Ajax & Sparta: highs and lows for historic clubs…
Both Ajax and Sparta received headlines in the Dutch media recently. I should have and could have posted on this before ( as pointed out by one of you) but my busy schedule and something called “the World Cup” sort of got in the way.

But…there’s always time for an interesting story, in particular if it’s about two of our most historic and famous clubs.
Ajax and Sparta. They both stands for tradition, values, a rich history, good football and wonderful youth development.
The Sons of Gods are ready to win the title soon and dazzle in the Champions League again (one might only hope). The Castle Lords, however, faced their second relegation in the history of the club. A tremendous downer for all who love Sparta.
And despite my Feyenoord-blood, I do respect and admire Sparta. Like every level-headed football fan in Holland has a soft spot for the Rotterdam based club. To start off with, Sparta is the oldest professional football club in the country, founded in 1888. They won the title 6 times. They won the National Cup three time. Secondly, their venue is an actual castle (or better: former castle…the venue is called Spangen but everybody calls it “The Castle”). Thirdly, they do have that classic striped jersey. Fourth: they always play decent football. Technically skilled, adventurous, pass and move football. And last but not least, Sparta has – or used to have – one of the best youth development systems in the country.
It was eight or nine years back when Sparta got relegated for the first time in their rich history. A tremendous trauma, of course. And made only more dramatic because at the time, one Frank Rijkaard was their coach. He was fresh from leading the Dutch team to the European Cup in the EC2000… ( Or…hang on…? Wasn’t there something with penalties? Against Italy? I might have it wrong
). And despite this eternal shame with Sparta, he did move up to becoming Barcelona’s coach afterward and did won some silverware, if I’m not mistaken….
As a Feyenoord fan ( the peoples’ club) I did have and still have tremendous respect for our more up-market brothers in the West. Sparta was The Club to aim for, when you grew up in my little town close to Rotterdam. Feyenoord was too tough to get into as a kid. They also didn’t allow a lot of youth players to play in the first team. Feyenoord bought more than they developed, back then. And Sparta was inventive. Had tremendous scouts. So when one of my best buddies was snubbed by Feyenoord but signed by Sparta, I’d follow him to games on many accounts and got to love the Castle club. My mate went on to play for Sparta 1 and through him I got to meet one of his team mates, skipper and playmaker Louis van Gaal.
Sparta was an accessible club. It was “gezellig”. And the football was good. They even made it quite far in the UEFA Cup tournament with tremendous games against Sparta Moscow and HSV Hamburg.
Today’s Sparta has some interesting prospects on the pitch. And the question is, what will happen with Duplan, Poepon and Falkenburg now they got relegated again. In a sensational match of brother-murder (they played the third Rotterdam club: Excelsior for a spot in the Eredivisie) and whilst they were 1-0 up, they conceded a seriously late goal (far in stoppage) which meant that Excelsior promoted and Sparta got relegated.
Interestingly enough, Ajax and Sparta always had a warm relationship. Mutual respect on the topic of youth development of course, and in the 1980s the link became stronger with Louis van Gaal – Ajax man through and through – playing for Sparta and later moving back to Amsterdam. I seem to remember he coached Ajax for a bit too… Danny Blind made the move from the Castle to Ajax, as did Winston Bogarde and later Nordin Boukhari.

Ajax then…. They won. The National Cup. And against Feyenoord, which tastes double as sweet. They had won 2-0 at home, thanks to two massive mistakes by Feyenoord. Goalie Mulder dropped the ball in Siem de Jong’s stride, while Feyenoord was down for eight counts after that goal, Ajax took advantage and immediately scored the 2-0. The fans yelled “ten, ten, ten”….
Feyenoord had to win at home 3-0 and had a game plan. The new old hero Makaay played in the starting line up and Mario Been came up with a tremendous tactical plan: “We need to score a really early goal. Then they’ll get nervous. With another goal before the break, we’d be even. I’m sure they’ll get really anxious in the second half and they won’t know whether to attack or defend. With the Legion behind us, we’ll beat them.”
Well, that early goal came alright. But it was Suarez scoring it. Mistake Landzaat. Turnaround Suarez. Swirling ball at goal from 30 meters. 0-1. Game over. After four minutes. Siem de Jong would score two more. Tomasson had the consolation goal, before again Suarez – chased by Manchester United for 23 million euros – scored the 1-4. Total score line Ajax – Feyenoord 6-1!

