Matchday 7 (?)… Why are we drunk?

Marco: “Oranje angel, come to Marcoooo…..”

I mean, what have we learned of course. Was a typo. Sorry.

Before we start: the most important lesson is… WE HAVE WITNESSED A HISTORIC FOOTBALL MATCH.

All you guys out there… Talking about JC in WC1974, San Marco in 1988, Bergkamp in 1998, Kluivert in 2000… This was one of those matches. People will talk about this tournament, Oranje, the goals, the fans, this blog for years to come. Fathers will tell their kids. They will tell their kids (and grandpa was there! Well, not in the stadium, but on the blog!! (Kids: Jan’s blog??? Wow…)).

But really people. This was breathtaking. Heroic. Hitchcock couldn’t have written this scenario.

WOW.

I am still coming to my senses.

The Italy match was special, but this one was even better. Why? Because in the first half, we looked shaky. Because France came back 2-1 only for Robben to score 3-1 thirty seconds later. The heroism of injured icons Robben and Robin coming on to set things straight. Or Boulah, swept aside by Chelsea… Ooijer, ridiculed in the EPL. And last but not least, Marco van Basten. Criticized, crucified almost… He was arrogant, shallow, a bad people manager, he only enlisted his buddies, he backstabbed JC, blablabla… I am telling you, France and Italy would sign him today! Even with the haircut. (I remember betting with Goose that if Holland would beat France and Italy, Goose would shave his head Marco-style… YEAH!!).

Just wanted to let you know. Just take a moment. Take a deep breath. And repeat: “I witnessed a historic match. Stuff of legends. Every goal a beauty. The names of Robben, Sneijder, Van Persie, van der Sar and even De Jong and Engelaar will be whispered for decades to come…

So, that was lesson number 1. We were there. We saw it when it happened. Where ever we were (Japan, Australia, Holland, America, France, Singapore, China, Mexico, Kathmandu…), we have this eternal connection, with which (editor’s note: Get on with it dude!!)

2. The off side interpretation can be a bastard when you’re an Italy fan.

3. Mutu wanted to de-throne Hagi as the best Romanian ever… Not yet, Adrian…

4. Coupet didn’t want to break his nails.

5. Robin and Robben will never be in the starting line up if they keep coming on in the second half like this.

6. Real Madrid, Juve, Man United, Barca and all the other big teams are not longer interested in Engelaar.

7. Buffon is a bit of a buffoon but he sure can stop a penalty.

8. The Orange Angel deserves a full time position within the Oranje staff.

9. Four more matches to go…

10. Holland is going berserk.

matchday 7; my head hurts from all the alcohol, we hade a great party yesterday, they actually needed to close our city centre because the bars became too crowded and thing got a little out of hand

im still recovering from last night…what a game!! the Gods have been with us these last 2 games, we scored at the right times; just when the opponents feel they still have something to win

just great that after watching so many shit games during qualification, after writing 1000s of angry words on this blog, things just seem to work out

nobody here in Holland expected this..we are all so proud and so should all you Holland fans on this blog..these are magical times for us fans

but; we shouldnt forget that 1. we havent won anything yet 2. we were under some serious pressure during parts of the game, we werent as strong as v Italy..the most importent thing now is to stay grounded and realistic

again congrets on vBasten with his GREAT substitutions

WIJ HOUDEN VAN ORANJE!!!!!!!!!

The most encouraging thing that I’ve observed in these 2 games is that the team has gelled really well, they r playing like a team hungry for success. It is important to take each game at a time.To me even the Romania game is important,it is imperative that we win to keep the spirits high.Let the reserve guys a go,give the senior players rest.Keep focused. This time the Dutch flag will fly higher than others. No ego problems,no major injuries(sorry Ryan),and luck is with us.I feel we will do it guys.

Yesterday, Netherland football team beat France 4-1. I have seen Robben scored one goal. This was a beautiful goal. I love all Netherland team. On 18 Jun 2008, Netherland will play against Romania. I wish Netherland will beat Romania and go to the semi-final and the final.

Is it true that it might be better for the Netherlands to lose against Romania so they can potentially avoid Italy or France again? I never really thought about it that way. I just read this possibility on a football forum.

I’m a historic viewer even when I only got to watch the replay of the game at midnight in Northern Virginia?? THIS RULES!!!!!!!!!!

Oranje = my heroes

I love how we are (likely) playing second string vs Romania…I really do love Marco van Basten…

And as a Fiorentina fan (not quite ‘fan’ I suppose but I like them more than I like all the other Italian teams), I happen to think Mutu is the best Romanian ever already…

Oh and did I mention this stuff was in my dreams last night beginning at 1:22 am??…yeah well it was, oranje everywhere man…

@Julien; thats NEVER gonna happen..you cant loose a match on purpose

vBasten will rest some players for sure but he also doenst want to break the flow we are in at the moment

i just hope Spain will win today (theyre 1-0 up at the moment, Torres) so our next game will be either Sweden or Russia (dont think, and hope that Greece will play a part)

@anonymous; Hagi is far better than Mutu

spain has just won against Sweden thanks to an injury time winner by David Villa. This guy is the top scorer in the tournament now! Most likely Sweden would be the QF opponent.

Goose is right in mentioning that we would not lose to romania on purpose just to knock Italy and France out. Not only is this unethial, it might also backfire. There have been several instances in other sports where a team purposefully ost a match and then got beaten again by the same team in the knockout stages.

never seen Hagi play, goose, so I’m just a biased and shameless ignoramus when it comes to Romania. I’m a Mutu fan, what can I say? :)

Hiddink’s Russia will make it, mark my words. Oranje – Russia in the QF.

Italy or France will be beaten in the QF’s by Spain.

Which didn’t look so hot, by the way

Don’t discount Italy or France to reach the semi-finals if one of them plays Spain. Spain hasn’t really been tested yet, both France and Italy have played emotional matches fighting very hard. They will be more ready at the start of the game than Spain because they are emotionally more into the tournament and will start more eager and fanatic.

And they definitely didn’t play all that bad, they just couldn’t play their own game which is defense-counter.

Kind of funny actually, the Dutch team has forced all the defensive orientated teams in this poule to abandon their own playing style and start playing our football, offensive. And then we punished them at their own game :) Only with more style, class and guts, putting in a forward for a defensive midfielder, Robben – Engelaar, and putting in a more offensive orientated forward for a defensive orientated forward, vPersie – Kuyt, and all that while we are AHEAD 1-0 and under heavy pressure, if that isn’t class worthy of a champion I don’t know what is.

Even Romania is forced to play offensive now, cause a draw is too risky for them (if France or Italy wins they are out).

Prabal, who cares about topscorers man? We just let everyone score a goal, far more entertaining. :D
