Bert van Marwijk’s summer-tour

Mark van Bommel is back!
Today, Bert van Marwijk’s tenure with Oranje really starts. In the past couple of weeks he traveled around Europe to see his boys perform again after the EC2008. The friendly against Russia will be “the introduction game”, according to Van Marwijk, who knows six players from personal history at Feyenoord and Fortuna Sittard.
He will meet the rest of the group (minus injured Boulah and Engelaar) today at the Amsterdam Arena trainings pitch. He’ll then fly to Moscow with the group where he’ll appoint his captain in the hotel tomorrow.
Van Marwijk had as his objective a face to face meeting and a match of every player. The only players he missed were Andre Ooijer and Boulah, the latter due to his injury.
“I think we have a good idea of where the players are at this moment. I also spend some time with De Haan’s team in Hong Kong. It was an intense period, but it was worth it.”
Assistant Cooky Voorn was at Van Marwijk’s side when he did his tour. The other two assistants, Frank de Boer and Phillip Cocu, will join the staff around qualification matches.
Cocu works as an apprentice at PSV and will be able to closely follow Afellay, while Frank de Boer is youth coach at Ajax. Oranje scout and analyst Ronald Spelbos followed Dirk Kuyt in his CL match with Liverpool against Standard Luik.
Van Marwijk will also follow AZ Alkmaar, for the position of holding midfielder. AZ used to be the main supplier of players under Van Basten, at certain times, and now Van Marwijk will closely monitor De Zeeuw and Stijn Schaars, who finally came back from a severe injury.
The first training Van Marwijk led was a set of positioning games, just to get in the flow of things.
Mark van Bommel made his comeback in the orange jersey. Cocu and De Boer made their debuts as assistant coaches.
Van Bommel wouldn’t find it logical if he is handed the skippers armband: “I’ve been a way for while. I wasn’t part of the journey for two years. To me, it would be unlogical to hand me the band.”
Van Bommel emphasized that he’s very happy to be back. “And I do get the feeling the lads are happy to see me again. I never had any problems with the group. I just couldn’t work with Van Basten.”
The Bayern skipper doesn’t expect any issues with his team manager and father in law. “I worked as a player under him at Fortuna. That went very well too. When we’re at Oranje, he is not my kids granddad. He is the team manager. And I always had my issues with my coaches so I’m definitely going to have words with this one as well.”

I am very curious about tomorrow’s game, I hope we kick their asses and prove it was only a 1 game surprise.
I like the fact that Van Maarwijk is calling a small group of players instead of calling a preliminary list of 30 players as Marco used to do, this will give the Orange more consistency and players will get to gel better. I hope we can see a team with a lot of guts and trying to play some good attacking football.

A little Norwegian update as Oranje are soon to face them.
According to Norwegia papers, Steffen Iversen (striker, ex Spurs, Wolves and now at Rosenborg, typical 3.6 meters tall Norwegian attacker with no speed) was sent home after failing to show up for the 12:00 team meeting prior to the friendly against Ireland tomorrow.
Iversen is usually a starter alongside John Carew. May mean that Erik Nevland (ex-cult hero from Groningen now Fulham) gets another start
Iverson’s reason was he “over slept”, yet he was spotted on town drinking and going to a party afterwards. The head coach sent him home.
Not the best of preparations leading up to the Holland game. Also John Carew picked up a knock for Aston Villa this weekend and is unlikely to play.
Looks like Norway has their own squad issues leading into the first couple of WC2010 qualifiers.

Gio is picked as captain.
Finn, thanks for the Norwegian updates. Keep it up.
Ono, the Gomes “thing” was a shot in the dark. The man has international games for Brazil under his belt, so this won’t fly. He since left Holland through the backdoor after kicking a stink at PSV… It won’t happen…
Alex, the Oranje future looks bright indeed, but that’s always the case. Our past is bleak, our present “could have should have” but our future always looks bright!
Even with De Boers, Bergkamp, Kluivert, Overmars, Cocu, Stam, Sar, Davids and Seedorf we weren’t able to win a big prize…

Well from the reporters in Moscow, spying on the line up, this is what it will look like with Gio Capt and VdV vice.
Stekelenburg;
Heitinga, Ooijer, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst;
Van Bommel, De Jong;
Kuijt, Van der Vaart, Robben;
Huntelaar

Again, 4-3-3? No Van Persie?

Hmm, sorry. I think it is 4-2-3-1.

My view is that Arsenal do not want vP to play 90 mins(remember last October ?), same goes for Liverpool/Kuyt etc Intl coaches usually ring up the team coaches (and vice versa) to ask if players have a problem etc and then promises are made about playing time. SAF was very angry with Advocaat when he had promised to only play van Gol 45 mins but ended up playing him 80 mins.

Oh and remember that was only the line up reporters are guessing……

Same old fragile back line…

Well, de Jong and van Bommel in the middle should be really good, but can’t we really find someone to place Oijer and Mathijsen already? We need new defenders.

1-1; russian penalty (foul by vBronckhorst)
very nice game. esp. for a friendly played in august!! pretty strong overall performance
our defensive midfield with vBommel (who played good) and deJong
we had many changes to win this game but the russian goalie was great

Rvn wouldve scored 5 goals with the chances that went begging.. that was one hell of a frustrating match.. it was probably robben, huntelaar, kuyt, at their worst.. but all in all it was good, even if we deserved to win..
Van bommel and De Jong were strong, especially Mark. Heitinga was good, but the rest of the backline, i cant wait to get rid of.. We need marcellis, and zuiverloon!!

@ramy; its always positive if you create many changes..with strikers a bit more sharp we would have won easily
i was pretty happy that they played a ‘real’game
but you could see we miss Sneijder, Huntelaar got no decent balls
Robben was just looking for own glory
all in all a nice game

agree,
Huntelaar was not fed decently.. but dont think he was playing good either..
Im happy for van Bommel.. Wish Seedorf was among the group as well.. Hes still an amazing player and deserves a place in the squad.

Van Bommel / De Jong duo seemed pretty strong. I was pissed off at Robben who was again like a 20-year old wannabe star, trying to take all the glory by taking hard shots instead of passing the ball to a free teammate. Huntelaar didn’t get any good balls as well, so that was a bit worrying.
But all in all it was a good game. NL created many good chances and the game was fast-paced. I think Marwijk might turn out to be a solid coach.

Yes agree with most comments- Goose especially.
Huntelaar not fed at all,the few touches he had was ok.De Jong very solid and vB provided some steel. Robben sadly didnt play for the team. vP great goal but should have scored twice more at least.Gio also solid as was Heitinga. Hesselink played decent but should have put that open goal chance away in injury time.
Quite happy with the general play – bring in Wesley leave out Robben.
