What else is new… Huntelaar scores!! Again!!

August 17th, 2006 | By: Jan | 15 Comments »

Against a weakened Ireland - the nation that wreaked so much havoc upon us in the past, football fans enjoyed the potentially historical debut of Goalscoring machine Klaas Jan Huntelaar. The neophyte scored twice and had two assists in the 0-4 win in Dublin.

After a lot of pre-match shenanigans about Ruud and Bommel’s exits, the team showed panache, eagnerness and skill. The first 20 minutes were a bit slow and sluggish, but after KJ’s first goal in the 24th minute - which was unjustly cancelled for off side - Oranje started to swing, with good positioning play and a high ball circulation. The other debutant, Stijn Schaars, played a vital part in this football show, playing simple but extremely intelligent in his positioning and running. One can almost appreciate Marco’s decision to leave the dynamic but certainly sowewhat over eager Bommel at home.

It only took another minute for KJ to find the net for the first time officially, heading home a van Persie corner kick. Four minutes befor half time, KJ found Robben with a nice touch and the Chelsea winger didn’t need a lot of encouragement to score the 0-2. Some ten minutes after the break, KJ scored a fabulous goal - a “stiffie” as it’s called in Holland - after a van der Vaart pass and with only 13 minutes left on the clock, Huntelaar found winger van Persie who scored another superb goal and put the final score line on the board, 0-4.

Oranje played fresh and eager…almost like the well-oiled machine we came to love in the days of yae-when… However, one has to say that this Ireland team had some bark, but not a lot of bite.

Marco van Basten was pleased, amongst a lot of smiling officials, coaches and players… “We played good football! That was just great to see. KJ does what he does best. And he isn’t a thinking striker, he just plays along. A natural. But, he also sees the game. Look at the two assists. And the chip he used to score number 3? He didn’t have a choice, really… Schaars was vital for our game plan in midfield and he did very very well. I am pleased.

Huntelaar was less positive. He said: “Yeah, it went all right. Not unhappy, but I should have scored a third goal. I need to be more of killer…” (WHAT?????)

On September 2, in Luxembourg, Oranje starts the road to Switzerland, against Luxembourg. Now, Luxembourg away…always tough…

Jan et all. Yes Huntelaar scored 2 goals but the real story in my opinion is that he did what van Nistelrooy does not as in play great soccer when not scoring. Just saw the highlights so far but his role in both van Persie’s and Robben’s goals was just as impressive as his goals. There is a lot of “promise” on this team, the big question is if 2 years is enough to get them the experience they need to do well at an important tournament.

In the mean time Kuyt is joining Zenden at Liverpool; interesting Dutch touch to that team. Zenden has played central-mid on Liverpool in several tune up games.
How long before Huntelaar goes to England?

I haven’t seen him play that often myself, but some punters in Holland compare him to van Basten, and then not necessarely his goal scoring but his obvious football intelligence and his down-to-earthness. They’re not happy at PSV.

saw him play a couple of times (also as a youth player),

maybe vanBasten was a bit better technaly (?) but i think Huntelaar is a better goalscorer

hes biggest improvement is his fysic, when he played for PSV they thought he didnt have the strenght to play up front, but he grew at AGOVV and Heerenveen… sure PSV feel terrible now…

agree that one of his best features is his down to earth mentality, hes from the Achterhoek (like Guus H.) there all like that over there…

hell bring us victories!!!

Who said netherlands lacked tallent!! In friendlies or qualifying round they play well, but when it comes to the world cup, the young players did not play at their best. Coz they lack experience of high level competition.

But that was a great score to beat ireland 4-0. van basten did good job there.

Hey, guys, I’m from Bulgaria and am a big NL fan. I’m reading this blog from quite a long lime and am shocked every time when I read some bad stuff for MvB. You, guys, have for a coach a living football legend and there are people who support your squad just because of your coach. You have to be out of your mind when writing bull shits for MvB. No, you are out of your mind…

KJ is a good player. But when he was not chosen for the WC team it means there was something missing.

I think Holland has sooo many talents, the big job in blending them all togather.

I can see Holland cruising in the EC08 qualifications.

Need to have expereinced players for the cup…. Who is a replacement for Van Der Sar ?

@Fares, replacement: Stekelenburg or Timmer, the first is still young, the second just a mideocre goalie..
think its true we will cruise through qualification..not very difficult..

@Lis, true, Marco is a fottball legend but hes no player anymore..hes a coach..
its great to hear that there’re people who support Holland only cause of our coach but most people on this blog support Holland, Marco has had the least critics in the media ever…if it were Advokaat…remember 2004 ,Robben…
im sure you will agree that you can always be critical towords anybody regarless of their past..

sorry, not out of my mind, just love Oranje..

We love him and Ajax!!
He really is the best striker we have at the moment, it’s a bloody shame Van Basten did not take him to Germany for the world championship. But, we are sure we’ll win The European championships with him:D
And, today is a sunday, so he will play this afternoon and we can watch him for 90 minutes! Isn’t it great?! AJAX FOR LIFE