One can say Ajax deserved their 18th National Cup.

Well not world beaters but as a team could do very well I think and anyway perhaps its not known that Suarez is wanted by ManU Ajax want 40m) – Verthongen by Tottenham and Everton – Ruiz by Wolfsburg – Douglas by everyone – Affelay by Valencia – Stekelenberg should go to Arsenal- vd Wiel by everyone in Italy and Arsenal – Vlaar will probably go to EPL . So put these in a team together with those new clubs behind their names and its impressive. Ronaldo and Romario were in this same team once

Guys,
The wait for the world cup has become agonizing…What will we do until June 11th? Of course we can discuss champions league and friendlies, but that’s not the real thing.
Analysis of Dutch performance in Euro 2008:
Italy:- We owned them. Everybody played above their potential, and we controlled this game and could have score even more. There was a 20 min. spell in the second half when the Italians were in the ascendancy.
France:- The goals were spectacular, but they actually hid some serious flaws. We created hardly any chances apart from these goals, relied on sudden counter-attack based on the lightning speed and audacity of our forwards.
Verdict:- Forwards were brilliant, but rest (except V.der Sar) were mediocre, leading to no link-up between defence and attack. Our goals came mainly through superb counter-attacks where the defense and defensive midfield could be bypassed and the ball supplied directly to the forwards. These flaws were cruelly exposed in the game against Russia, where the supply was cut off and we rarely threatened apart from set-pieces.
The situation now:-
Forwards are much better (form and class both improved). That looks scary for other teams.
Defensive midfield:- v Bommel and an improved de Jong has made this department much better.
back 5:- nothing much to crow about. Steks for v.der sar is a step backwards in terms of class, but that may be offset by a slightly better defense.
Hence, all in all , we are much better than the Euro 2008 team. I hope we put it across Brazil in the Q/F’s. That game will determine if we can go all the way, which i’m sure we can.
Its all about finishing, sure you need to create attempts too, but to win the game you must convert shots into goals. 08 looked like it could have been special. The goals vs the giants were amazing and equally shocking. Robben v France, that goal was like a magic trick. Sneijder v Italy, amazing how he squeezed that in. Those goals were special, we don’t need special, we just need! They have to focus on really making the best of their opportunities, especially the early ones. Both 08 and 06 we couldn’t finish. Oh my, Cocu vs Portugal off the bar, tear. So just get the ball in the net, keep it simple from the beginning. I know they don’t control the game as much as I’m asking them to, but we’ve all seen shot attempts with no chance of going in. Don’t try too hard for the corners till later in the game, and most importantly make the opposing team goalie earn the win.

Nothing new, I just like the quote from Bert, cliche but exactly what I want to hear.
Orange dutchman……..i think in 2006Wc,cocu tried for a ferocious shot goal.that lead to hit the bar,if he tried with less force it would have been gone to the post like ,Znijder did to Buffon in 20089(i mean just placing).the truth is very few players are able to hit the bar from such a close angle/over shoots over the bar like Cocu,Zeadorf etc..i would say that shot was a demonic shot and in a way we were unlucky, but i should say that the last generation midfielder never had shot accuracy, other wise they would have scored bunch of goals,You must see the chance blown up by Zeadorf,Cocu etc in crucial orange games. We can say that they scored goals but when,??????when they scored when it really counted??????our total hope was Bergakamp and kluivert in those crucial matches,Except fluke goal of davids against Yugoslavia..
Can you imagine if it was Ruud instead of Cocu???????????.i can bet that Ricardo wont even see the ball before going to the goal and ricardo would have seen the ball after the ball bounce backed from the net…That is what accuracy. We must be proud that we have Roben,Znijder,,Hunter even kuyt is accurate in their shots.

