It bodes well for Oranje that Van Marwijk seems a man capable of winning in cup competitions, and has proved that again. Hopefully he can get us through the qualifying too!

(Also Jan, I love your translations! “I was pissed off when I heard it at first. I had been working my arse off for this match.” Haha! Surely a little more colourful language than any footie player would use?)

I couldn’t watch it here in Oz. Let’s say first off that it’s not a consolation prize (although I admit it does feel like one) but in all fairness, there’s only two prizes to be won: the title and this cup.

A “ticket to CL qualifications” can’t be seen as a prize, more a potentially lucrative deal. But the Dutch cup lost some of it’s glory due to all the shenanigans in the last decades: different set ups, different dates, different venues for the finals etc etc.

But formally: PSV won the title, Feyenoord the cup and Ajax and AZ (to name two) didn’t win anything.

As for the game: I’d expected Roda to come into this game with foam on the lips. Feyenoord had to win this, all the pressure was one them, while they’re not in great form. So, the underdog should fight their arses off and put even more pressure on Feyenoord. Atteveld, Roda’s trainer, was like that as a player and I expected more venom from Roda. I actually thought Feyenoord would lose this game. As in “choking”.

I am glad they won, don’t get me wrong, but it seems like a constellation prize after there poor showing down the stretch of the season.
