Warm up for the Olympics: Gerald Sibon

July 15th, 2008 | By: Jan | 9 Comments »

We checked out Nordin Amrabat in the first of this series. Now it’s time for Heerenveen striker Gerald Sibon.

He is in the autumn of his career. The 34 year old Heerenveen striker will go to Bejing as one of the dispensation players. And he intends to enjoy! But, winning is everything. “I am not going for the Olympic thought of participating is more important than winning. It’s winning, right? We’ll go for gold.”

He’d love to follow in the footsteps of Van den Hoogenband and Van Grunsven. “I think it’s fantastic what they have achieved! And who knows, they will be in China as well. I think it is just brilliant when you can work for four years to peak at the right moment and grab gold. In sports, you’re a hot shot when you can do that!”

The former Ajax and PSV players is a huge Olympic fan. “I remember the games in 1992 in Barcelona with the American dream team basketball team. Man… Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson… That was superb. I was glued to the screen.”

Gerald Sibon will pack his books (thrillers) and his laptop to stay in tough with home. “I intend to reach Bejing. That’s the goal and I am very confident. I always wanted to see the Square of Heavenly Peace and the Forbidden City. That, and winning gold…”

@michel; he is referring to the three exemption players (over-aged players) that each team is allowed to have on their roster. e.g. Brazil is using Ronaldinho and Robinho etc.

Goose - you lucky devil! I wish I was on a sunny beach in France. Remember to wear your Oranje jersey around :-)

As for Gerald Sibon, I don’t know too much about him - what type of player is he? What style of striker?

Sheffield Wednesday fans do not have pleasant memories of Sibon - the most common description being him having the ability and movement of a lamp post. Would have thought him nowhere good enough to play in the Olympics.

willemina Sibon was my great grandmother. She left for Grand Haven, Michigan USA. She was wirn in 1851, possibly in Coevorden where she later married my great grandfather, Harm Nakken.

My son is an avid soccer fan and and helps coach it. Just wonder if it runs in his Dutch blood?
