Dirk Kuyt back in Utrecht; PSV’s easy win

dszud

PSV booked their first win in Europe this season. The away game against Metalist, expected to be tough, turned into an easy win by an energized PSV.

After 25 minutes, Metalist lost a player when Villagra saw red after fouling Toivonen. The ref also awarded a penalty to PSV and Dszudszak didn’t fail. PSV led with 1-0 and was one man up. What could go wrong? PSV kept on attacking and using the width of the park allowing for more chances. Not much after the 1-0, Erik Pieters allowed Marcus Berg to score the 2-0. The Norwegian player scored a beauty and saw the ball roll tauntingly over the line: 2-0.

PSV clearly had less difficulty with the circumstances. The pitch was heavy and soaking wet in the downpour of rain but the technically skilled Brazilians in Metalist’s attack were struggling to stay up.

After the break, PSV could have scored a third, but Toivonen hit the cross bar. Lens, Berg and Toivonen got more chances but the sense of urgency was gone and PSV played out the game.

FC Utrecht confirmed their status and ambition as cup fighter in their home game against Liverpool. The English behemoth haven’t lost a game in Holland in 44 years and wouldn’t in the Galgenwaard, although Utrecht surely deserved more than the 0-0.

Utrecht did have a handful of serious chances but lacked the killer-instinct in the critical moments.
Utrecht actually took the lead in the 25th minute when defender Wuytens sctoed a good goal but it was disallowed due to an alleged foul by Mulenga. Liverpool missed Steven Gerrard who was rested.

Utrecht demonstrated passion and courage and make the play. Dries Mertens and Van Wolfswinkel got good chances but Pepe Reyna was wide awake. The Liverpudlians didn’t offer much in return. Fernando Torres had the best chance but goalie Michel Vorm saved the day.

Dirk Kuyt’s return to the stadium where he played 5 seasons was one of the headlines. He played at Utrecht before moving to Feyenoord where he caught Liverpool’s eyes. Kuyt was injured prior to this game and worked very hard to be fit in time to play in his old stadium. Kuyt’s only trophy in his career was one at Utrecht! ( the national cup in 2003). Kuyt received a standing ovation when he made his entrance.

“That’s something I will always cherish. I worked hard to be here but never realized I’d get this welcome. Utrecht deserves kudos for the way they played. I warned the players here for Utrecht’s passion but being aware of it doesn’t mean you can stop it… Still, I think we’ve done well. If you win your home games and steal a point away, you can win the group. We’re on course.”

European football is important for Liverpool after the dramatic start in the domestic league. Liverpool is currently the number 16.

@David… what do have to admit???? I have stated many times that “I do not like the way Nigel plays football” in fact please quote me in future on this “I absolutely loathe what he does on a football pitch” So you have made no revaltions there I’m affraid!

It’s not because he “gets stuck” Scott Parker gets stuck in but I don’t have anything against him. Viera, Davids,
makekele, deschamps, peitit “got stuck in”. Cambiasso, gattusso, Senna, Essien, Yaya “get stuck in” and I admire all these players, why?

Simle because they had something else to offer, they anchor midfield, command the defense, had gracefull pass, read the game well, timed tackles well man marked well, threat on goals, drive, compsure on the ball etc etc. They all had/have offer abilities as defensive midfielders. Nigel de Jong is just a creation of todays modern football fuelled by ever negative managers to scared to risks who employ defensive formations. Formations that require one man just to sit tackle, foul cynically and pick up yellow cards.

Nigel de Jong is that man. Fair enough if thats the type of player he wants to be then so be it. But what I cannot stand for is the menace, over the top nature, intent to hurt or impose/scare that persistently shows in his tackles hense why he has caused a few nasty injuries. You can make a hard tackle without being a bully.

I do not like him as a footballer (modern day defensive midfielder)… true, but I dislike him even more when he shows his nasty nature about the pitch.

@Lucas: Nigel De Jong is the closest thing to Mother Theresa in a football shirt.

He shows compassion, gives more than he takes, cares for the injured and makes sure the stretcher is brought on in a timely manner.

What is there not to love about that?

I agree with lucas, de Jong is a loose cannon… I would be worried when he was in my team. Maybe vmarwijk will finally realise he is not oranje material and oust him for good. And give vd vaart permanently the midfield or another creative player in stead of de Jong , we dont need de Jong and Bommel anyways…we need more football in the squad. Maybe a good thing this happened…

Ajax lost shockingly! and were horrific, there is no system in the field, and they just improvise, Cruijff is right, ajax must learnn to play the ball around based on technique and train the first touch alll over again. Jol had his use but it seems to have stopped working.

Lucas, I think you have lost it my friend. I agree with David on this one. Nigel is truly great and was an amazing player for Ajax. He has fabulous technique but yes plays hard. Nothing wrong with that. Please stop bashing him and focus more on the true dirty players of the world. Trust me there are plenty of those out there.

