Eredivisie Shenanigans….

Cruijff-Keizer
Frank de Boer selected Keizer and Cruyff for this weekend’s game…

Hi all, as you know by now, I will be watching weekend games till Monday night and won’t comment too much on actual matches.

I did see Arsenal’s win over Chelsea yesterday and highly enjoyed Van Persie’s ongoing success (although Wenger was lucky with his victory of course).

Twente – PSV is on the planning in 20 minutes or so and Man City after that.

I can share with you that in Holland, the heat is on with Ajax. And this time, not just the football stuff ( losing points all over the place) but with – again – management and governance issues.

The Board announced that Marco van Basten has said no to becoming the new technical director, because Johan Cruyff doesn’t want to play along. The Board leaked letters to the media, inwhich Cruyff appears to be “difficult”.

Cruyff and Van Basten deny this. But it’s clear that the current Board members ( including one Edgar Davids) and JC can’t see eye to eye. “Whoever gets those working together deserves the Nobel Peace prize”, a watcher declared.

Frank de Boer, Dennis Bergkamp, Wim Jonk, Henny Spijkerman and Danny Blind have declared to support JC. And Cruyff himself has said that he won’t walk away without a good fight.

Man….

Ronald Koeman has his own battles. After impressing against Ajax last week, he team lost hopelessly against Go Ahead Eagles for the National Cup. Koeman was quite clear: “They worked hard. Like horsses. But without brains. At this level you can finally see if a player has enough vision for top level. Our players totally misread the game.” Koeman saw the defeat as his biggest upset with Feyenoord.

koeman feyenoord

“These games need to be won. Did you see the draw? Two of the big clubs would be out. This is the shortest route to a trophy. I am very upset.”

Koeman also criticised a number of individuals, such as Diego Biseswar who behaves like a prima donna, John Guidetti ( the Man City loan player) who “doesn’t bring enough” and Erwin Mulder “who is insecure”.

At PSV, before the Twente game, news leaked that coach Fred Rutten was almost sacked this summer. The expectations of the former Hiddink assistant were high and his suspicious nature and weak communication skills are now seen as an inhibitor for great things. However, with the tremendous signings of Mertens, Strootman and Wijnaldum, he bought himself a new lease on life.

Gertjan Verbeek, the coach of leaders AZ Alkmaar is surprised with his team’s lead in the competition. “It’s a disgrace for Ajax that we are so far ahead.” adding more fuel to the rivalry between Alkmaar and Amsterdam ( only 15 km distance between the two cities).

Like he did last season with ADO Den Haag, John van den Brom is making his mark as the new crown prince of Dutch coaching. Vitesse was alsmost relegated last season, but the former Vitesse and Ajax player added his swagger to the Arnhem team like ADO last season, Van den Brom’s lads are smug in the top 5.

Jake 3 at the back was best demonstrated by the 88 Oranje team and is also an Ajax favourite. what this means that against a 4-4-2….you have 2 markers who stick to the 2 strikers ad one free man R Koeman or Danny Blind during those days. I like the system as the FREE man can often move forward as noone marks him.
Free man is often called “Libero” too.

thanks carlos
these days big teams play with 1 striker & 2wings or 3 strikers in 4-3-3. so its no longer take advantage of one free man?

Hee guys,

I hear a lot of discussion about the playing style against france and italy ‘08. Altought i agree that those games were one of the greatest games in Oranje history, most people forgot the best player in those games: Edwin van der Sar.

If you look at the statistics of that game you will see that the shots on target were even. VDS had some spectacular saves and kept us in the game. We could easily have lost those games if it wasn’t for VDS.

So even though that with the Ultra-attacking style we played some spectacular matches i prefer the more conservative style we have now. Our defense just isn’t up to the task. If we want to win the EC we must hold on to the path BVM has chosen. I think it is our best chance.

Robbert,

Yes, those games could have gone either way. But since then, the growth of those players has gone through the roof. Robben, van Persie, Sneijder, and Van der Vaart are way better now then they were then. Where our controlling midfielders in 08 were Engelaar (?!) and De Jong, it is now Van Bommel.

And that was after a time where Van Basten was experimenting with new players EVERY GAME. Jaliens, Landzaat, Romano Denneboom?? This team now has been playing together since Van Marwijk took over, and the chemistry is higher than it’s been in decades. Holland has improved in every single way since 2008.

