UEFA Cup: where do we stand?
Hunter scores again after 6 dry matches.
Hard to say, really.
Feyenoord lost at home against Sweden’s number one. Feyenoord had to play without Slory, Makaay, Landzaat and Bruins and due to all hick-ups in the warm up Verbeek’s team just hasn’t been able to gel yet. Can you blame anyone? The Swedes obviously are a team [...]
UEFA Cup warm up
NEC coach Mario Been
Well, I’d almost say: the interesting European Cup for us Dutchies is starting soon… As if I accept the fact that we don’t have any business in the CL. And with PSV’s performance against Atletico, this might well be true. Does Holland have anything to achieve in the Champions League? Do we [...]
Matchday 1, part 2: Real Madrid disappoints…
Man United had a clincher to start with this CL campaign, playing Villareal at home.
Manchester looked the business throughout, but with a strong opponent like Villareal, you don’t want to give too much away. The Mancunians didn’t, but were also unable to create anything more than pressure and a couple of chances, 0-0. Van der [...]
Ibrahim Afellay not nervous for Atletico
Ibrahim Afellay has to smile when he hears the question: which PSV player has more experience in the CL than the 22 year old? Afellay answers: “I don’t know. It’s your job to do your own research.”
It’s a weird reality, only two players – the 35 year old Timmy Simons and the 25 year old [...]
Now what is it exactly that you want??
Maroon 5 dedicated a song to this blog, called…eh… “This Blog”.
It goes: “this blog has taken it’s toll on me, but you said goodbye, so many times before…”
During tournaments, we sometimes hit 100+ comments or more, while during the off-season for national teams, sometimes only Goose comments
This is your chance! I’d like to [...]
Avram Grant sacked: Rijkaard and Hiddink on the list
Avram Grant demonstrates his euphoric happy side
A livid Avram Grant walked away from the meeting with Chelsea owner Abramovic, a man he though was his friend, after he was told he couldn’t stay on as manager of the first team. Roman Abramovic did offer his old job – thechnical manager for 4 Mio euros per [...]
Van der Sar: Now I am going to quit!
Edwin van der Sar was having fun when interviewed right after winning the Champions League with Man United: ” Young young boys’ dream? Are you serious? This is more an old man’s dream,” the 37 year old quipped.
Van der Sar stopped Chelsea’s seventh penalty kick. He knew he’d stop it: “I know it’s easy to [...]
CL Finals: Sar does it!!!
After their EPL showdown you could only expect high drama and intensity in the CL finals between the Blues and the Mancunians. And that’s exactly what we got.
Chelsea had trouble settling into the game. There is a lot at stake for manager Grant and the Chelsea players have looked forward to finally reaching the finals [...]
Champions League finals: dance of millions…
The Richest Clubs of the World (sorry it’s in Dutch).
Before Roman Abramovich boarded his private jet to go to Moscow for the CL finals he quickly bought two paintings for his London home. The Chelsea owner paid 75 Mio euros for the Francis Bacon and Freud doodles. When Roman wants something, he buys it.
Whether it’s [...]
UEFA Cup for Dick Advocaat
I’ve got to be honest with you… I’m not a big Dick fan. I mean…I am not a big fan of Dick… I think he is a bit of a…eh…a wannabe Dick, you know?
Ok, he was interesting as a player. He was successful in his younger days with SVV (who??). And he did win the [...]
World Cup Moments: Dennis Bergkamp's Goal vs Argentina in 1998
If you remember the 1998 World Cup in France, then you remember Dennis Bergkamp's goal for the Netherlands in the quarterfinal vs Argentina. The score was 1-1 in the 89th minute, and extra time looked almost certain. Until Bergkamp produced his moment of magic.
The goal was all about three touches, all with his right foot. First Bergkamp brings down a long high pass from Frank DeBoer as gently as if he were putting an infant to bed. Second, he knocks the ball through experienced Argentina defender Roberto Ayala's legs for a surprise nutmeg. Third he expertly judges the bounce and fires into the far corner to win the game and take Holland through to the World Cup semi-finals.
We have a YouTube video below, featuring the now famous Dutch language commentary from Jack van Gelder. The man is so ecstatic at what he's just witnessed he can only scream the name "Dennis Bergkamp!" over and over again. Watch below and try not to do the same. [read more]
Fashion Faux Pas: Italian Fishnet.
Italy's Gianluigi Buffon's official World Cup home kit was released recently, and it caught a few eyes. Largely because everyone at Puma thought it was to be for the Italian ski team to be performing at Vancouver, thus the reason it looks like it was made for...the Italian national ski team.
Coincidentally, Gigi pulled up lame with a thigh injury just before the recent friendly and thus he avoided having to wear the kit - Fedrico Marchetti was given that chore. Vicious rumors persist that Buffon was hiding from the kit. No one blames him. [read more]
Brazil World Cup Team History: Part III (1974-1990)
In Part I of Brazil's World Cup history, we covered the barren years of 1930 to 1954. In Part II we reveled in the golden years of 1958 to 1970, which yielded three World Cup triumphs and permanent possession of the Jules Rimet trophy. But the good times can't go on forever, and if one national team continued to win the World Cup 75% of the time (as Brazil did from '58 to '70) then we'd probably all stop watching. So in Part III we recap Brazil's post-1970 trophyless spell. Plenty of good football (especially from the Brazil team of 1982) but no World Cups from 1974 to 1990. [read more]
Are There Workable Alternatives to Video Replay/Goal Line Technology?
As Rob already reported in his previous post, FIFA just put their foot down on the issue of introducing any form of technology to help referees.
At the 124th Annual General Meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), chaired by FIFA, a decision was made to no longer pursue the development of goal-line technology - or consider technology in football in general. [read more]

PSV drop points but remain at the top, 0-0 against Vitesse Arnhem
If ball possession ever won you games, then I think I would have gone to sleep happily knowing that my favourite team had an extra 3 points to cushion their lead. By end of the story, it felt like Feyenoord version 2. The Boerens dominated but lacked finishing touch all ...

Christmas present - players loaned out to Willem II and Peru's Juan Aurich
The very short list of PSV players loaned out has been increased "dramatically" percentage wise with the addition of Reimond Manco and Stef Nijland onto the 4 man list! For the two youngsters, they still lack in ability to really nail down a spot in the first team. But these two ...

For those who don't know, the heavens have caused a mega spoil party over at Europe (and North America) by bombarding snow.