Take that bulldog called De Jong away from football and at the same time you can take that bitch called finnster out of the blog. Send them where they belong, that´s to say, a dog pound, where they can give love each other. And yes, Jeff, let´s focus on the true dirty players of the world, Van Bommel for instance. Dutch football and dutch fans still being a shame for the world. A player breaks someone´s leg for seven months and the dog call him “the closest thing to Mother Theresa”… pfffff, no surprise, probably he´s on drugs as most of his country.

Sorry jeff but if you consider Nigel de Jong to be technically gifted at all or compared to some of the other players (all defensive midielders)I mentioned in my previous post i.e. Petit, Davids, senna, viera etc then you clearly haven’t watched enough football!

Let’s forget about the tackling side if his game for a minute.

His passing is mediocre at best, he us often careless on the ball (he was caught in possession numerous times against Newcastle yesterday) and lacks compare and has no creativity going forward!

Does that speak of a “brilliant” player?

I am of the opinion that De Jong is technically on par, if not better, with some of the best holding midfielders out there. His passing in underrated, and he has a great positioning that enable him to close down opponent quicker than any of his teammates. De Jong played as a left back in his youth days, started as a right back in Ajax senior team, before transitioned to defensive midfielder. That’s a clear testimony how good he is on and off the ball.

There are definitely top-class DM’s out there with worse skills than De Jong. Petit, Gattuso, Sissoko, and, especially Makelele didn’t strike me at all as players with technique. They rely on hard work and big lungs to get their jobs done. Senna, maybe, after all he’s Brazilian who put premium value on skills. Viera, Davids, and (one of my all-time fave) Redondo are probably the ones who I would consider to have great techniques. And it’s not fair to compare De Jong with some of the finest box-to-box midfielders, the likes of Essien, Song, Carrick, Obi Mikel, Ballack, Yaya Toure, Xavi Alonso, Pirlo, etc. They perform different function, and different kinds of skill level are required.

Now, whether or not De Jong has the ‘brain’ to do the job, that’s a entirely new discussion. Some of his decisions are kinda idiotic, frankly, and I think this is a huge area for him to improve.

Jad, you´re putting a tackle by Xabi Alonso where he clearly is going for the ball and he clearly touchs it first. Anyway, a single tackle doesn´t make a player dirty and you won´t find a COMPILATION of Xabi like this of De Jong [ http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2010/10/3/1728068/reaching-a-consensus-should-nigel-de-jong-be-considered-a-dirty-player ] and of course you won´t find a discussion about him by his own countrymen like this [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woMZ7M2BcKk ]. Alex, Jeff, Finnster and De Jong himself… When you find my IP address, you are free to come here and s.u.c.k. my pinga if you want.

Anyone here saw the derby d’italia? Inter-Juve? Sneijder is by far the most consistent Dutch star of this generation. No other Dutch stars come close to him. I’m very irritated at how VPersie and Robben get injured so much, they’re anonymous!

Bayern have the worst attack in the league.

Arjen Robben gentleman,

this guy is sensational. He would have my vote for world player of the year.

How about Liverpool and Everton? So poor, I am not even suprised about Blackpool winning.

I am not a great deJong fan but hard men like him (and Davids in his prime) are the first names on the team sheet. When Mancini replaced 2 midfielders for attacking players who went off ? Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry. Left with only one midfielder who had to be able to repossess – start attacking moves and be able to pass the ball. One name “De Jong” was the last man standing in the middle.
But then what does Mancini know huh ?
I do not however condone crunching tackles but know they are part of the game.

It’s funny that when it’s de Jong there is a huge outcry about his ‘dirty tackles’, but when it’s an English player breaking someone’s leg it’s a ‘unfortunate accident’. The fact is that there are certain teams in the EPL who base their entire team strategy on overly-physical challenges week-in, week-out, and no one says very much.

It’s a shame when someone (Alberto) came to this blog to insult people. It´s typically Spanish …. so arrogant. I know them very well because I am from Venezuela, and we have lots in common … but this arrogant character don´t, thanks to god!

That’s why I was so angry when Netherlands lost the WC final. The best Spanish team of the history defeated the 6th Netherlands teams of the history (because 74, 78, 1998, 1990, 1994, 2006 were better)…

I am not agree with this De Jong entrance… but don´t judge like Judas. BVM take off the national team for a while…. I just hope don´t substitute De Jong with De Zeuw or Schards

@Eduardo: Good post. I also wonder every time we have a troll on here they are always posting from Spain?

What is up with that? I know they have loads of time on their hands as they aren’t working, but why come on here and bother us? I don’t go and post on their site every time I feel like it.

I guess respect for somebody else’s house is not high on the list for Spanish upbringings.

Eduardo: i consider the world cup team was the 5th best in dutch football history – after the 74,90,78,98 teams (in this order). the big difference between bert van marwijk and leo benhakker is that bvm lead his men to the final and lost against the all the time best spanish national side when they were only 10 on the field without gio, and on the other hand leo’s supertalented team with 4 more than worldclass players (gullit, rijkaard, van basten,r. koeman) was eliminated in the 1/16…