Hate to rain on a parade but although VdV and Van Persie have been on fire, there seems to be an obvious problem with the big 4. Schnijder just doesn’t seem to like Van Persie, and Robben doesn’t seem to either. Might be voetbal style, might be something else, but for a long time, it appears that they just won’t pass to him.

Van M seems to have been reasonably patient – but it his a hard thing to resolve, because Oranje scores when you move the ball quickly and if you don’t involve one of your strikers – especially the one in the middle, really slows you down.

The other challenge is to get a group of defenders who can defend and start the counter attack quickly. And clearly Oranje is working on that too.

Third, the 2008 games were even in shots – but the Oranje shots in the 3 wins were a lot harder and more direct. They did thump Italia, France and Rounmania.

Russia was another story – but remember Boularhouz lost a child the day before. I can’t imagine playing when a teammates just lost a kid.

Primo,

I hope your right. The only way to find out is by playing the ultra attacking style against top teams, for example against Germany in november.although i don’t think BVM will ever do this.

I don;t agree that Sneijder has an on-field problem with Van Persie. Same with Robben. These guys are professionals and among the best at what they do. And they realize that about eachother too. It’s been a while since they have all played together, but at the World Cup Van Persie really was incredibly isolated. People say he failed but he didn’t even really get that many chances. I think if we have VdV playing (not on the wing though) as DM with vanBommel then he would have got more service.

It’s looking more and more like van Marwijk will go with vBommel/Van der Vaart as De Jong seems to have been benched during his injury spell. The 6-1 rout of Man Utd without him didn’t help him much either.

Why is the German media attacking Robben so much?? It’s not like he was bought for 90MM Euros and he doesn’t make crazy money in Munich. Why are they trying to kick him out of Bayern’s squad?? Yes, Bayern is winning a lot of good games this year without him included, but can anyone see them beat Man Utd with Muller and Ribery only?? Can they even dream to match up against Barcelona with Kroos?

Quality wise, he’s definitely on par with Messi and a step ahead of Ronaldo but both these make soo much more money then he does, so what is wrong with him being hurt for parts of the season?

Germans doesn’t like Dutch.

Why don’t they like Robben?

A) He’s Dutch (agreed)
B) He’s mouthy and opionated.
C) He’s never had great field vision,
D) He’s injury prone.
E) He’s still Dutch.

Also, in general although Robben is a fantastic dribbler, fast as all get out and has a great shot, he’s not one of the best, because he just doesnt’ have the field vision. It’s always been his weakness, he just isn’t a great passer. And that’s what makes him not quite up there with Ronaldo or Messi.

Also think De Jong will be back at Man City – Mancini loves to rotate his players, which is wise given the length of the season.

Peoples dont understand that combination of big4 cannot work together mainly because of lack of work rate of roben and his selfishness.Sniejder doesnt seems to give any pass to persie and vaart doesnt play goos like a winger. So it will nor work.ok then BVM puts kuyt on wing and raf or Roben will loose their place and we know kuyt cannot hold the ball for a second and not as skilled as others. So rythem of attcaks breaks there. With additon of Dejong and bommel makes more hard to play beautiful football.and Raf cannot play well there,i think bommel is 35 and Bvm should play with Dejong and Strootman there.i beleive vanpersie can do the magic from left wing also.

@Keko: Not too many countries like the Germans either. Although they seem to be quite proud of finishing second in back-to-back world wars. Go figure. :-)

samuel Oudegeest,I disagree there about Robben. He is a great passer,he just doesnt pass often because of his selfishness. But he can easily find a killer pass when he wants to.

I totally disagree with Oudegeest. If you have seen the last two season of Robben (I doubt), you would find his assists were amazing. He’s devoloped a really good field vision.

Finn: :D

robben: for me he’s one of the 6 best player of the world (iniesta, messi, robben, ronaldo, sneijder, xavi),but the main problem with him is that he’s regularly injured 6 months or even more per year. if i was a clubmanager i wouldn’t sign him, because the worst thing is to have a diamond but you can do nothing with this diamond…

Keko,

Agreed we don’t get Bundesligia much in the States, so I haven’t seen a lot of Robben. So, I’m looking at his Oranje passing, which has been quite limited since he doesn’t play often.

Hopefully get to watch some of his Champions League matches.
