Oranje analysis: The Attack!

van-persie-holland-2

“They don’t go blind in attack anymore, they can also play for a result.” This is a quote of the symbol of the “New Germany” Thomas Muller. That might be true, but Oranje’s attack is still the best defence.

We looked at the goalies, defenders and midfielders… Now, two weeks after the punishing we received in Hamburg, we’ll look at the most important line in our squad. The Attack. Where football nations like Italy and England only selected four forwards in the past year, Oranje will select at least seven ( if it was up to me).

And four of them will be classic wingers: Arjen Robben, Luciano Narsingh, Derk Boerrigter and Eljero Elia. Two players who still have to make their debut, that’s right. Johnny Come Lately Boerrigter ( developed at Ajax but needed to make a detour of some sorts) already got the nod by Van Marwijk but couldn’t engage as a result of a back injury. Narsingh, the Heerenveen winger, is the fixed started in Young Oranje and so impressive this season that he will most certainly make a big move after this season. His Heerenveen buddy Oussama Assaidi wouldn’t be too sloppy for Oranje either, but he decided to play for Morocco. And as we’ve seen in the past, Van Marwijk utilised Afellay, Van der Vaart and Van Persie as left and/or right wingers.

Luciano Narsingh

This also applies to Dirk Kuyt – originally a center striker. Every coach doubts the Katwijk player. It’s not always elegant and his skills sometimes leave much to be desired but the national hug-curly head is the living proof that willpower can bring you far.

It might be a cliche, but Dirk always delivers the goods. He will never let you down in terms of his tactical charter. Kuyt is always a 6, at least. Whereas Elia will hover between a 4 and an 8. Kuyt is the man who can give Oranje balance.

For me ( and the AD newspaper): Elia, Babel and Lens will not make the trip to Poland/Ukraine. Not picking Elia is a tough one as we all know he has the skills to break a game open as a supersub.

Elia has not played many games in the last season and a half. Benched at HSV and still not utilised by Juventus. Coach Antonio Conte says that “Juventus isn’t ready for Elia” and his time will come but the former Ajax talent only player one competition game. And didn’t make it past the half time whistle.

Babel is doing well in Hoffenheim and illustrated that against Switzerland and Germany. But his enthusiasm is not enough for him to regain a spot in the squad. He lacks the passing and technical skills in the small space to add to Oranje’s game and seems to be perfect for a counter attacking tactics ( not unlike Lens).

Ruud van Goal / Gol / Tor

For the striker position, we have Van Persie and Huntelaar. Since Van Persie can play on three other spots ( playmaker and both wings), Van Marwijk will want to pick a third center striker. Ruud van Nistelrooy might be the right candidate if he’s fit. He has the right attitude and personality in the dressing room and will most certainly instill fear in his opponent when he comes on. Nacer Barazite is simply not ready yet. He’s doing great at Austria Wien and will most likely yield a transfer to a German Bundesliga club, or an EPL club again. He will have some time to present himself, maybe for 2014.

The two up and coming strikers are Luuk de Jong ( 22) and Ricky van Wolswinkel ( 22). De Jong is more of a target man, while Van Wolfswinkel is more like a Makaay type poacher. Luuk de Jong can play midfield again and is a strong header. This might tip the balance in his favour. Personally, I’d wait till the last moment and decide between Luuk de Jong or Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The definitive Squad:

Keepers: Maarten Stekelenburg (AS Roma), Michel Vorm (Swansea City) and Tim Krul (Newcastle United).

Defence: Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax), John Heitinga (Everton), Joris Mathijsen (Málaga), Douglas Teixeira (FC Twente), Khalid Boulahrouz (Stuttgart), Erik Pieters (PSV) and Edson Braafheid (Hoffenheim).

Midfield: Mark van Bommel (AC Milan), Nigel de Jong (Manchester City), Rafael van der Vaart (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Strootman (PSV), Wesley Sneijder (Internazionale) and Ibrahim Afellay (FC Barcelona).

Attack: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04), Luuk de Jong (FC Twente)/ Ruud van Nistelrooy (Malaga), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Arjen Robben (Bayern München), Derk Boerrigter (Ajax) and Luciano Narsingh (SC Heerenveen).

@Sam you are talking with sense ,but cannot agree much on Dejong ..he is the best protector we have and he plays for a starstudded team…and he is still playing good.i do agree that dejong is slow…but we need him.Orange will beat germany and spain even in 90 minutes..only the the thing is we need to drop some players.