@ Carlos, on vi.nl is a far better team of the season in my opinion.
About Wijnaldum, lots of technique there ,and tricks, but he needs to get some understanding and plan in his play, cause at the moment, when he gets the ball he just starts running and seems to become oblivious for his teammates, most of the time it results in nothing, but if he can actually start to think, he can be a real class player.
Someone asked about the U-17, well Ouasim Bouy from Ajax is topscorer of the youth Eredivisie i thought, and tipped by Sjaak Swart himself for greatness. Also CB Fabian Sporkslede, and midfielder Davy Klaassen were mentioned by him and I agree.
I’d say Sporkslede, V.Huijgevoort are the promising defenders from the U-17’s.
But attacking wise, I’d say Ouasim Bouy, Jurgen Locadia, Adam Maher, Davy Klaassen, Lesley de Sa, Elvis Manu and Anthony van den Hurk are pretty promising players, don’t know if there’s another Cruijff in there though xD. I could give some more details on them later.

The team on vi.nl is
———-Stekelenburg
V.d.Wiel-Douglas-Vlaar-Anita
Bakkal-Brama-De Zeeuw-T.Janssen
——-Ruiz—Suarez
Now that’s a good defence and attack, midfield is doubtful, but best there is.

@Jeff, to me youth players developed by a club (Ajax or any other club) are players scouted at a young age (14, 15 or younger) like Van Basten, Vanenburg, Sneijder, Vaart etc who went through the youth system.
Zlatan was signed for Ajax 1. He played for Jong Ajax (young Ajax) for sure but the only thing they added to him was the Ajax tactical system. At 19 years old, most players have developed their skills technically.
This is why Zlatan clashed within Ajax with coaches and players.
Suarez, same thing. Came to FC Groningen, played there for 2 seasons (?) and went to Ajax as a first team player. Not developed in Amsterdam, in other words.
I do totally support your comments on the number of ex-Ajax players in de Eredivisie or historically in Oranje, but don’t overestimate it.
Blind, Wouters, Bogarde, Jonk, Petturson, Overmars, Koeman, De Zeeuw were not developed by Ajax for instance.
Witschge, De Boers, Roy, Van der Vaart, Vanenburg, Bergkamp were.
Litmanen is a borderline case for me. Probably not an Ajax developed player…
@ Carlos Buddy did u even read what I wrote, I said I actually spoke to Bert, and he told me that stuff about Khalid, Gio, Edson, Piet, Sander..etc so dont accuse me of being a sensationlist..btw guys what do u reckon of Theo Janssen..he seems an amzing player whenever i’ve seen him, better at dead-ball than perhaps van hooijdonk, exceptional playmaker, and dribbles much better than van der vaart or sneijder, infact he’s already got international caps for the ORANJE, so why is he being overlooked, he;s at the peak of his career, an relatively young!!!
Check out Kuyt in that same 06 game, two real good chances, should have had a least one of them. Bottom line, I hope our guys don’t have one of those frustrating games. Only look at the two games Portugal and Russia, 175minutes(Ruud 85′ vs. Russia) to score one goal. I just want our guys to focus on getting quality shots on net, like I said before, try for the corners later.
Alex thanks for the Wijnaldum info. In the videos I can see him being a little too creative, but I really can’t fault him, he does it with heart and drive. Sounds like if we can just teach him to look up more often maybe his whole game can improve. He needs to utilize that insane acceleration, hopefully in the future Robin can teach him a few things about quick changes in direction.
Also thanks for the insight on our U-17, Bouy will be turning 17 the day the WC starts:)

Which in your opinion is highest on the Cruijff-O-meter? More details later would be awesome, a top ten future orange list of some sort maybe.
I just wonder how on earth Srinjoy talked to V.Marwijk, explain, or drop it.

