The Definitive EC-team according to AD-readers

The AD readers – and maybe you too – have chosen their definitive team. Edwin van der Sar was the no-brainer on goal. As right full back they wised up and picked champion Sergio Ramos
Portugal’s Pepe and Spain’s Puyol guard the center while Russian Zhirkov beat Gio by a few votes.
Brazilian Spaniard Marcos Senna impressed this tournament and is one of the holding midfielders. Nigel de Jong was awarded with the other spot for his excellent performance.
Schweinsteiger is the only German to be picked, winning against his fellow team mate Michael Ballack. Andrei Arshavin kept his shadow-striker spot, despite his disappointing game against Spain.
Despite this, Barca offered to pay 15 Mio euros for the St Petersburg star.
Wesley Sneijder earned his spot on the basis of his performance in the group stages.
David Villa – the top scorer this EC – was the firm winner of the central striker position.
Guus Hiddink is the obvious choice (when you’re Dutch) and maybe Aragones and Van Basten can assist him. Aragones specifically asked this team not to chuck him in the air when they would win (against who exactly??). Marco van Basten backed the Spanish coach and suggested to throw Hiddink as high as they possibly could…

i have a atupid questions, what is AD:)?
Posted from
United States

From the look of the content they provide, my guess will have to be that it is the Dutch abreviation for Attention Deficit Disorder
Joking aside, I believe it is a Dutch newspaper.

@finnster , hahahahahahhaha, i think the oranje players had AD against russia, this is the only reason to play that bad!!!!

Continuing the future oranje discussion…
This would be my 2010 lineup:
—————-stekelenburg—————–
Zuiverloon – heitenga – engelaar – Emanuelson
——————de jong——————–
Robben — v.d vaart — sneijder — drenthe
—————-van persie——————-
Thoughts?

Tim , Awful Lineup!Where is Huntelaar?

The AD is the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (general daily newspaper). They have the best sports section and website and I borrow a lot of their stuff. This blog wouldn’t be half as good as it is (and it is good!!) without the AD.
I like these line ups. I am for trying Engelaar as center back and for using Robin as center striker. Rather not Drenthe yet. Haven’t seen him play consistent at top level, like I have Afellay. De Jong could be good right back too and Drenthe could move to holding position as well.

I like the Ad selection. But I pick Aragones because he won the tournament. He beat the best: Italy, Russia and Germany and if Spain had played Portugal or Holland they would have won anyway. I think Portugal and Holland have a better team than Spain but Spain was more prepared in this tournament and had the right mentality to win it. They fully deserve it and they showed that with technical players you have an advantage vs your rivals.
They have short players but they are very technical and fast with and without the ball and that is what counts in football. Congratulations to España.

@jan;

Haha
… Nah, too long ago… She couldn’t care less…

“Edwin Van der Sar was no brainer on goal”???Well we must admit Iker Casillas could have been the goalkeeper of the tournament if not the player of the tournament. He was rock solid, mistake free, and against Italy in the PKs he was the savior, and although having played more games he only conceded very few. I think Van der Sar could have done similarly had he have an outstanding defense. But to let three goals in your net in a game, regardless of circumstances, makes the keen observer pick Casillas over Van der Sar. That said, I love Van der Sar and I thank him for his heroic and exemplary service to the Oranje!!! It’s an indisputable fact that he is one of the top 10 goal keepers of the last two decades.

I read that Sneijder is being nominated as player of the tournament.
Well it is qualified that the winner usually comes from the Winning team.
Good ole Wes says he would trade the honourable mention or the award for a trip through the canals of Amsterdam with his team mates.
At the WC most of these guys will be 25-28 which is an ideal age for football. But then wasn’t Arnold Muhren ( he of the gifted left foot) 37 when he played in the final ?

He was
. So maybe we’ll see:
Sar
Ooijer Bouma Mathijsen Gio
Van Bommel Engelaar
Van der Vaart Sneijder Robben
Van Nistelrooy
in the Wc2010

@Van Basten: The AD readers are all Dutch and Dutch fans and with Sar playing a pretty good tournament and having signed off, to me it was logical that the fans picked him. Objectively, you’re right of course…

@ tim
—————-stekelenburg—————–
Zuiverloon – heitenga – Vlaar – Emanuelson/drenthe
——————de jong——————–
Robben — van persie — sneijder — Babel
—————-Huntelaar——————-
much better that way. van persie is a Supporting striker not a target man. engelaar in defense you must be mad.

@ Michel-Olivier
Not sure about youre defence, you cant really say how Vlaar is going to develop, i’d say Boulahrouz-Heitinga would be a hell of a central defence, But who knows with talents like Vlaar, Donk and Marcellis,
Emanuelson and Drenthe might not be the best choice for the WC, Emanuelson still lacks real defensive quality, altough he could be worldclass by 2010, and Drenthe still feels better as a left wing attacker.
Perhaps Bouma or De Cler on leftback if Emanuelson/Drenthe or even Pieters haven’t (yet) developed enough by then.

@ Alex
2 years is enough to develop. they just need experience in the senior squad.
Emanuelson, Drenthe, and Zuiverloon are ready. Pieters and Marcellis need another year.

Jan’s team is too old and slow, Tim’s team is just not good enough, Michael-Oliver’s team is too untested and speculative. How about this team?
VDS (his best chance ever will be with this young veteran team)
Boulah Heitinga Ooijer Emmanuleson (Drenthe)
DeJong
Babel Sneijder Van Der vaart Robben
Huntelaar
Not in love with that back 4 but obvioulsy that’s the hard part when making out these lineups. Would love to move Boulah and ooijer out, but for who? Zuiverloon completely untested, Donk, Marcellis have shown great promise, but that’s about it so far. De Cler? Not really. Mathijsen is invisible, Gio will be too old….

I hate a lone striker system. Goals never come in handy. Always difficult to score unless you have a very effective and productive midfield like Spain. Italy has a lone striker Luca Toni, and although the best scorer in Bayern Munchen, he had no goals in the EC. Fernando Torres was only able to produce two goals in the EC. I rather have two srikers for the new Dutch team with Huntelaar and Van Persie. By the way, how come all the proposed lineups have no Dirk Kuyt?He is so underestimated, yet he he is selfless and the hardest working man. Most of the 33 goals of Torres at Liverpool came from Kuyt. Also in the game against Italy he had 2 assists. So don’t write him off yet. But our weakness is still the defense, we need to get those guys up to speed, and have a backline similar to that of the Azurri. Our guys are so young and inexperienced, and I am afraid that WC2010 will be the same old same story.

Oranje starting lineup in 2010, 4-1-3-2.
Stek
Heitinga-Donk-Marcellis-Pieters
De Jong
Afellay/Babel – Sneijder – vdVaart
vPersie — Huntelaar
Pieters and Marcellis will/should get their debuts soon, and hopefully ready in 2 years. Not sure about Donk, depends on if he gets playing times. The rests are picked out automatically.
