European press: Orange puts vitamin into the EC!

June 10th, 2008 | By: Jan | 13 Comments »

Europe speaks with respect about the performance of Marco van Basten and his players. “The fans at last had a match they could enjoy. And not coincidentally, it was Holland that played the main part.”

The BBC does say that both teams finally gave the tournament life. “We had a lame start of the tournament and when France Romania ended in a goalless draw it was about time we wanted to sit on the edge of our chairs.”

“Holland was lethal in the turnaround, but the Italians showed some impressive football as well. But deservedly, Oranje won.

According to the BBC, Oranje played majestic and is one of the main candidates for the title.

The German sportspaper Kicker mentions the swift turnaround attacks of Oranje. “The Dutch swept the Azurri off the pitch with quick and smart positioning play.”

“Despite the fact that known bombers like Ryan Babel, Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie are absent, Van Basten could present a magnificent forward line with Van der Vaart, Van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt.”

L’Equipe thought Oranje was truly impressive. “Led by Madrid duo Van Gol - Sneijder Oranje defeated the Italians with a deserved 3-0.”

Sneijder and Van der Vaart were often mentioned in one sentence. “These two are world class on the basis of the skills.”

In a Spanish fan-forum punters were impressed with the finesse with which the architect of the world champions, Pirlo, was played. “Holland could have scored three more. A fat A+ for the Dutch!”

Lastly, the Gazetta dello Sport, the pink sports bible: “The Darkest Night. The Orange have given Italian football a lesson and a spanking that won’t be forgotten sometime soon.”

The Dutch newspapers couldn’t find words to describe the victory of Holland. A dreamstart, most editors decided to use. Trouw: “Oranje demolishes world champions. A remarkable resurrection of the Dutch team.”

The AD shouts: “That’s how a champion plays. This is how you win the title! A perfect game.”

De Volkskrant writes: So we can win against Italy after all.” De Telegraaf is more populistic: “Oranje crushes Italy.” And “Oranje Bellissimo!”

The Guardian found a nice play on words: “Rude Awakening for Italy”.

The Daily Telegraph couldn’t find their FIFA rulebook and shouted: “Ruud was so far off side, he was almost in Austria!”

And La Stampa finally: “Is this Italy World Champion?”

Match Holland - Italy.
This Match EndScore is to good to be true !
People did Black Magic ( VOODOO ) on ITALY, because they are jealous that Italy is World Champion.
Captain Cannavaro get injured and cannot play, also by Black Magic.
And the Referree was very generous to Holland, also because of Sneijders birthday, so he gave them this match as a present, also by giving Italy the yellow cards instead of Holland.
This is the first time in history that Holland got this onrealistic miracles score of 3-0 against Italy.
So this miracle is definitely the cause of Black Magic !
I wish the Italy team & Cannavaro very goodluck, and may God Bless them all to become the winner of this UEFA EURO 2008 !

suddenly we are one of the favorites for the title in all the papers you read. I hate it. The underdog role suited us well.

SUPPORTER - enough with this spam, you posted the same thing in the other entry.

ejb: I agree, we don’t have to think about the title. Our humility yesterday defeated arrogance, we have to keep on being humble.

Jan, I bought the Corriere dello Sport this morning (Roman Sports Newspaper), what pleasure I had in reading those articles.
First time they speak highly of van der Sar and what comments concerning Engelaar, Sneijder and van Bronkhorst.

After watching much of the game again I was really impressed by the D - particularly the Cannibal. How many times when there was a threat did Khalid sweep the ball away. How many times did he do it cleanly?

Gio too. not only did he score - he was great in cutting down the angles and getting on his man.

Van De Sar. Wow - after Khalid got subbed (probably had to since he’s coming off an injury) two fantastic saves.

Kuijt got beaten defensively a few times. But then I realized - he had been on the other side of the field a second ago. With two assists in the end - and tireless back and forth running. Great teaming with Van N.

And notice that two of the goals were on rapid counter-attacks. Built slowly most of the time, but Nederland came out running. Very happy that possession was 50% - 50%. Oranje attacked to score, not just to dominate possession.

Also liked the subs. Despite the lead Van Baasten pulled his tired guys out and got in fresh legs in the attack. Van P showed some flashes - but clearly needs to get in sync.

Schneider was unbelievable - funny that he’s wearing number 10 now, not van de Vaart.

Brilliant performance from the Dutch team. It’s not like Italy even played that badly. They just got turned over completely by the Dutch. Van Bronckhorst was amazing.

Hopefully they can keep up this level of performance throughout the tournament.

You clearly out played us, but do not get fooled Donadoni put out the worst lineup i have ever seen and this is why we were beatin 3-0… not making any excuses i know you guys took it to us but I am just bieng honest in saying that the right line up out there
(ex. Zambrotta-Chillineli-Barzagli-Grosso
Acquilani-Pirlo-De Rossi
Del Piero-Toni-Cassano) and this would have been a much different game. Again no excuses but Donadoni blew this one big time, all Italians were thinking this from the start of the game honestly, especially when we see no De Rossi out there.

Good Luck next round, beat France for us so we can go thru as well and meet again..

I agree Stasio… I could only sit relaxed after the third goal. I still felt that if Italy scored, the match would be wide open. At times Italy played well and if the little moments that make up football panned out differently, who knows…? But Donadoni is responsible for not playing De Rossi and I do feel the line up let Ital down…

Oh dear, my head hurts today. For all the right reasons. Have not had such a hangover since I broke into my fathers liquor cabinet on new years eve as a 16 year old. Very long time ago.

All I can say is watching this game in New York was priceless. I sat in a pub (my regular Irish pub) next to a bunch of Italians who run a pizzeria around the corner and then a bunch of Dutch tourists came in (from Rotterdam, but that’s OK), felt less lonely after that. Massive atmosphere, place was packed, the Italians got really quiet really quickly and us Oranje fans got loud, up on the table, singing dancing. Dirty old me even got a chance to grab a nice pair of Dutch titties after Sneijder scored. Even more Priceless!!

I love being an Oranje fan. To all you Dutch, thank you so much for producing these magnificent artists. Now I know how your tiny country could produce all these great masters, Rembrandt, VanGogh, Vermeer etc. You are still doing it, only now they all play soccer!!

I had a great time last night. In a large and great public viewing community in Karlsruhe/Germany with many nationalities, all had a wonderful time, including the Italians. All agreed that the game showed why football has so many fans. Thank you Holland, thank you Italy too.

After the boring France-Romania game I wish that Italy will proceed along with the Netherlands.

What a great enertainment that game was. After all, football is about entertainment.

@Nelson

try Peter Dillons on the corner of 40th street and Lex Ave. Shows all games, shows all Prem games during season too. Also if you are a Portugal supporter, the guy that runs it is a die hard Man U fan and has two big Man U flags swinging outside. Me being a Liverpool fan find that somewhat difficult to deal with, but we get along just fine at the end of the day. He also has 9 big plasma screens in there, so you will be hard pressed not to find a good spot to watch it. It can get crowded, but by and large, my favourite NY spot to watch games.
