Work and sweat! That’s what the cry-babies need to do!!

December 8th, 2008 | By: Jan | 20 Comments »

The AD newspaper has by far the best sports-section. Good for me, because as a Rotterdam-based newspaper, they tend to have a lot of Feyenoord related stuff. One of the things they offer is fan-articles. In this case, a Feyenoord fan with writing skills who every now and then shines his light on the situation. Here we go:

“I am getting more and more annoyed about the Feyenoord players. I will never admit it of course, I don’t want to make the crisis even bigger, but I am just not to pleased with their cry-baby behaviour.

Now, apparently, they talked off the record to De Telegraaf. Of all media… How pathetic!

I quickly did a vote in my head and I think 80% of the players are big whiners.

I don’t agree with their laments on the training program. When I see them play, the only thing I can think is: you guys gotta train even harder! I also think their tactical decisions are poor and I do feel their communication stinks!

After the loss against Deportivo, Makaay, Hofland and Lucius felt they should enjoy a couple of beers with sponsors in the hotel. Gertjan Verbeek didn’t like that look and told them to go to their room. Well done Gertjan!

Some players obviously find it hard to put everything aside for their dream profession: playing football for the best club in the world. And then they even leak inside information to reporters they think are their friends…

I think any club needs a good coach, a fanatical fan base and players who are worthy to wear the club colors. I think Feyenoord has two out of three. Of course, Verbeek makes mistakes like anyone else, but he is willing to work hard for his club.

The fans are always behind the team when needed: their love is unconditional. And how bout the players? These spoilt cry-babies should shut up and work like bricklayers for their humungous pay checks. And if you don’t like it, tear up your contract and piss off to some other club!

That’s how it is!”

Feyenoord general manager Eric Gudde gets the question that seemed to be classic by now: will Gertjan Verbeek reach Christmas in Rotterdam? “Gertjan will most certainly reach Christmas in 2008 and most definitely Christmas in 2009 as well!”

“We don’t have any doubts about our strategy. And Gertjan is the ideal man for the job. It doesn’t bring us results yet, that’s the only thing. But we support him and his beliefs for 100%. He has made the changes we wanted to see him make.”

Feyenoord wants a top sports climate in Rotterdam, something that has been lacking for years. “Gio van Bronckhorst said recently that coming back to Feyenoord after all these years was like coming home. Nothing had changed. He didn’t mean it as negative, but in a way it’s not a good thing to me. Gio had been gone for what, ten years? Stuff needs to change, needs to progress. We can’t keep on going the way we did ten years back.”

Gudde doesn’t want to surrender to the spur of the moment. “Everyone here knows it’s a serious situation we’re in. But changing strategies on a whim is the worst thing to do. Every major change is paired with resistance and pain. We didn’t expect the resistance to be this big, but it’s not a cause to abandon our vision.”

The general manager will listen to his players though. “We take everyone’s opinion in. Players are part of the process and we will thoroughly assess the situation. But I want facts. Not just sensational stories from an Amsterdam-based paper.”

Couldn’t agree more with your headline Jan. Feyenoord should do a lot better. As much as an Ajax man as I am, and as little as I do not lose any sleep over Feyenoord’s lack of performance, they still should not be getting into a relegation fight. That is not good for Dutch football, and just wrong.

Off topic, but a bit of breaking news: Norwegian coach Hareide just resigned today. He said he is tired and just does not have what it takes to take the team forward in 2009 and the end of the qual.

So now the search is on. Favorite is coach Trond Sollied of Hereenveen, but they also mention Guus Hiddink and Roy Keane :-) I think the job is Sollied’s if he wants it. Heerenveen contract is not a problem. When Norway hired Hareide from Rosenborg, they paid a hefty fee for him and they will do the same to hereenveen if coach Sollied wants the job. Only problem on that front is that I believe his wife is Belgian and likes to live and raise their kids in the Benelux. Anyway, will keep you all posted. Sollied is the bookies favorite so maybe Herenveen needs to look for a new coach soon.

