Sonneveld, I echo Caleb’s sentiments. Thanks for the great video on VdVaart. My Oranje request for a video would be for Overmars, Cocu or Stam. Hup Holland Hup! Oranje boven!

@sonneveld – great video man! Just shows how much talent VdVaart has… I really hope next year he is playing every week so he can get back into rhythm and produce more great passes like those in the video. He’ll probably have to leave Real to do that, but wherever he goes, I just hope he has a coach who isn’t an idiot and recognizes his ability. Oh yeah, and I really hope he doesn’t go to that big baby daycare centre known as Chelsea.

Yep, I’d say Stijn Schaars is probably better. Still, Oranje plays differently now.

In the “olden days”, we played 4-4-2, with Bergkamp/Kluivert, backed up by a dynamic breaker (Davids), a static defensive midfielder/playmaker and two wide midfielders/wingers (overmars, zenden, De Boer, Seedorf)

Jonk could play that defensive holding midfielder’s role like Cocu did.

Today, we have two defensive midfielders and their defensive strengths are more important than their build up. Van Bommel is pretty good actually (as we’ve seen in our last game, with his passing on Robben) but De Jong doesn’t create much. Maybe he’s not allowed by Bert, because he used to be a creative penetrative bloke at Ajax.

Anyway, Schaars can break down, pass well – short and long balls – and has a penetrative side to him as well. He can score too.

I think Stijn Schaars should replace De Jong, despite De Jong’s strength defensively. I think that with a better central defense (Maduro? Boulah? Heitinga?) we can deploy a player like Schaars who is at least as good a passer as Sneijder.
