Oranje starts 2011…

ruud

Wesley Sneijder, Theo Janssen and Dirk Kuyt skipped the first training with Oranje in the run up to the Austria friendly. The three did some simple practices in the sports hall of the Oranje hotel but will be able to start coming Wednesday.

Sneijder and Kuyt both played with their teams while Janssen played a full game for Twente vs Utrecht. The midfielder never trains after a match day.

Three players thanked for the friendly. Rafael van der Vaart (calf), Robin van Persie ( flu) and Nigel de Jong ( ankle) stayed in England. Luuk de Jong is the new call up.

Ruud van Nistelrooy said at the press conference that he’s looking forward to leaving HSV Hamburg to have one more big adventure. “The clock is ticking. I have only 14 games to go in Hamburg and I will give it my all, but I won’t stay.”

Asked if he’s angry that his current club blocked a transfer to his beloved Real Madrid… “Not angry…. I signed a deal here and I was totally awake when I did so. I can’t complain. I’m a professional. They pay me well, I play. I would have loved to have gone back to Spain and I tried all I could, but I respect my signature…. But I do need a new adventure and I have one more big one left in me, I know.”

ibi

Van Nistelrooy is delighted to be back with Oranje. “The coach called me up even with Van Persie and Huntelaar in the squad. I believe I can be of value for Oranje and I would love to play one more EC, but…the coach has always been straight to me. If there’s a youngster with similar skills and contributions as me, he’ll pick the youngster. Fair enough.”

Ibi Afellay came to the trainingscamp with a big smile. The reporter asked “How’s life in Barcelona?” and the smile became even bigger. “Barcelona is super. Totally fantastic!”.

Afellay: “I want to become a better player every day and training and playing with my mates in Barcelona surely helps.” He only played 23 minutes in La Liga ( two full games in the Copa del Rey). “Is that not enough? I don’t agree. I’m the new kid. It’s good for me to start slowly. The level is so much higher. It’s tremendous to play with these lads, honestly. Barcelona is a super club, in all aspects and at all levels.”

Sneijder doesn’t believe he can play for the full 90 minutes against Austria. “That’s not smart after an injury like mine. But I haven’t spoken twith the coach, so I shouldn’t comment really.”

Sneijder copped a muscle injury during the World Cup for Club teams last year. “I missed 50 days as a result. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really great to be back with Oranje, and I want to play but a full game will be a lot for me.”

strootman2
Kevin Strootman after his debut on Wednesday against Austria. He scored in his own goal, by accident tripped Sneijder who broke his leg and he got red-carded while calling Van Marwijk a coach who puts his head up Frank de Boer’s arse…. And then he woke up!

Sneijder was back with Inter and made his mark, scoring a zinger in the second minute and being involved with all other goals in their 5-3 victory. His coach Leonardo declared Sneijder Man of the Match. “That’s cool. It’s great to be back and the race for the title in Italy is wide open again. Let’s make this another great year.”

Kevin Strootman makes his debut amongst the world stars but it would be possible that the lad who only played four games for Utrecht at top level makes his actual debut on the pitch. “I’m on a fast track but I’m not complaining.”

Strootman saw the two main competitors for the spot next to Van Bommel in midfield thank for the role. Van der Vaart and De Jong are still in England, minding their knocks. Theo Janssen is another candidate for the holding midfielder role while Jon De Guzman might be called up too. Maduro has experience in the role as well, of course.

“Ah yes, if you look at it like that, who knows…. For now, I’m still introducing myself. Most of the guys I only know from tv.”

Van Marwijk surprised everyone with the quick selection of the former Sparta prospect. “I know how good he is. He’s important for Young Oranje and when I saw him take on the Ajax players I felt I needed to see Strootman up close and personal for some days. He’s got a lot of potential.”

Strootman: “I’m totally focused at adapting to this level and I want to turn these days into three wonderful days.”

And who is this then:

How much playing time did Strootman get?

I think they both got around 20 minutes

Strootman was pretty invisible but that is his role.

Luuk looked like a pretty smart player, he made some good decisions.

I dont see world class for either of them but I think Strootman could be like a van Bommel (or a better Janssen)

Luuk doesn’t seem to be a world class poacher, but I think he is a good dribbler, scores some goals and makes good decisions.

Love for someone to tell their thoughts because this is based on today and a couple other games.

I’m hoping to see the match – if someone can put it up.
:-)
:-)
But you are right sonneveld, there isn’t much to go on yet – but the potential is there we’ll have to see how it goes as they mature further.

(I would like to see Strootman alongside VdV for at least part of a match – that would be an interesting pair both as attackers and defenders.)

Very difficult to judge 2 20-year old players who came in for 20 min when the game was already won but I disagree with what was said. Strootman looked really good and lively. Great vision as he dished out some really good passes and excellent technique to keep the ball. Which player except for Wes exploded on his first cap? As for De Jong, I think he is a Kuijt but with more technique so this should be really good for us. He fights all the time, tracks back (already) and is dangerous when in possession of the ball. So all in all, both impressed me.