The rumor last was, that Sollied was going to be sacked after the beating they took against Twente (?). Foppe de Haan is already waiting in the wings as interim coach. You actually forecasted the Norwegian coach quitting, I remember.

Oh How I miss the Great Roy Makaay, who orchestrated wonders at Deportivo and Bayern, scoring the quickest goal in Champions League history in just 10 seconds. I was always amazed with his great striking abilities. He is one of the finest the Oranje has ever produced. Of Course, He is now weak by time and fate, and no longer in the limelight…but I love Roy Makaay!

Tiju, you keep on repeating this :-) . But it’s not fair for the man who flourishes in 4-4-2 (which Oranje in his days hardly played) and if Roy played it was a right winger…

But yeah, Feyenoord sucks.

I wrote a piece on the crisis on http://netherlands.theoffside.com

Drop in please :-)

i think faynoord needs some treatment and i belive verbeek can do those chenges problems are mainly with senor players mainly Makkay, hofland and gio,
the hardworks of fer, wijnaldum are going waste because of makkay and hofland.faynoord should look for lethal striker and good diffenders not the coach and gio should be striped of from the captaincy

yep..it’s always scary when the president gives the coach the dreaded vote of confidence…amazing how a coach from the bottom of the premier league can take over the top (well close)of the primera…..some Dutch boys on the market soon am sure.

Well better to be on the market than on the bench at Real. The lads needs regular run-outs to develop properly.

I’d love to see some of them move to the EPL. Jusk look at how far Zuiverloon and Donk have come in just a few months even at a club like West Brom. They did a very smart thing.

With the exception of Ferenc’s Barca, the CL will be yet another all English affair this year. The EPL is just getting more powerful year after year, including getting more depth. Just look at Aston Villa giving the big 4 a run and how even it is from 8th place to relegation.

La Liga is subpar nowadays. I think Reading from the Championship would make CL from Spain.

la liga is better than the pl. players are more skilled technically, have more tactical sense etc. english football has no brain,no beauty, only kick and run. except the big four there no other british team get results in europe. even osasuna would be 5th or 6th in england. btw: mu-villareal 0-0,0-0,pool-atletico madrid 1-1,1-1.

Ferenc, as much as I love you brother, this we disagree on. EPL is far superior to La Liga at the moment and the gap is growing.

Osasuna would struggle to even be 5th or 6th in the English Fuzzy Pop League (The Coca Cola Championship).

There was a time Sapin had the best league. Hasn’t been the case for several years now, and wont because the money isnt there. The good news for you though, Ferenc, is that Barca is quite possibly the best team in Europe right now. But the league as a whole is way inferior to the EPL.

I’d say that the La Liga is definitely a lot stronger than the EPL. When you look at some recent transfers, such as Deco, Torres, Robinho, they were average in la Liga, Robinho on bench, Torres with about 15 goals a season, and Deco playing relatively well. They all come to the EPL and are immediatlely stars because besides the Big Four the EPL is weak. When you look at Torres or Cristiano Ronaldo or Adebayor last years top 3 scorers, I think only Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal against another top 4 team.

@jan sorry i will take care, this is not an excuse but fact, i wrote those comments in hurry,
La liga is too strong in the aspects of depth apart from big four, there is no really skilled team from EPL
but spain case is different apart from big two thay have minimum 7 teams are almost equal and able to compete with any EPL team and they will beat them

I’d say that in general the EPL is stronger than la Liga, but it’s always difficult to compare an entire league to another one.

@Dirk – don’t forget that there are other circumstances to consider with the players you listed:
Deco – was playing for Barca when they were in a slump and then moved to a Chelsea team that is really solid.
Torres – was playing at a sub-top club and then moved to a top club.
Robinho – is a confidence player and I think he really likes the big fish in a small pond feeling he gets at Citeh.
