Dutch Cup Final: Feyenoord delivers
Last night, Feyenoord placed a crown on their disappointing season. That Club from Rotterdam ended the competition on the sixth spot, missing the CL qualifications, but won a real prize in the National Cup, winning 2-0 against Roda JC. This is the eleventh time in history that Feyenoord grabs this cup.
Feyenoord lost the finals in 2003, against FC Utrecht, also with Van Marwijk at the helm.
Roda JC played six finals and won it twice.
Feyenoord started well in a packed De Kuip. Denny Landzaat scored after 8 minutes on a Bruins’ cross. The former Ajax, AZ and Wigan player slided the ball behind keeper Castro. In the 35th minute Jonathan De Guzman ended a sweet combination with a Castro nutmeg: 2-0.
Roda couldn’t get back into the game, although they did claim two penalties (which they didn’t get).
Bert van Marwijk: “I’m proud of the team. When you play “must-win” matches. the pressure is enormous but they did it perfectly. Scoring a quick goal and securing the win mid first half, this made for a great match. I am happy that we put a positive finish on this somewhat disappointing season. We started well, and then we got sand in the engine. We missed the play offs on one match point. And I can tell you about 6 games at least where we should have secured that point. But, this is great. A real prize, the players and the fans deserve this.”
Feyenoord will show the cup to the fans on Monday, on the famous Coolsinger City Hall balcony.
Roy Makaay worked hard to get fit for the finals, but was benched by Van Marwijk. The former Bayern Munich striker: “I was pissed off when I heard it at first. I had been working my arse off for this match. But I can understand the coach’s decision. And now I am just happy. I also think Michael Mols deserved this end to his career, so…all’s good.”
The fans were ecstatic. Crying grown men on the stands, singing: “And they don’t have anything in Amsterdam!”… Right….

I thought this was a pretty boring game, except for the first couple of minutes.

I am glad they won, don’t get me wrong, but it seems like a constellation prize after there poor showing down the stretch of the season.

I couldn’t watch it here in Oz. Let’s say first off that it’s not a consolation prize (although I admit it does feel like one) but in all fairness, there’s only two prizes to be won: the title and this cup.
A “ticket to CL qualifications” can’t be seen as a prize, more a potentially lucrative deal. But the Dutch cup lost some of it’s glory due to all the shenanigans in the last decades: different set ups, different dates, different venues for the finals etc etc.
But formally: PSV won the title, Feyenoord the cup and Ajax and AZ (to name two) didn’t win anything.
As for the game: I’d expected Roda to come into this game with foam on the lips. Feyenoord had to win this, all the pressure was one them, while they’re not in great form. So, the underdog should fight their arses off and put even more pressure on Feyenoord. Atteveld, Roda’s trainer, was like that as a player and I expected more venom from Roda. I actually thought Feyenoord would lose this game. As in “choking”.

It bodes well for Oranje that Van Marwijk seems a man capable of winning in cup competitions, and has proved that again. Hopefully he can get us through the qualifying too!
(Also Jan, I love your translations! “I was pissed off when I heard it at first. I had been working my arse off for this match.” Haha! Surely a little more colourful language than any footie player would use?)

Yeah, I do use some freedom in my translations sometimes
