What’s it all about, anyway?

June 24th, 2006 | By: Jan | 4 Comments »

The Football WC is all about football right? Wrong! Not for everyone. For some, the WC is about money. About productplacement, branding, image, marketshares, profits.
Dutch fans are blocked in their desire to express their national pride and support for Oranje. Beer brewer Bavaria devised these nifty, funky and very orange german lederhosen with a tail (the Dutch lion) for the supporters but all who wear it to the Dutch games are ordered to take them off. And enter the stadium in their underwear! Because the WC is sponsored by a competing beer brand and this brewery has exclusive rights to advertising in the stadium. What??? I mustn’t get any criazier than this… It feels like another infringement of our civilian ground rights. Expressing yourself. Freedom of speech? What’s next? Nokia sponsors the WC and you’re not allowed to make calls with a Motorola? Rolex sponsors the WC and you can’t wear a Casio?

Again, a lame post. I know. But again, I didn’t want you to miss this picture :-)

@Jan, interesting, yesterday there was an interview with Cruijff on this subject and guess what.. he supports the sponsors..

Hiddink had a problem yesterday when he couldnt get his Mercedes bus on the trainingpitch cause Hyundai is sponsor..

but thats Johan, he was our first real proffessional, remember the Adidas-Puma thing in 1974?

btw. FIFA’s corrupt!!

That’s funny! See, I remember that JC had his own brand once and didn’t want to play on his competitors shoes and he wanted to coach Oranje in the WC in the USA but only wearing Cruyff Sports and that wouldn’t work so he said no. The little man against the big corporation, in other words. And now JC is one of them???? What is WRONG with this world? MEXICO SCORER AGAINST ARGENTINA :-)

he was always very aware of money and sponsors, he wasnt going to play in 74 cause Puma was his sponsor and Adidas for the KNVB, so in the end he played with two stripes on his shirt and the rest of the team had three stripes, how great is that!!

great game MEX-ARG, 1-1, its like the tournament is starting all over in these knock-out phase!!
