big Oranje. Other well know names are Ruud Vormer, Diego Biseswar and Geert-Arend Roorda.

Vurnon Anita is the most capped international in this age group ( 28 games).

Luc Castaignos is the all time top scorer, with 13 goals in 19 games.

I also share Eduardo’s opinion towards the Dutch clubs buying foreign players :( they should develop their youth players (Dutch) and try to keep them for longer that will also help them to sell with a better price.

Dutch talents seems to be more appreciated by Portuguese than Dutch clubs do.
One of the things I most admire of Argentine people is that for they their players are the first, the second and the third priority in their league and only if it’s absolutely necessary they sign a foreign talent. They prefer give chances to their own youth players, and all clubs there have the common purpose to develop their footbal nation.
The Dutch case constitutes the antipodal of this. Ajax is trying to sign the complete Dannish youth teams. Psv is probably scouting in Canada,Pakistan, Burundi or Madagascar right now and several other Dutch clubs are doing the same. At the same time we are seeing how Dutch talents are going to England, Spain (Sarpong, Zeegelaar, De Guzman, etc) or, in this case Portugal. I bet you that by the end of this transfer period the three more competitives teams (Ajax, Twente and Psv) will’ve signed at least an 80% of foreign players!!
One of the major reason I’m a Feyenoord fan is because they still trust in what they have at home.

Great article. I disagree with Stuibenverg style. He always want to win, that’s fine, but he tend to betray the traditional oranje play of good football and 4-3-3. I don’t know how he was capable to put a CB like Natan Ake as a left winger in every game I saw from the tournament. Also I doubt about his selection abilities, there is a few great talents in Holland that never received even a call, like Oussama Tannane maybe the greatest talent of the Netherlands or Brahim Darri who is cleraly better than the current right winger Jordi Bitter. Looking this video you can clearly see the amount of talent he has: http://youtu.be/VhJhy-dJZOQ

Btw, Agrami talked about Rob de Wit… well, maybe his son will do that the father couldn’t. His name is Mees de Wit, is playing for Ajax under 13 as a left winger too, and according to the experts he has an amazing talent. Let’s wait and see.

Thanks for that one Jan, goal tv played the semi and final matches from that U17 tournament and it was great to watch.  Still I am disappointed we were denied into the U21s..

@Srinjoy, what happened to Denmark?
After all of your hype I watched their match today versus Iceland where they were beaten and eliminated, and it’s at home even!  ;)

Anyways, young Dutch players..
Since I am not able to watch much Eredivisie, and I think I’ve got a pretty good grasp on some of your rating styles, can anyone who is able and ever has a bit if spare time please rate or comment on any of these younger players for me:
van Aanholt
Vlaar
de Vrij
Janmaat
Kongolo
Rekik
Toornstra
Brama
Wijnaldum
Fer
Ebecilio
van Wolfswinkel
Bas Dost
Biseswar
Castaignos
Ozyakup
Narsingh

and who should be on such a list?
Who else is coming?
I wonder which ones might step up in the next tournaments after the Euro 2012s..

Thanks!

Heh… I told you a while ago Srinjoy that you are overrating the Danes. They have a good generation, good talents, but not nearly the strongest in Europe.

Holland U/17 loses first game 0-1 to Congo – deserved loss, they couldnt string passes together and Congo looked better. 15 min to go our keeper kept pumping long balls up which kept coming back. Poor Show !

After all the hype about Denmark u/21 they finished LAST in their group ! Let’s hope the same fate doesn’t become our U/17 after all the hype here.

Nicki Bille singe handedly managed to destroy debnmark missing 9 chances himself, denmark played well but their defense n finishing let them down, mikael andersen was sensational and pulled of what is the best save i have ever seen on live tv, but what is really pissing me of is why denmark didn’t make it to the next fucking round…on what basis does belarus go through and iceland finish above theM>???urgh..

Switzerland 9 Pts + 6 GD +6 GF 0 GA
Belarus 3 Pts -2 GD +3 GF -5 GA
Iceland 3 Pts -2 GD +3 GF -5 GA
Denmark 3 Pts -2 GD +3 GF -5 GA

Bel 2-0 Ice
Swi 1-0 Den
Swi 2-0 Ice
Den 2-1 Bel
Swi 3-0 Bel
Ice 3-1 Den

So why the fucck do denmark come last?>>?

and then i stay up to watch our netherlands under 17 but they play mediocre and lose to the physically fitter and faster congo…just because the adapted to the height and heat of mexico…how shit…memphis dephay was impressive, anaas anachbar has some nice flicks and hold up ability but on the most part he has 0 strength and not much pace or height so we looked toothless in attack, nathan ake lukd good when he came on and shud have started with kyle ebecillio who was good in spells but didn’t command like in the euros…the right winger was shit!!
