When will a big club grab Mario Been?

On the night Mario Been and NEC won in Moscow, Roy Keane decided to quit as manager of Sunderland.

One Chris Woerts is part of the Sunderland management team. The Dutchman used to be Feyenoord’s top manager. The former Coca Cola top man longed for a job in the EPL and has the charter to find a creative coach on the continent. Mario Been is a Feyenoord man too. If you add two and two together, Mario Been could well be Sunderland’s new manager.

If you want a coach who can speak sensible about football, Been is your man. Last Wednesday, he put it to words in an uncomplicated fashion again: “We don’t have to lose against Dinamo Zagreb and Spartak Moscow, despite the differences in spending power. We have a good group and we can outfox those opponents. We only need to keep our level on concentration at the right level. Free kicks, cornerkicks…” It sounded so simple. Been trains, scouts and selects without difficult rocket-science logic. The means he has at his disposal are limited. Team building, fun, attacking football and disciplined defense and organisation.

With those ingredients, he was able to push NEC – a mediocre Eredivisie club – to the subtop. The game play is attractive, it’s obvious the players are highly enjoying themselves and NEC has the balls to play their own game against any opponent. That is all achieved by their coach, Mario Been.

Why does it take so long for bigger clubs to see him? What else should the man who already won a UEFA Cup (assistant coach at Feyenoord in 2003) achieve with N EC? Win the cup this year? “No we won’t,” he already declared. No pressure.

Any big club with a job opening should seriously consider Been. Unless Sunderland already snatched him up…

Totally agree. I have been watching NEC, and playing them makes me nervous. They will beat you, and you may never see them coming.

It’s crisis mode over at Real Madrid, the players are dropping like flies! Even the substitutes for the injured starters are getting injured:

I can’t read Dutch, can someone tell how long Drenthe is going to be injured for?

im really excited for el classico because right now being a madrid fan their is no expectations and a perfect chance for some dutch players to shine sneijder or van der vaart might be key in a big upset simialar to arsenal ever man u and chelsea

IMPORTANT: everyone go to http://www1.uefa.com/fanzone/teamoftheyear/index.html and vote for al the dutch players. We have to show the world how talented they are. I think we could get van Bronkhorst to win LB, and van der Sar to win Keeper. Robben and Sneijder are both up for LM, but I would think Ribery would probably take it.

Dirk,

just did my duty. Thanks for the headsup.

I think OOOH,AAAHHH,VannnnDahSahhh as they sing in Manchester, may be the only one with a real shout though. Gio doesn’t deserve it for LB, but of course voted for him anyway. Lets keep the fingers crossed.

dirk I watched Ribery play the last 2 games and he is very much like Robben – NEVER passes ! I really counted the amount of times he was given the ball and how often he would pass. It was like 12-1 when I stopped counting and that one pass was a desperation pass. Agree he is a class act, but boy he could pass more often, doesn’t make him so predictable. Whenever we played against such a player we always knew that he wouldn’t pass and we would block his selfish route. It worked at our level :) .

i’d say there is a chance to get a historic victory like 6-0,7-1 for barca.
