Wondergoal: Peter Houtman

Wonder goals are really wonder goals when they’re scored in important matches! Peter Houtman – currently stadium speaker at Feyenoord – was a typical Wim Kieft like striker. Tall, static, strong in the air. The guy started his career at the Feyenoord youth, then was told to leave (not good enough). He played for FC [...]

Trouble for Ajax and Feyenoord; PSV wins…

Heitinga scores…
Well, we’re off… and what a start!
PSV does what it always does. It wins. 5-1 to be precise. With an Afellay on fire! The youngster recently declared he wants to leave PSV next summer but this season will have to be his season. The neo-international scored two goals in the whole of last season [...]

Wondergoal: Peter Hoekstra

Peter Hoekstra… He was one hell of a left winger! Came from nowhere into PSV, a much coveted youth player. His length, his speed, his technique…a joy to watch… He was part of Hiddink’s EC1996 squad and was supposed to become one of Holland’s most exciting players. But fate happened. Hoekstra’s tall and lean [...]

Huntelaar: canon with hunger for the title

The Hunter wants to score 35 competition goals this season, win the title and he wants to read a good book every now and then. No striker in Holland, or anywhere in the world, will be quoted saying that.
KLaas Jan is midway through “De Donkere Kamer van Damokles” when his third season at Ajax is [...]

And we’re off… much to look forward to!

Well my friends, the Dutch Eredivisie started and from out of nowhere the number of football news-items is exploding.
Quickly then:
FC Groningen trashed Vitesse in their away game 0-4. It seems Ron Jans is doing it again.
Marco van Basten wants Kees Jansma to become Ajax’ new general manager. San Marco worked with Jansma at the KNVB [...]

PSV builds on Dutch talent

Robben for PSV
Some years ago, PSV broke with tradition by attracting young Dutch players to play in Eindhoven. Think Mark van Bommel, Wilfred Bouma, Kevin Hofland, John de Jong and Arjen Robben. This summer, PSV does it again.
Director Jan Reker presented PSV’s new signing, FC Groningen talent Stef Nijland (20 years old), with the comment: [...]

Wondergoal+: Jari Litmanen

An overview of great goals is never complete without Mr Glass from Finland. Jari traveled Europe as an apprentice before Louis van Gaal signed him for Ajax. Dan Pedersen – Denmark – was the chosen one to fill Dennis Bergkamp shoes at Ajax after he’d left. But when the Dane got injured Litmanen took the [...]

Eredivisie predictions: who wins the title?

Time to get the poll thingamajig out again. I didn’t pay for it not to use it, right?
It’s time to get all interactive on your collective asses! We’ve been dormant for some time after the EC and during the Olympics most of us couldn’t care less, but now…the action starts again!
The English competition has started, [...]

Kluivert: unremarkable farewell for remarkable striker

He had given himself till the end of July to find a new club. But, he really wanted a top club. Patrick Kluivert (31) didn’t want to end his career in the cellar of some competition. It’s August now, and that top club hasn’t found Kluivert’s number. And they probably never will.
Kluivert played in Stam’s [...]

PSV grabs first prize; Oranje looks to Oz

The Johan Cruyff Schaal (Dutch Supercup) is won by PSV, in a predictable match against a weakened Feyenoord. I haven’t seen the match, but from what I read here and there, PSV won deservedly against a not-so-badly playing Feyenoord. In the first half, PSV seemed to be too hasty. Feyenoord could play along well and [...]

World Cup Legends: Just Fontaine.

March 3rd, 2010 | By: chris | Comments Comments(-3)

When the words "1958 World Cup" pop into conversation, the minds of most typically latch onto one name: Pelé.

It was his coming out party and he deserves every bit of praise he receives, leading Brazil to its first title as a 17 year old burgeoning legend. Yet lurking in the not-so-distant background is a man whose tournament was no less impressive, and still stands today as the single most statistically bountiful World Cup in history: France's Just Fontaine. [read more]

Zinedine Zidane Shows His Futsal Skills in France '98 vs Algeria '82/'86

March 2nd, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(2)

Relations between France and Algeria have always been a bit tricky. This isn't the place to discuss the specifics, but there's a whole Wikipedia page about Algeria–France relations if you want to read up. Despite said trickiness, there is one man who can claim to be loved in both countries: Zinedine Zidane.

Born in France to Algerian parents, Zidane is unmistakably proud of his dual identity. So yesterday Zizou and other members of France's 1998 World Cup winning team played a game of futsal in Algeria vs a combination of the 1982 and 1986 Algerian World Cup teams.

The idea seems to have been to promote good will and friendship between the two nations. A worthy cause of course. But I know you (like me) are probably more interested in seeing Zidane in action on the futsal court. Don't worry, there's plenty of video below. [read more]

100 Days Until World Cup 2010 Kickoff

March 2nd, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(5)

There were celebrations in South Africa today to mark the 100 day countdown to World Cup 2010. OK, yes, 100 is just an arbitrary number. There's no real reason to celebrate 100 days to World Cup kickoff anymore than there is to celebrate 102 days to World Cup kickoff. I [read more]

ESPN Ranks World Cup Players 1-50.

March 2nd, 2010 | By: chris | Comments Comments(22)

The Global Leader In Sports jumps through hoops for the Globe's Sport once every four years during the World Cup, often conveniently with parent company ABC holding the broadcast rights - at least until recently. After losing Champions League rights they acquired some Premier League and La Liga rights, while launching ESPN360, an all-sports outfit, but one which prominently features games from La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, Eredivisie and various other cup competitions on a weekly basis. They also moved abroad, launching ESPN in the UK last fall.

The reputation of the network, especially that of the website, hasn't always been very good when it comes to the beautiful game, but they're trying*, and it's earning a bit of leeway (at least in these parts). So when ESPN's 23-person panel announced the top 50 players going to the World Cup (bolding that so people can be yelled at for the inevitable 'ZOMFG?!?!?! ZLATAN?!?!?! ARSHAVIN?!?!?!' later), I went in with an open mind. [read more]

PSV drop points but remain at the top, 0-0 against Vitesse Arnhem

If ball possession ever won you games, then I think I would have gone to sleep happily knowing that my favourite team had an extra 3 points to cushion their lead. By end of the story, it felt like Feyenoord version 2. The Boerens dominated but lacked finishing touch all ...

Christmas present - players loaned out to Willem II and Peru's Juan Aurich

The very short list of PSV players loaned out has been increased "dramatically" percentage wise with the addition of Reimond Manco and Stef Nijland onto the 4 man list! For the two youngsters, they still lack in ability to really nail down a spot in the first team. But these two ...

Christmas of nothingness

For those who don't know, the heavens have caused a mega spoil party over at Europe (and North America) by bombarding snow. Now naturally, weather phenomenons hardly build up any connection with football. But seeing how we humans are very easily affected by the weather, loads of fixtures have been ...
