Matchday…eh…: what we learned…

June 20th, 2008 | By: Jan | 23 Comments »

Sorry guys, it’s 5.30 am and Croatia - Turkey is still on. Watching football at this time is only fun when watching quality play…

Turkish goalie Rustu doesn’t seem the business for 80 minutes, only to make three good saves in the last ten minutes of regular playing time.

I miss our Orange Angel. I haven’t seen new pics of her and that is an outrage!

And then in the last two minutes, Rustu makes a huge mistake and Croatia scores the 1-0. The game is over. Or…is it…?

Turkey likes to score late. Maybe they should just cancel the first half when Turkey plays.

And, in the last seconds, they do it again. And the assist is even by Rustu, when you look at it creatively: 1-1!

That Modric… he does look like JC doesn’t he? Number 14, the hair, the vision, the nose, the lean body, the speed… He moves to Tottenham Hotspur.

Croatian left full back Prasnic won’t be playing in Heerenveen much longer, I tell ya.

It’s Thanksgivings day in the semis for Germany: they get Turkey!

Villian Rustu becomes the hero.

Turkey reaches the semi finals, and they only enjoyed a lead in a match for two minutes…

Germany is laughing, what with Turkey’s injuries and suspensions.

Joachim Low: I told you Croatia didn’t impress me!

MvB should show Turkey’s 2 matches tape to the squad.
Play until the whistle is blown.

I did not know they have Thanksgiving in Australia…or even Europe for that matter. Thanksgiving is an American only tradition first celebrated by the Plymouth Plantation in 1621. Canadians, too, celebrate Thanksgiving. But Canadaians are always copycats!
Go Turkiye!

It’s so funny, the Greek won in 2004 and Turkey (their rivals) said before this one: we can do that too :-)

I do hope they beat Germany. Oranje - Turkey will be a massive match for Holland (with all the Turkish fans in Holland…)

Porchetta, that Angel is not me and I don’t know her either… Unfortunately. She is the mascot of the Dutch fans. Check out the posts this month and you’ll find more pics and a background story on her.

And yes, Jan is a girls name in English, but this Jan is Dutch and has hair on his chest!

Germany is now going to breeze into the finals because of all the injuries and suspensions on Turkey’s side.

I just hope Oranje isn’t going to run out of steam if they get to the finals because of all the massive battles still ahead of us, including Russia (which I find slightly more dangerous than for example Spain at the moment) and probably Italy again.

If we get passed Russia, I just hope we get a very good referee against Italy who doesn’t allow a lot of pushing and pulling in the penalty area, and doesn’t fall for fake dives, or other sneaky tricks the Italians always like to use, like the wall jumping slowly forward during free kicks so the referee doesn’t notice that suddenly they are standing only at 5 or 6m from the free kick spot (still saw them doing it in 2006).

^ I hope that too. I prefer the Italians to be knocked out in the quarters though (crosses fingers). I mean, what if Materazzi pulls a Zidane on Bouhlarouz in the semi’s, it’d be one ugly match.. :D

oh Porch, cant get enough of the attention can you?? please go away (esp. since youre not a real european anyway!! haha)
all these americans and canadians have made far more intelligent comments than you have…Your Royal Highness

as for the Turk, Jan, better hope the final wont be Turkey - Holland cause it will be riots on the streets…already a turkish man has been killed in Breda prob. cause of a football related incident….i predict heavy rioting in Germany with their large turkish population

again; how come the turks play at the European Champ.? since theyre not part of Europe (and i hope never will be)

How come a lot of comments are getting nastier and less football related?
In response to the Turkey win over Croatia: Hooray! Croatia didn’t show anything of its group stage form and Turkey did; Scoring at the very very last moment, they now are the Germans of Asia Minor…Maybe the Germans now will play like the Dutch of the East and we will have another crazy tournament on our hands! Don’t think Turkey stands a chance with all their injuries and suspensions though..but if the miracle happens and Oranje also reaches the final a lot of friendships will become threatened sround me as in Groningen where I live Turks and Dutch people get along just fine! Everybody have a good weekend and enjoy 2 of the best games of the tournament!

I think Turkey and Holland has made this tournament the best tournament I’ve seen in years. Turkey has also proved something that was in my head for a while now, football (or any other sport) and in particular scoring is more about emotion than skill and energies that are created by the crowd.

You can just see players flare up and start playing phenomenal football, agressive and fanaticly/eagerly/energiticly start chasing the ball and trying things when things start happening in the game and the crowd reacts.

Suddenly a game springs alive like there’s a sudden burst of energy released into the players that make them do extra-ordinary things.

Or it’s all just one hell of a coincidence!

I meant to say that scoring is more about emotion and energies thar are creates by the crowd than skill alone.

I kinda got that sentence mixed up.

@goose;

you are absolutely correct. Turkey should not even be in the EC08. If it were not for the Norwegian goalkeeper (in two games), they would not be there. Massive gifts, one goal on a backpass between his legs and another Peter Cech style.

In any event, for a country who’s main contribution to the world society is giving us kebabs, they surely must have run out of luck by now. I trust the Krauts will take care of business and put an end to this fluke run.

Turkey is simply rubbish, and luck will only take you so far. Lazy bastards too.

Hehe, you know, we the Dutch may have our killer counters, but I think Turkey has won the “We can kick you in the balls harder” award. Those are pretty insane wins. However, I’m pretty sure their luck will run out against Germany.

goose: the EU and Europe are two different things. If you don’t like to see them become members of the EU, then that doesn’t mean you have to exclude them from the UEFA etc.

i dont know about other matches but after i watch Russia humilating Dutch, i learnt that TOTAL FOOTBALL was just a myth..infact the first two wins over Italia and France were counter attacking Football not Total football..

I don’t think we on this blog or anyone in the Orange camp ever used the term Total Football. That’s old journalists longing for the days of yore…

Russia played total football and proved it’s not a myth.

I am happy this conclusion of yours makes you happy. It truly is a crucial conclusion in the shape of things. Well done! You can go now :-)
