Kuyt soothes Bert’s anger in crazy game

afellay kuyt
Kuyt believes in it…and slowly Afellay takes off….flapping his wings and he is airborne…

When Hungary scored the 3-3 in Amsterdam, Bert van Marwijk could be seen kicking and screaming at the sideline in total anger with this team’s shabby performance.

Two late Dirk Kuyt goals ( one after a brilliant Afellay move and the second maybe a lucky?) made sure the 3 points stayed in Holland.

The fans and neutral viewers saw an exciting game, with eight goals and lots of mistakes. And mistakes make football fun. Van Marwijk won’t see it like that though and will be pretty concerned.\\

The number two in the world did end this season as the leader of Group E and will defend a four point lead against the only rival left: Sweden.

The closing game was a parody on the gallery game Oranje played in Hungary. Whatever Holland did, they couldn’t bring back the memory of the Barca like game they played to play Hungary silly.

Oranje played sloppy and too slow. “Our discipline was gone. The only positive thing is that we kept on playing football and came back from a desperate position.”

The home team did get three massive opportunities, with Robin van Persie in a main role. The striker scored the 1-0 after 13 minutes of play.

Van Persie allowed Kuyt to go through five minutes later but the Liverpudlian couldn’t score. In the 24th minute Van Persie missed the target narrowly. Hungary stats were only relevant for the fouls, although they saw a good goal disallowed ( ref felt Dzsudzsak took the free kick to quick).

Ruud van Nistelrooy came on for the slightly injured van Persie and lacklustre defending allowed the visitors to get to 1-2. “Erik Pieters wasn’t 100% fit before the game. He was a risk. I decided to take the risk,” said Van Marwijk.

Oranje’s Man of the Match scored the equaliser. Wesley Sneijder had a nice 1-2 combination with Vadocz and scored a precision ball in the far corner. When Ruud van Gol scored his goal on a Kuyt assist it seemed Oranje secured the three points. But three minutes later, Emanuelson blundered to allow Hungary their third goal.

Kuyt scored two late goals (”the second one was a cross for Ruud but I failed it…”) and kept the points in Amsterdam. “That’s something at least,” sighed Van Marwijk.

Guys the point is: This time even if our opponent scored 3 goals, it just wasn’t enough, ’cause we scored 5!! And that’s something really enjoying! You can score 3, but with Oranje it’s not enough to gain even a point!

About players: Affelay is growing the way, that he can soon be as essential as Robben is. With Elija on the bench and Van der Vaart becoming master mind of midfield Ornaje are heading towards great future!

Oranje is de kleur van gekte!!

I do hope Elia and Afellay can grow to replace the big guns shortly.. maybe Lens(who is getting back to some of his old level) and in longer run, hope for a few from Fer, Strootman, Toornstra, V.Wolfswinkel, Ebecilio, Narsingh, Wijnaldum, A.Asante, Özyakup, Castaignos, Kishna, Cabral, O.John, Pröpper, Castillion, Jozefzoon, L.De Jong, S.De Jong, Dost and list goes on for longer in my head XD but this will do lol

When the dusts are settled, I hope people realize that the second half of the game was nothing more than a fluke. The defending was awful, there is no denial to that fact. But, I can’t see any reason to get panic. Some of the knee-jerk reactions in this board is just completely ridiculous, some started throwing random names for replacements, some called a complete defense overhauling (sorry, this one is just plain stupidity!).

Let’s not kid ourselves. When you’re losing the number one keeper, there is a significant degree of leadership and organization lost in the overall defense- not to mention the confidence level- no matter how good the replacement goalie is. It’s just the way the defensive team operates, they depend heavily on trust and understanding among each other. The first goal was a perfect example. When the ball was swung from the corner flag, the defense wasn’t set properly. At the edge of the penalty box, notice how De Jong was hesitant. Maybe he should have closed down quicker, but he couldn’t be sure that somebody else backed him off. Again, classic example of players not understanding their roles at that particular time. And of course the two deflections just made it worse for Vorm to react, so there was some lucks involved in that goal, too.

I don’t want to sound that I blame Vorm for the weak defense (because I am not), but realize that he may not have (yet) the respect that Stek or Sar had.

Oh btw, this is a trivial question for you.. when was the last time the Dutch gave up more more than 2 goals? It was against Austria almost exactly 3 years ago. The GK? You’d guess it right if you think it was a second string goalie (Timmer).

Another factor involved was just a lazy defending. The second and third goal were the results of this. The disciplined was very poor, maybe the team became complacent or maybe they were in the state of shock following the quick reply goal after the start of the 2nd half. I am sure Van Marwijk will take harsh actions on this like he has done in the past. On the second goal, three players (De Jong, Kuyt and Vd Wiel) trapped one Hungarian, and none of those could come up with a ball or sweep it for a throw. It’s just accident waiting to happen. The third goal was again a simple individual error not paying attention when play offside trap.