BTW U-21 played in the following line-up
————Padt
Janmaat-Marcellis-Bruma-Pieters
Fer-Wijnaldum-V.Aanholt
S.De Jong-L.De Jong-Biseswar
I have to say I dont know how the line up was exactly, but it wasnt the strongest one we can muster.
Actually V.Aanholt played leftmidfield.
Defence caused us the match, I’m afraid Marcellis is slipping into nothingness, can’t even impress in young oranje.
I’d have to say Biseswar is very average. We did miss, Dost, V.Wolfswinkel, Strootman, Falkenburg, and perhaps…Anita. He played CDM for U-21 impressively a few times.
I think in this U-21 team, Fer should always be the CDM, with the rest of midfield in front of him.

After a training session in Austria. I’m on holiday here in Salzaburg, Innsbruck, Vienna etc. Met him at Innsbruck. Quite a lot of Oranje fans there aswell u’ll be glad to hear!
i meant: defence cost us the game.

@ Alex ..ARe u out of our mind…diego Biseswar is the main man in the Under 21’s..infact he is such a start that he continues to be anaylyzed and lauded before and every match on the Dutch Voetbal Channel they broadcast it on by the likes of Cocu and de Boer etc, and even when he wasn’t feautering for Feyenoord, he was the main man for the Under 21’s..all others like wijnaldum, van wolfswinkel play under his shadow…diego’s got amazing dribbling skills (low centre of gravity like messi ) an OUT OF THIS WORLD LONG RANGE SHOT , and good crossing
Actually I’m more sane than you can imagine, thank you.
Don’t try to make up an opinion for me, I know what I see and I don’t care whatever Cocu or De Boer say ocasionally. Diego is average for the moment, he may do well against equally average U-21 players, but I’ve seen Feyenoord, he does everything with his right foot, he eventually always cuts in, he always seems a threat, but actually hardly anything impressive comes from him in Feyenoord. If you would have folloew Feyenoord you would know that he doesn’t stand out there. For now, he’s still a limited player, wo can dribble, but often just dribbles into nomansland, tries to go past 2 extra opponents and loses he ball. Biseswar needs a lot of work if he wants to be impressive in my book.
If he’s so good, why isn’t he in the Eredivisie team of the season, or even close to it.

Correction, he does almost everything with his right foot, he usually cuts in.
He does have speed, good technique and a great shot, but he should have had a lot more goals and assists to be considered impressive. Otherwise even Duplan and Overtoom could be selected for oranje at the moment.

I don’t think Srinjoy said Biseswar should be in Oranje
.
It’s true that Biseswar has been hailed as a future star. He’s a known prospect for years at Feyenoord but his attitude and personality work against him. For now. (See Van Persie). He did have a good season last year, but Been chose to play Cisse more than Biseswar and Diego is a lad who needs confidence from his coach.
Wijnaldum for me is still a question mark. He’s got skill, for sure. But being great at junior level doesn’t necessarely make you great at top level.
Many examples of sensational youth players who never made it to the World top: Vanenburg, Oulida, Rijnink, Van der Gun, Mario Been, etc etc
Well, you kind of missed the point then, cause i didn’t relate oranje to Biseswar, only said if Biseswar can be considered impressive, than Duplan and Overtoom could be selected for oranje. That’s the comparison. Well Duplan might be exhaderated, but since Overtoom has had a far better season, and if Biseswar has been impressive than Overtoom would have to fall in the category brilliant. Something which is ridiculous.
So if Biseswar us impressive, than certainly Overtoom would be brilliant, thus oranje material. This was just To illustrate my opinion about Biseswar. Hope its clear now.
