Titbits…

Ajax lost the first play off finals leg against FC Twente. Away from home, Ajax did get the 0-1 through Suarez, but FC Twente turned it around 2-1. Two goals by Swiss striker Blaise N’Kufo. It seems the ref didn’t see a hand ball by Twente in the box, while he did spot the Ajax version of it.
Next week, Twente travels to Amsterdam.

Frank Rijkaard said he could live with Barca’ decision to replace him. “That’s football. You know the rules when you start. We didn’t manage to win anything or to impress. Than you know, as a coach, you are in trouble. I am grateful to have worked here. It was a wonderful time in my life and I want to thank the fans in particular. For me, the team and the performance were the most important. I have done my utmost for the club and the fans.”

Johan Cruyff: “Rijkaard brought silverware to Barcelona, but more importantly, he gave Barca prestige. We may have played the best football of the world during his tenure. Just look at where Barca was 5 years ago and where we are now. Most of it is thanks to him. The club needs to be grateful to him. And look at the deal between Barcelona and Unicef. That sums up Rijkaard very well.”

Arjen Robben will be rested against Real Zaragoza. The left winger took a hit on his foot and the club decided to allow him some rest. Madrid has secured the title and the Zaragoza match will be played for the statistics only.

Daily Star in the UK today reports that Rijkaard is the new coach of Man City. Sven will surely be fired (if there ever were any doubt) after the 8-1 loss to Boro, and Scolari has evidently turned down a very lucrative offer. Stay tuned on this one.

I watched both Man U and Chelsea today. Man U deserved the win (and winning the Prem overall) but they had the referee in their pocket for this game. Ferdinand had a handball that should have been a penalty, Rooney dived for their penalty, and Scholes should have been sent off in first half for a second yellow. Chelsea should have won by 4 goals. Horrible finishing. They seemed flat and not wanting it as much as Man U. That has to be on the manager. If they don’t win the CL, Avram is surely gone. He may be gone anyway. Terry got hurt (dislocated elbow, don’t know how bad it is though.

Anyway, what was more troublesome was that I thought EVDS had a terrible game. And his kicking surely not only is questionable, but has deteriorated significantly the last 6 months. Don’t like that one bit going into EC08

The way Chelsea have come back in the Premiership this season and gone further than ever before in Europe, it would be a travesty if Grant were sacked.