The message is.. nothing wrong tactically how the game was approached. Just need to focus more in the next match, and hopefully we’ll get the our leader back in the defense (Stekelenburg)

Final note.. To those of you who have singled out Pieters, where were you when Van der Wiel had a series of WTF moments prior to the World Cup (e.g. friendly vs. the US)? How come you didn’t ask for his head then? Oh wait .. maybe because he’s an Ajacied. From a neutral ground (which I am standing on), there is nothing wrong with Pieters. He did just fine in the first half, some dodgy moments in the second half (slowed down by injuries) before he was substituted.

@Eric very good point…charisma is needed for a GK.Vorm is good keeper and not a bad choice, but i rate velthuizen above him when he was at eredivise,i dont konw about him now.i still believe stke would have stopped 2 nd and 3 rd goal with better positioning.
Peiters is also not a bad choice our LB has to be from Bouma/Peiters/Aanholt.

bad defending is just bad defending ; nothing more and nothing less

@eric; im sure Pieters will stay in the team and that he will keep improving im actually more confident in Pieters on the long run than i am at vdWiel

@goose– Velthuizen is buried deep in the bench. I don’t actually follow the Spanish League, but from the stats I’ve gathered, Piet has only started two times in the last 3 months or so. Even worse, the club is currently at the bottom of the table. So they may get relegated if they don’t recover. Not so good news for Velthuizen (AND Drenthe).

So the offense bailed out the defense this time and as long as oranje win, I’m happy. The 4 defenders are the weakest points, but they are able to get to the WC Final. Let’s give Pieters more time. The 2 CB are still young, but the 2 central defenders are not, esp Mathijsen. I hope Oranje qualifies asap and then BVM can give the chance for the younger players to start.

Jan sorry, I don´t know why I was thinking yesterday was wednesday instead Tuesday!!!!

I have my head in other planet!!!!!!

Guys, you think Mark van Bommel can become in our next Center Back????

By eric | March 30th, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Top

@Eduardo– No. Why would you want MvB as center back?

He is older than Mathijsen and Heitinga (we need to get younger). Van Bommel’s marking and positioning are average, I don’t think his is any better than Joris or Johnny. Van Bommel is not any faster. More importantly, Van Bommel is naughty and clumsy, which is part of his brand identity. I can see him giving away cheap penalties for nudging someone’s back for nothing.

The positive he’s bringing to defense is perhaps leadership, but imho Heitinga is already a great leader at the back, along with Stekelenburg.

U-17 qualified for the U-17 EC
And U-19 impressed vs England. :P eric just beat me to it, lol. And yes, Wijnaldum in that line up is the younger brother of Georginio Wijnaldum.
His name is Gilliano Wijnaldum and he;s an attacking minded LB.
I myself have high hopes for Özyakup and Castaignos

It´s hard loose a great leader like MvB…..but you are rigth.. he is not better than Mathinsen and Heitinga.

Imagine the 1998 Orange commanded by BvM instead of hiddink!

VdSar
Reizenger Stamp FBoder Numan
Cocu Davis
RdBoer Bergkamp Overmars
Kluivert

Bench: W. Jonk, Seedorf, Zenden, Hoijdonk, Hasselbaink

This team with the winner mentality of the 2010 Orange!

@Eduardo I agree with you MvB at CB would be lots lots better. Because if you watch all of our games it is clear to see that we are better with VdV in CM because we can possess much better and easier, and we can dominate teams, however we always get let down by Mathijsen and Heitingas inability to PASS the ball. They suck at passing, but if we put MvB back there then we could possess like Barca, and then why would we need to defend…

@Steve: That is awesome, but it is a bit of a commute for Tiju and myself. We would love to come.

Besides he has promised to use me as rounding buoy and make me look silly all day but I will run for a full 90 minutes and kick his arse anyways. :-)

Haha, sounds like me. They used to call me the Dutch plug (I play like Kuyt at CB) but I am afraid the nickname will soon be the Dutch pylon….

Come visit me!

Hugely impressed with Afellay over the two games. I think Robben might should be worried about his starting place at the moment!

The two game shave surely proved that we only need 1 defensive midfielder as well, as people have said before, we will always likely score more than the other team with Vaart there so we don’t need 2 DM’s.

I’d also like BVM to try MVB as a libero alongside Heitinga. Mathijsens ability is declining no doubt and by the summer of 2012 i worry that it will have declined too much. Yes MVB is older but he is better no question and there is no younger, suitable replacement for Mathijsen right now so I think MVB is worth a shot there.

Not really worried about the goalkeepers or about Pieters, he will be fine no doubt. People said Stek could not replace Sar, well he did and now Pieters will replace Gio too he just needs us to believe in him.

Overall a fantastic week, two beautiful attacking games played by Oranje and we have 18 points in the bag! so whats everyone complaining about :D