Going back to what matters. If you look at Barcelona, Puyol and Pique are (really) out of the spotlight. Its because everything else happens on the other end of the field, with messi and co. I think if Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder or even Huntelaar can steal all the headlines then nobody will even bother to look at our “so called” weak defense. Puyol and Pique have their jobs cut of because(generally)barcelona is up by 2-0 at HT. It is much more easier for defenders to maintain a 2-0 lead, as pressure tends to decrease and confidence rise. Compare this to a 0-0 situation, where they become tense and sometimes lose concentration. But again, Oranje is not playing in la liga nor do barcelona have to play Germany and Portugal. But I think it is a good reference for note taking…

Watched Chelsea vs Newcastle
Tim Krul saved a penalty and had other good saves but he couldn’t keep out 3 other strikes.
He has very good reflexes but he needs to work on his positioning. If you guys watched the game or watch the highlights, the last two goals could have been saved by Krul.
Anyways, I’m happy with his progress. More games means more experience. He needs some friendly games to see how good he fits with the defense.

I read somewhere that Van der Wiel is planning to go to Valencia instead of the Premier League. I think he’s at the right age and maturity level in his game to move on. I’m always apprehensive about young players leaving too early and stunting their development.

I have a question for you guys:

Is it better for the development of our young players to go to England or Spain? Or it doesn’t matter?

I personally think it doesn’t matter. However, the style of La Liga play is more like the international games compared to PL games that are more fast paced and more physical.

Any observations or comments?

Big difference for Krul was both his CBs going injured today. He looked pissed off having conceded, I love that in a keeper.

Also interesting..
Messi can today equal Dutchman Phillip Cocu (1998-2004) as non-Spanish player with most official Barcelona games (292)…

>But Dejong VS Busquets??????????

I prefer DeJong any time. Great player, great soul too. BvM plz put him back.

>Bommel Vs Xavi???????????

Mark is getting older but he is still a leader and he can play CB. We need leaders behind.

As per Kuyt, he is not the best player in the world but he can make a contribution any time. See friendly with Uruguay last summer. He can be very valuable.

>But you cannot underestimate puyol..he is the main reason barcelona and spain defence…look at his foul on roben in both situations in final.

if the referee was not incompetent he should have seen a red for the one before the end of regular time.

@Sam: I rather have Kuyt and DeJong as sub. I like Huntelaar we need him. In a game where Van Persie is neutralized by the opponent, you need a poacher, like RVN and Hunter is my choice. I would let Van Bommel and Mathijsen retire from national team but I think Bert will take Bommel, Mathijsen to Euro as their last tour. Bert already line up DeJong and Strootman as the future defensive mid, but he has not showed that he is willing to call up new central defenceman like Douglas to replace Mathijsen. Only Bert will know. I was hoping that he reads this blog. Is there anyone else there somehow to get Bert and his coaching staff to read this blog?

I was wondering who can be a good sub for our Rt back position ?
is there any talent rising up soon ?
i mean , mercellis , janmaat ain’t Oranje material in my opinion , are they ?

NO v.Bommel, Babel, Braafheid, or (as much as I love em) v.Nistelrooy.

Raise your hand if you are an in-law of v.Bommel. Nobody? Sure does seem like it though. He’s too slow now and fouls entirely way too much so he needs to sit out.

Stkelenburg
VdW – Heitinga – Douglas – Pieters
Leroy Fer – Strootman
Sneijder
Robben – Huntelaar – Wijnaldum

Subs:
Krul, Vorm
Bruma, Mathijsen, van Aanholt
Van Der Vaart, Afellay, Schaars, De Jong
v.Persie, Luuk De Jong, Kuyt

@SamDC

Regarding your PL/LaLiga question for Dutch player, I think it depends on the player. I think midfielders/forwards should stay in Holland as long as possible (until they are 23/24), then go to either of those 2 leagues. I prefer England because I feel that our players get more appreciation there than in Spain (see Drenthe, Robben, Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Maduro, Heitinga). Although they all had successful spells, in the end they all left unhappy (Maduro will leave unhappy in January).

I can’t wait for Sneijder to go to the Premier League (I know he will) and take it by storm.

I would like to see vdWiel go to Spurs.

On a side note: I think all Dutch players should boycott Serie A. No more youths going there. It’s a dying league and it’s taking our young players there with it.

Jan,

Please intervene when extreme, poisonous and racist rants like the one above appear on this blog. The rant I read above from “oranjeboom” absolutely disgusted me. No contributor to this blog should be subjected to such digusting attacks. A rant like that is poison to this excellent blog. Many blogs ban members for a length of time. Maybe you should consider that. I would hate to see this blog go downhill. If someone disagrees with Tiju or anyone else or wants to correct their spelling or whatever that’s fine. We can all learn from each other but do so respectfully.

Sincerely,
Gerry

The blog seems to be wandering a bit, becoming involved in issues not related to Netherlands football. Jan will remember that “we” have been in a similar situation before this one. I believe the best advice is to simply ignore the nonsense, rather than rising to the bait. After a while, the bothersome blogger(s)will tire and hopefully rejoin the football discussion. Remember, all of this discussion is about a sport, an entertainment and not critical to the world or to our lives. It should be enjoyable, and each of us can help make it so.
