Squad Numbers

Now you can run out and buy that replica shirt you’ve been aching for with the knowledge of what number your favourite player will be wearing!

Netherlands
1 GK VAN DER SAR Edwin – (Manchester Utd., ENG)
2 DF JALIENS Kew – (AZ Alkmaar, NED)
3 DF BOULAHROUZ Khalid – (Hamburger SV, GER)
4 DF MATHIJSEN Joris – (AZ Alkmaar, NED)
5 DF VAN BRONCKHORST Giovanni – (Barcelona, ESP)
6 MF LANDZAAT Denny – (AZ Alkmaar, NED)
7 FW KUYT Dirk – (Feyenoord, NED)
8 MF COCU Phillip – (PSV Eindhoven, NED)
9 FW VAN NISTELROOIJ Ruud – (Manchester Utd., ENG)
10 MF VAN DER VAART Rafael – (Hamburger SV, GER)
11 FW ROBBEN Arjen – (Chelsea, ENG)
12 DF KROMKAMP Jan – (Liverpool, ENG)
13 DF OOIJER Andre – (PSV Eindhoven, NED)
14 DF HEITINGA John – (Ajax, NED)
15 DF DE CLER Tim – (AZ Alkmaar, NED)
16 MF MADURO Hedwiges – (Ajax, NED)
17 FW VAN PERSIE Robin – (Arsenal, ENG)
18 MF VAN BOMMEL Mark – (Barcelona, ESP)
19 FW VENNEGOOR OF HESSELINK Jan – (PSV Eindhoven, NED)
20 MF SNEIJDER Wesley – (Ajax, NED)
21 FW BABEL Ryan – (Ajax, NED)
22 GK TIMMER Henk – (AZ Alkmaar, NED)
23 GK STEKELENBURG Maarten – (Ajax, NED)

I absolutely stole that list from Bob’s post. So sue me. Make sure you pay respects to the big man though and check out his original story. As for me…I think I want either a van der Vaart #10 or else a Robben #11. I’m leaning towards Rafael though.

Can we make assumptions about van Basten’s preferred line up by looking at #1-11? Landzaat, Cocu and van der Vaart starting in midfield, Mathijsen at centre back. I dunno.

@mike
yes, i think numbers 1_11 are going to be the starting line up, because i remember very well in the 1998 the same happened the numbers 1_11 were the ones who started the first game, unless there is an injured player, and i think we will see against cameroon.
i would’ve liked to see sneijder included in the 1_11 numbers. but anyway we’ll see how things will go against cameroon.

i think sneider could be included too. in place of 6.landzaat. coz sneijder is not a defensive player, and no 6 normally for a defensive player?

dnt no… would like seijder to play however!

You never know…The numbers never amounted to much in the past. In 74 we had a certain no. 14, Neeskens with 13, Rep with 16… And I think v Basten will definitely use the next weeks to determine who’ll start. I wouldn’t rule out Sneijder in the starting line up.

In ‘74 I know they did the squad numbers alphabetically with the exception of Cruyff who got his number 14

what about 2 DF JALIENS Kew? what kind of player is he? how many selections for netherlands does he have? is he a good player? does he have experience for top competitions? so many questions…

Kew Jaliens – you pronounce his name like you do “new” – is a talented defender. Very athletic, tough in the duels and a good header. He started his career at Sparta Rotterdam (like Danny Blind) and was watched closely by the top teams in Holland. Just when it was time for him to make a move, Sparta had a dreadly season and Jaliens was signed by Willem II, where he had an ok season. It seemed he had said farewell to a great career, until AZ came for him after Kromkamp left. AZ – being the 4th top club in Holland at the moment – offered Jaliens the platform to show himself again. He had a great season, is a clean, tough, fast and concentrated defender, but….he is coming back from a tough injury. I don’t expect him to play – despite the “2″.

ah that’s what i thought too, maybe Kromkamp? he’s good. n played good matches for netherlands in the world cup qualifiers…

in center with BOULAHROUZ it’s HEITINGA or MATHIJSEN?

I expect Kromkamp as well. He has been van Basten’s preferred right back recently. We could do a lot worse than him.

i dunno about Heitinga in the centre…i mean i’m an ajax fan and therefore i like him but it seems to me that heitinga is prone to the ocassional poorly judged/rash challenge and i dont think we want to give up to many free kicks from a central position. he might be better suited for right back but he won’t start ahead of kromkamp i suspect.

In my viem Cocu and Boulha should play together in the back. Kromkamp right, Gio left. Kromkamp is the ideal defense full back in v Basten’s vision, but he just doesn’t play enough with Liverpool. Both in Spain and England they think he is too offensive. Maybe Rijkaard wants him at Barca :-) ). That Oligueara or what’s his name was below par against Arsenal anyway. Getting back to the line-up, than v Bommel can play central midfield and Landzaat/Sneijder on the right position. I think V Basten will play Matthijssen en Bouhla in center, maybe good ol’ Ooijer. I worry a bit about this defensive line up. We do not have any more De Boer’s, Stams, Bogarde’s, Israel’s, Rijsbergen’s… Where are the butchers?

whats van bastens idea of leaving jan huntelaar back at home and taking ryan babel 2 the world cup! babel from what i have seen is nothing compared! also huntelaar is the 2nd top scorer out of all the european leagues. madness!! i thought van bastens policy was 2 take players who play regualary for their club, babel doesnt.

He is on form D.O. but van Basten decided he didn’t want four central strikers. Look back in the posts for the squad announcement; there’s lots of discussion there.

Let’s me comment about Kromkramp, he doesn’t have a good defensive skill. it is important to note that all of the world class fullbacks are good in defense even most of them also have attacking role like Krol, Maldini, R. carlos, Cafu ect. I haven’t watched Jaliens playing yet but he probably better than Kromkamp in rt.back.
