Star: Adrian Mutu
Mutu is captain, star and top goalscorer. So, unarming him means a lot. But who thinks the 29 year old striker isn’t hungry for more is wrong. The former Chelsea players wants to show the world that not Gheorghi Hagi but Adrian Mutu is the best Romanian player ever. Hagi, monikered the Maradona of the Carpats (?) led Romania to the quarter finals of the WC1994. He played 125 internationals games and wore the Barcelona jersey. Mutu isn’t there yet, but he is quickly keeping up. If Mutu can lead his team past Italy, France and Holland, he surely is a big player. Mutu is no average Joe. He is intelligent, loves math, prefers theater over dvd’s and loves good food and fine wine. Still, Mutu’s heart wins regularly against Mutu’s brain. He likes a party and tried to face the pressure of being famous with the use of some white powder. He was kicked out of Chelsea because of his coke use (no, not the drink) and ended up in the same rehab clinic where Tony Adams used to come. Juve gave Mutu a new lease on life, but he really got back at the top at Fiorentina.

He scored 17 goals this season in the Serie A. Dennis Bergkamp knows how tough that is. The Romanian national team benefits from Mutu’s resurrection. His six goals in the qualifications helped the Romanians to finish first, with the Dutch team as runners up. Oranje, France and Italy are warned. But…whoever can stop Mutu can stop Romania…

Haha, nice picture/caption Jan!
Mutu is definitely a good player and the danger man though.

Chivu’s the captain, Hagi was the Marradona of the Carpathians.

Indeed Mutu is a very important player for Romania, but he isn’t the only threat. Sometimes he tries to do all by himself , but when he’s a team palyer, he is very useful. In our press it is often said that our team’s strength comes from the team spirit, but for that we’ll have to wait and see.

Well, I am Romanian, but I like all the teams in this group, for different reasons. France ,because of a silly bet in ‘98 ,about France winning the WC, Italy because of their tactical planning, and Neatherlands (I feel I am not Dutch enough to use “Oranje”). And I also believe that anything can happen in this group, any team can trample the opposition, or finish EURO without any points. I believe it is exaggerated to make the progression out of the group as an objective ,as it is for Romania, because it puts too much pressure on the player’s shoulders. But again, Piturca is an excellent tactician, and I expect Romania to grab at least 1 or 2 points.
