Where are they now? Kees van Wonderen
Kees van Wonderen with legendary coach Wiel Coerver
Kees van Wonderen was famous as a player when he was 10 years old. He was one of the kids used in master coach Wiel Coerver’s Technique Videos. The lean and little talent couldn’t make the expected jump to the big clubs due to his physique. When he [...]
Mark van Bommel: Oranje is well balanced
Mark van Bommel is positive about the progress of Oranje. It’s so good, that he doesn’t want to talk about who is the leader in the team. “No one claims leadership, which is the strength of this group.”
“I think we’re very well balanced. You can tell exactly what we want to achieve. Just look how [...]
Dutch School rules in Australia
Dutch club football may not amount to much anymore in international football, but players and coaches with a Dutch passport are still highly in demand. Success guaranteed.
In Australia, they know this already. In a recent daily article, Dutch football is named the most successful of the last 40 years. And with Pim Verbeek and Henk [...]

Team manager Van Marwijk added Eljero Elia to the Oranje selection for the Iceland and Norway games.
The 22 year old former Ajax youth player – selected as talent of the year, will make his debut in the national pride.

Van Marwijk wants to keep Oranje fit
Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk invited thirteen players for three extra trainings sessions with Oranje. It’s mainly to keep Eredivisie players fit for the two upcoming internationals against Iceland and Norway, early June.
The last competition round is on May 10 and players that won’t have to play playoffs are allowed to take an early holiday. Van [...]
Post-game comments…
Bert van Marwijk: “Well, now it’s safe to say that if we don’t make it to the WC, I will resign…”
“But seriously,” he went on, “we knew this could be a tight match. They’re very good in the limited spaces and are a dangerous counter-team, so we needed to play smart, with confidence and with [...]
Review Nederland – Macedonia 4-0
Something went wrong after the game when I wanted to post this. Sorry lads!
It’s early in the morning in Oz and I’m ready to watch our lads take on Macedonia live!
Well, live for me . Dodged the news flashes and comments, so all I know now is, we’re in for a grand match…
Macedonia coach [...]
Some thoughts on Oranje…
Robin scores the 2-0…
How this team has grown… And I’m not referring to the victory over Scotland per se. I mean, they weren’t that good, were they?
But in general. We’ve seen San Marco qualify easily for two major tournaments. San Marco survived two Groups of Death ™. And got ousted after 1) a dreadful one [...]
Huntelaar: silences criticasters with goals…
And yet again, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar silences his criticasters the only way he can: by scoring goals, this time in the Real Madrid jersey. And even for Oranje, some people think he’s not good enough. “Ah well, I don’t want to focus on the negative…”, the Hunter says.
And what a sight it must have been. Huntelaar [...]
Van Marwijk: Handling disappointment is key towards Gold
Bert lectures, the group listens…
Never before was there an Oranje team manager with so many fit internationals before two crucial qualification games.
So, this week Bert van Marwijk really strongly requests a high level of acceptance from his players. “We will never win the World Cup if certain players won’t be able to accept to be [...]
Podcast: World Cup 2010 Group B Preview. "You hear that, Mr. Anderson?"
World Cup previews. They can be a bit dull and not particularly helfpul when it comes to predicting who will qualify from each group. One reason for this is that they focus too much on things like players and not enough on the really good things. Like quality of national [read more]
FIFA Has $1 Billion in Reserve Funds, But Still Doesn't Appreciate Clever Advertising
Two bits of news today. Read them both, and then decide for yourself whether the two are related.
The first story is that FIFA made a profit of $196 million in 2009, and now has a reserve cash fund of more than $1 billion. One billion dollars in the vault. Which makes FIFA sound a little like a Bond villain.
The second story is that FIFA have come down hard on South African budget airline kulula.com for what FIFA calls "ambush marketing". Basically, Kulula isn't an official World Cup sponsor, and as such is not allowed to suggest otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. However, Kulula - famous for its slightly left-field advertising campaigns - recently ran an ad in the South African Sunday Times newspaper on February 28th stating the airline was the "Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What". The World Cup 2010 DJ Playlist (Musical Lineup)
(That kid immediately gets some sort of WCB Order of Merit.)
There's going to be a rather large party in South Africa this year. Some call it the World Cup.
But before there can be the real party, there must be another party beforehand. Because it's not really a party unless it's sandwiched by eight other parties of no importance whatsoever. And judging by the musical lineup for the World Cup pre-party, this will be no different. [read more]
FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!
There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.
So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]
