Who needs to succeed Van Basten?
The AD newspaper had a poll recently… Who is the best man to follow up on Marco van Basten after the EC?
As you can imagine (and you put your 2cents in already, I know) the usuals suspects came up… I’ll give them in random order and give my personal remarks with them…
Louis van Gaal
Fave for many, but not for me. He failed once. And I don’t believe in getting coaches back for the second time. I also can’t imagine the KNVB giving Louis another go after the hilarious press-outings we saw with him.
Co Adriaanse
My favorite. But Co is seen as a very tough man to work with (for the officials, that is… not so much for the players…). And, is the KNVB willing to pay Co’s asking price?
Bert van Marwijk
He rejuvinated Feyenoord recently. Many players signed on for him. I can’t see him leave Feyenoord. Also, the KNVB can’t really lure a coach away from one of Holland’s flagship clubs… So….
Guus Hiddink
He just renewed his Russian contract. He said NO to Bayern Munich… Guus won’t do it.
Martin Jol
Apparently, he was informally approached by “a anonymous KNVB staff member”. When that leaked to the press, Kesler stated that he never wanted Jol and that he was out of the question… So, the KNVB can’t ask him anymore without losing face, and Kesler doesn’t want to lose face…
Frank Rijkaard
He was asked for the role, and said no. He wants to finish the job at Barca, so no dice for Frankie.
Jurgen Klinsmann
Has been signed by Bayern Munich already. Not longer available.
Jose Mourinho
Probably to expensive and in my view not the right man for the job. Good for Bayern, for Juventus, for Inter… Not for a Dutch club.
Fred Rutten
Great candidate. Highly revered in Holland. Lacks experience in the top, but that didn’t stop the KNVB with Marco. Proven track-record at PSV and FC Twente. Makes players better, knows how to form a winning team, good motivator…but lacks charisma which is important for this job.
Foppe de Haan
Best candidate for many, but Mrs De Haan veto-ed his signing already. So, Foppe will focus on the Olympics and will bring home that Golden Medal.
Willem van Hanegem
Many people like him, but after his assistant role in 2004 and the awkward manner in which he presents himself to the press (or doesn’t present himself) makes him an unlikely candidate. I can’t see the KNVB deciding on Willem. Too much of a rebel.
Johan Cruyff
Come on…. He’ll never do it. JC wants to remain the Legend.

@jan; surprising you have Adriaans as nr1 on your list .. hes the same kinda guy as vanGaal only without the big name .. if i need to choose between the two vanGaal would come out on top
my fave has to be vanMarwijk, good trainer, nice person, easy going … just a top manager, i think hell have a clasule (?) in his contract that would make it possible for him to leave Feyenoord to become the new Bondscoach (most managers have these kind of clasules)
Jol is another fave of mine but mainly cause i think he looks so cool!! haha.. like a mafia hitman i once read on this blog .. i would love to go to war with Jol!!
the 2 managers we need to watch is; Fred Rutten (Fc Twente) en Ron Jans (Fc Groningen), these 2 are the ‘crownprinces’of dutch football managers
my list
1. vanMarwijk
2. vanGaal
3. Jol
4. deHaan
will wait and see; but trust me, changes are great the next one will be a better peoples-manager than vanBasten is/was!!! haha
grtz

Van Maarwijk: I don’t know much about van Maarwijk but I see he’s doing a good job at Feyenord and have good ideas to form the team. He called Slory, Makaay, Hofland, Gio and this shows he is a great coach with a very good vision.
Van Gaal: is a great coach and I personally worship him. What he did with that Ajax 90’s was incredible, the way they played was so beautiful to watch. During his time with the Orange team he failed as we know but he had some difficulties.
1) The 1st game against Ireland everyone was injured and also against Portugal, I remember he played some players who had never played with the national team because everyone was injured.
2) The problem of Davids and Frank de Boer with supposed drugs, they didn’t play the last game against Ireland.
I think van Gaal could be a great option actually. He is a good leader, strict, attack on his mind, uses many different strategies and formations, takes risks and is very good developin young players.
Jol: I wouldn’t like him to be our next coach. What he did with Davids was incredible, he benched him and Davids has to be titular in any team. And he didn’t have much success with Tottenham.
Hiddink: Great manager as we all know and I think if the KNVB approaches him he could think it over. He has already said he’d like to coach the Orange again.
Foppe de Haan: After the Olympics he could take the job and he’s old so he doesn’t have much time to think it over. He is a leader, a teacher and a great personality. Good with young players of course, good strategies but it’s not the same a young team to the national senior team. Argentina had a coach of the U-21 who won many tournaments (Pekerman is his name) he was their coach for the last WC and after the tournament he was very criticized. Foppe deserves a chance and I am very sure he’ll take it.
Mourinho???. He is a good manager but he doesn’t have the Orange mentality of attack and play beautiful. He’s a winner which is good but van Gaal is far much better in my opinion.
Adriaanese: He did a great job with AZ, he has mentality and could be a good option. And he will be in contact with van Gaal asking for advices which would be good.
Rijkaard: Good coach but I would prefer another coach and not him. Sometimes he lacks personality and is too soft with his players.
Willem van Hanegem: He did very bad in the EC 2004 as the assistant but could be an option. Sometimes you learn from mistakes and get better.
Koeman and Ten Cate are others we should consider. Koeman has had some success and Ten Cate also with Barcelona. I would like van Gaal with Ten Cate as his assistant but that would never happen.

My number one is absolutely Co Adriaanse. Attack attack attack!

(hiddink),adrianse,van marwijk,(de haan)
- and not luis. i remember before 02. even with injured players, etc. we had a very-very strong squad. and we were eliminated. that’s it. there’s no excuse for him. at barca he failed (not like cruijff or frankie),with az h’s not at his best at the moment. he’s a good coach but his days of glory are over. and fiest of all,he’s better at club level.

@ferenc: How can you say Louis failed at Barcelona!!!. He won La Liga 2 times in 1999 and in 1998, and La Copa del Rey in 1998.

Miguel Rosado: He also destroyed it by signing a dozen shit players for ridicolous amounts of money.

ok just for the heck of it(since all the canonical names have been covered),i am gonna throw in an unlikely name…Mircea Lucescu(current shakhtar donetsk coach)…he is 1 of the very few current coaches(along with frank & hiddink) who make their team play pretty nice stuff(almost tends to total football at times)…

1.We donot have a motivating manager(mentor)
2.We do not have gutsy confident players(actullly we have but we are not taking them)
3So wat we need.?
4.An experienced holding midfeilder req nos-2 who can fill up this position
Davids can fill up this position with high physical hard working and mentality, who else ?can bommmel?can dek saaw?can Maduro?can schaars? i will opt schaars .
diffence?
our diffence will be higly shaky against france, portugal, brazil, arjentina even ivory coast etc why?this is the time should look in to young bloods instead of going behind van bronk, ooiger those are all temparary adjustments.
WE need gutsy and talented players in MID and front like castelen, drenthe(especially if roban not fit we should take drenthe)
when can we expect shaars and luirink and varrl?
i am thinking abt 23 man sqad instead of first 11.
we need equal subs in each position.

hi jan,
actually i didnt know Lucescu before seeing shaktar play in champions league…i liked the way they played & then i googled his name & saw this article in guardian on him where he advocated the idea of playing total football!!& it definitely seems like his team tries to play some good stuff…ofcourse everything “matter-of-factly” bout him can be found on wiki.
In india ofcourse its impossible to see shaktar play on regular basis.

I am half friesian, as my name will tell. That puts me in Foppe’s De haan’s camp.
I find the man is well respected, and seems to have a strong moral character. Players could well connect.
