Match day 10: what have we learned?

June 16th, 2008 | By: Jan | 21 Comments »

Joachim Low: I am not impressed with those Spanish referees…

Ballack can hit a ball!

Rafael and Sylvie spent the night together after the French game and didn’t sleep much. It’s true!!
She said so. Honestly!

Don Leo looks good with his grey hair in the technical area. That’s basically all he does… Looking good.
Poland is going home.

Spanish referee: I am not impressed with [ editor: give it a rest, Jan!]

This is the time to go out and eat in a Romanian restaurant. For free!

Italy and France are stressed. And are we worrying about meeting one of them again in the semis??? How will they feel about it?

Edgar Davids: All those big ego’s in the 1998 squad. Yechh!

Real Madrid, Juve, Man United, Arsenal and AC Milan want to sign German striker Gomez!
As a central defender…

Johan Cruyff: Van Basten complained about the questions of sports-reporters? He should ask the questions himself! He knows enough about football and the media to do their job for them.

Watching Croatia, Poland, Germany and Austria at 4.30 am is not as much fun as watching Oranje tear up huge French and Italian ego’s.

Jan, thank you so very much for making this Euro championship tournament even better and more enjoyable because of your excellent and informative blogs. You have out-done yourself with both the quality and quantity of these items, adding depth and entertainment to what, for Dutch fans, can only be called, so far, a dream come true that we never dared to dream. Met Hartelijk Bedankt!(sorry again for the poor spelling)

OK Jan i will fill u up with the details… :)

i went to Bern last monday to watch the game against Italy. the ticket was quite expensive but completely worth it!!!

just as i got of the train i could hear people singing and a band playing in the station. the party had already started 9 hours before the game :)
everybody was dressed up crazy and the whole town was covered in orange. u could hardly see an italian fan. i went to the fan zone (where the big screens where placed) and there was the biggest party of all. i read in the local newspapers that there were 100.000 dutch fans that day in the city.
after the game a big party was set up in the fan zone. no hooligans, no fighting even though i spotted a couple of italians in that place.

i traveled to salzburg (for the greece game – since i am cypriot) and vienna for the next few days.On friday, due to train delays i didn’t make it to go to bern for the game against france so i ended up in zurich. i didn’t have a ticket for this game but i am sure that the atmosphere in the fan zone in bern would be even better to the one in the stadium. i read that 150.000 were in the city that day – most of them dutch.

anyway i ended up watching the game in the fanzone in zurich surrounded by italian and french fans. bit scary being the only guy wearing the orange shirt and shouting on every possible occasion but i survived :)
ok, i wasn’t the only one but i wouldn’t say that u could find a dutch supporter in the city easily. most of them were in bern – i should have been there as well :(

that’s it. i have been waiting for this game against italy since i was 8 and i was watching the euro92; loosing to that penalty shoot-out against denmark :) it was about time… :)

Jan I disagree that Holland will lose tonight :)

OK forget our efence, they have been criticised by so many yet have the best record at the tournament, however if you have a midfield and attack like this

de Zeeuw – Engelaar
Affelay -vPersie – Robben
Huntelaar

I dont care whats behind them – this has goals written all over them !

Thanks for your kind words, again, and don’t forget: it’s the chicken and the egg. It’s your responses and enthusiasm that keeps me going! Do birds sing in the woods when no one is listening? I don’t know. I do know that – for me being in Australia, without my Dutch friends at home – this is a great way to share the fun and excitement! I’ll keep it up, if you do too :-)

Portugal ? Yes that was my first thought.
Now I am thinking wouldn’t it be great if it was Germany in a final again ?
It could happen :)

I just read a report that there will be 9 changes.
Sar will stay (as Captain) as will Engelaar.
The rest will be rested……
Its basically the team we all thought of :)

@ferenc; he man; you ok?
yes, i think this will be the line up, but im not sure ofcourse..i dont think vBasten wanna change too much and make it a totally different team, he wants to stay ‘in the flow’..my guess is he just ask Ruud “do you wanna play?” and my guess is ruud said “yes please”…
but will see in a couple of hours, great times eh ferenc, we should enjoy it while it lasts..
