Bert van Marwijk: 20 names are definite…
Bert: “Elbows are sooo 2009… Why don’t you bitch slap your opponent, like this!”
Unless they bump into a major injury or something else silly…
Van Marwijk felt that Spain, Brazil and England are among the favorites, but Holland is be too.
“We might not have the word class players at all spots, but like Feyenoord in 2002 [...]
Van Gaal re-invents football rules…
Louis seems to take out this linesman with a karate kick!
Louis van Gaal is a bit like Johan Cruyff. He has an opinion about everything. I may have been that character trait which motivated the Ajax managers of the 1970s to appoint Van Gaal – the playmaker of Ajax C – as the successor to [...]
Weekend Action; Vlaar – Suarez – Urby
Well good people… I will not keep on whining how it’s not good to watch Dutch matches after having seen Bayern, Manchester United or Barca play football.
Sure, the Ajax-PSV match was laden with tension and Dutch football has slipped a bit, etc etc… It’s so easy to be negative and I will try to be [...]
Ajax – PSV: decider of the Eredivisie season?
Late on Sunday, the Eredivisie number 3 hosts the game against the number 2. Winning for both clubs is crucial to have a chance to put some strain on leaders FC Twente. Most people will say that Twente – despite of their qualities – won’t win the title. “The stress will get to them”.
I’m not [...]
Mark van Bommel, better than ever…
Watching Bayern play Fiorentina, I noticed that this was the first time ever I wanted Bayern to score and to win. In all honesty, I hope Bayern wins the Champions League…
They were the arch-enemy for a long long time. They took over the crown of Ajax in the early 1970s, winning the Europa Cup 1 [...]
Luigi Bruins, Arjen Robben and Mark van Bommel
I’m a bit late with this post. I’m a tad busy you see… But nevertheless. We had some interesting action in the Dutch Eredivisie last weekend. PSV dropping points. Ajax taking care of business. Feyenoord winning in style (ok, against ten men) and Makaay scoring again and Twente winning thanks to a brilliant Ken Perez.
Luigi [...]
Memories of Mr Ajax, Bobby Haarms…
Bumped into this article recently. Bobby Haarms, unsung hero of Ajax.
Some memories…
Bobby Haarms ends his active career as a player in 1959. Too early, due to injuries. From that moment on, Haarms is full time supporter. His team, his mates, would win the title in 1960, the Intertoto in 1962 and later on even Europa [...]
Nigel de Jong: Neeskens was glorified for this…
Stuart Holden, the USA player who got kicked out of the game by Nigel de Jong is out for six week. The Bolton Wanderers midfielder broke his leg.
De Jong’s challenge gave fuel to an old debate. Everyone knows that players like Van Bommel and De Jong ( and before them Davids, Neeskens, Wouters) are [...]
Holland – USA 2-1; What does this tell us…?
Well, without having seen the game I can simply repeat what I said earlier: I don’t like friendlies ( sing on the tune of the Boomtown Rats’ “I don’t like Mondays”)
It’s a waste of time. For me, that is. Not for Bert van Marwijk. But I can’t get excited for those types of games. What [...]
Everyone fit and eager at Oranje and Ruud is on his way
Spring is in the air and two smiling new faces… What better way to start the preparation for the friendly fixture against the USA. Oranje uses the Quick Boys complex in Katwijk for training, witnessed by a number of Japanese journalists.
The night before, Twente goalie Sander Boschker and Feyenoord defender Ron Vlaar were welcomed by [...]
FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!
There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.
So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]
World Cup 2010 National Anthems: South Africa, France, Mexico, Uruguay
Seems like the most popular part of our World Cup 2010 preview podcast was the national anthems segment. I would agree, in that any segment where we're not talking is instantly preferable to the segments where we are. But since those podcasts contain only 10-15 second lyric-less samples, I thought it was worth expanding the idea into a full series of posts about national anthems.
As you hopefully know, the national anthems of each team will be played before every World Cup game, adding to both the atmosphere and the sense of occasion. For this first post, may I present the national anthems of Group A: South Africa, France, Mexico and Uruguay. [read more]
World Cup Moments: Philipp Lahm Kicks Off The World Cup Properly, 2006.
When discussing the history of any sport, any talk of the "greatness" is bound to be met with a quick hop in a time machine, going back into the annuls annals where myth and storytelling often displace fact and reality to the back seat. And this was necessary in a time when most could only follow sport through the words of others; words which were often embellished, contorted, polished, creating an aura which far superseded the event. Similar to the children's game which starts with a simple sentence at one end of the room and morphs into something entirely different by the time the exercise ends.
A lot of times, great moments are much simpler than we think. Sometimes great moments are just that: moments. Moments without grand results, without a decisive impact, without parades, and without babies being made on the streets. Merely a single moment in time meant to be enjoyed. And equally as often, these moments are right underneath our noses. [read more]
World Cup 2010 Jerseys: Mexico
We continue our review of World Cup 2010 kits with a look at what Mexico will be wearing in South Africa. As mentioned before, I have zero fashion credentials. Unless sitting through The Devil Wears Prada and finding it reasonably enjoyable counts. Which I'm pretty sure it doesn't. But I can offer an honest reaction that hopefully stays away from being either too snarky or too serious.
Big news is that between World Cup 2006 and World Cup 2010, Mexico made the switch. The big switch. From Nike to adidas. So the home and away versions of their three stripe manufactured World Cup 2010 kits (as modeled very seriously by Francisco Palencia to the left there) can be found below. [read more]

PSV drop points but remain at the top, 0-0 against Vitesse Arnhem
If ball possession ever won you games, then I think I would have gone to sleep happily knowing that my favourite team had an extra 3 points to cushion their lead. By end of the story, it felt like Feyenoord version 2. The Boerens dominated but lacked finishing touch all ...

Christmas present - players loaned out to Willem II and Peru's Juan Aurich
The very short list of PSV players loaned out has been increased "dramatically" percentage wise with the addition of Reimond Manco and Stef Nijland onto the 4 man list! For the two youngsters, they still lack in ability to really nail down a spot in the first team. But these two ...

For those who don't know, the heavens have caused a mega spoil party over at Europe (and North America) by bombarding snow.