Hi,

Love this blog, just wanted to say I was watching the game last night and Sneijder’s goal was fantastic – this is how Soccernet described his goal in the match review:

“Netherlands were having more of the play and Kuyt put his header wide from the six-yard box before Sneijder converted a simple goal in the 29th minute.

Theo Janssen’s pass from the left wing found the Inter Milan midfielder in the six-yard box and he slotted home into the centre of the goal.”

Do these guys watch the game?!?

Unbelievable , I have just seen the goal. My first report was the one of Soccernet and I imagined what the fuss was about on Sneijders goal. Soccernet did him injustice!! Soo biased. If that was Ronaldo the whole world would start saying he is better than Messi

“Do these guys watch the game?!?”

It wouldn’t surprise me if they just looked at the stats with one of those small graphic boxes where you can see where the shot is coming from.

That’s what his description sounds like.

P.S. Kuyt had a good game, would have been “very good” if he had gone for the assist after his most noteable solo-dribble.

Both Elia & Afaleey are not young any more..this is the right time for them.at the age of 23 ronaldino won a WC and moved to barca…
I ma glad that we got some footballing holding mids in Strootman,& Deguzman..This will erase our bad name from football history.(I mean Dejong-Bommel did in WC).
B/w in 2006 -Portugal-Neds game.roben also got heavy karate kungfu kick but that is ignored now…Portugal are famous in india..

oh, and I’ve never felt so secure at LB. For me, I don’t even care about Pieters’ assist, the guy just doesn’t let anyone get past him. I’m even starting to see our opponents giving up on that side completely and just trying to get through somewhere else.

I wish Arsene Wenger would pay attention (or some other scout at Arsenal). I really think that guy is topclub material, and not for inspecting the bench like Affelay, or backup/reinf. like Emanuelsson. He can definitely compete with the likes of Clichy (Arsenal) or Abidal (Barca). Or a Bayern with Lahm and Pieters on both sides, will almost be invulnerable to teams that depend on their wingers. He is exactly the right guy to stop Messi if we ever face Argentina (allthough it will depend on whether the ref is biased towards Messi, cause it will be physical and Messi will go down or run into a wall quite often).

Agree that pieters looked improved alot, and even more reliable than weil offensively and defensively, i feel that now LB is secured with pieters and emmanuelson as backup, but RB is now open if someone just slightly better than weil, i’ll take him over weil, since wc he play regular in ajax however doestnt look get better, he looks stop developing and has reached his peak, what do think?

Some news that I find quite cool (already saw this yesterday after the match, but it has nothing to do with it, so I waited, but can’t wait no more, it’s burning on my fingertips :) ):

Raphael van der Vaart is now ranked #4 on Castrol rankings website.

Now I can’t say I expected him to get THIS level of recognition, whoh. He’s the highest ranked EPL player now.

I think Ronnie Stam could make a good backup for RB. He’s currently being used by Wigan as scapegoat, but his games are good. He gets taken off without proper justification, at least that’s what I saw happen 2 or 3 times now, and checking other stats and results of his club when he was taken off made me conclude this, his club plays worse without him, yet the coach keeps taking him off when things go bad for him. On top of that he’s being used out of position sometimes on the left I think, another sign he’s being used as scapegoat (same with Elia at HSV for a while after he had an argument with their medical staff, he seems to have earned back his LW spot again though, just not the playing time he deserves yet/starting spot i mean, as opposed to coming in when HSV is stuttering or even losing).

With scapegoat I mean someone who the coach thinks of first to replace in their preferred team (could be starting line-up, could also be during the game) if there are no special circumstances (like yellow cards, someone playing horrible or with an injury, that sort of stuff).

P.S. Stam recently (5 Jan.) scored his first goal for Wigan (#18 in EPL) against Bolton (#8 in EPL) to win Wigan another point (1-1 draw).

You can find it here (2nd goal):

lol @ espn.soccernet with their report.

According to them Affelay scored and Nigel de Jong played, hahaha.

No wonder they got Sneijder’s goal completely wrong as well (”Theo Janssen’s pass from the left wing found the Inter Milan midfielder in the six-yard box” ???).

Definitely not watched the game, and probably only a quick glance at the graph, hell, perhaps it’s even a bot doing these reports! You know, those AI bots you can chat with. :D

soccernet = objective, accurate reporting.

For the game, all I had to go on was live updates from espns mobile app. I was suprised to see de Jong(Nigel) in the starting line-up. But their “play by play” for the first goal is pitiful. I agree with Dean, if that goal was done by Messi or Ronaldo, or even Rooney, they would have been choking trying to find enough superlatives to describe it.
