Weekend highlights… Updated

Or low-lights?? We’ ve got some interesting Eredivisie stuff, European goals and some nasty little injuries…

PSV Eindhoven seemed on top of things after winning their first CL match and beating Feyenoord. This weekend, they were a bit down. The mid-week cup match – Goose already mentioned it – resulted in a rather humiliating experience. They did beat their opponent, but they did so with a suspended player. So, a day after the win the KNVB kicked PSV out of the tournament. And it wasn’t the first time PSV operated as an amateur club. With Gerets as coach – it was 1999 ?? – they forgot to put Ruud van Nistelrooy on the list for their Champion League matches!!! Forgot to list him and send his name along with the rest to the UEFA… And that happened last year again, this time with John de Jong. The all round midfielder was back from a long injury and Koeman wanted to play him, only to find out he couldn’t. They are the laughing stock of Dutch football right now. And their suspension for the Cup could mean a loss of 2 million Euros (ticket sales, tv income, price-money)… wow…

Anyway, PSV drew against NAC Breda this weekend (and with another goalie than Gomez they would have lost!) while Feyenoord won against Heerenveen (2-0, goals Roy Makaay and Nick Hoffs), therefore Feyenoord is again leading the pack in Holland. With Ajax and AZ and co to play later today.

In Europe, Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi – him again – helped Frank Rijkaard win another game. And how. It’s dream team fooball in Camp Nou every week now, it seems. Henry scored thrice. Robin van Persie scored the winner – a header- for Arsenal and the Gunners are tops in the EPL.
Rafael van der Vaart scored for HSV Hamburg again, but Ruud van Gol won’t be scoring this weekend. Bernd Schuster will rest his super striker for the upcoming CL game.

Van der Sar helped Man United win another game in the EPL but he was replaced during half time, due to what seems to be a toe-injury. It’s unclear for how long he is out. Vennegoor of Hesselink was replaced at Celtic with an hamstring injury. Again, it’s as yet unclear for how long. Mark van Bommel is also injured, also his toe, but Van Basten is less worried about that injury.

Real Madrid had a lucky win this weekend. Raul was the lone striker – Van Nistelrooy was rested – and Arjen Robben, Wes Sneijder and Royston Drenthe all started. Drenthe was replaced by Guti in the second half. Real didn’t play great football but a Robben assist helped Ramos score the winner.

Ajax won against VVV with 6-1 in an easy game. Spanish signing Luque scored twice but also left the pitch injured. The Sons of Gods lead the standings now, with Feyenoord number 2 and PSV number 3.

Phillip Cocu, captain of Al Jazeera, scored a cracker of a goal in the 2-0 over…their opponent :-) . The 36 year old former PSV and Barcelona star scored with a bicycle kick. The footage can be seen at www.nu.nl, just check the headline with Cocu’s name in it and click on the video-icon.

Interesting thought. Makaay does play well and Vennegoor is injured. So, it’s either Koevermans, Huntelaar or Makaay that gets the call. I’d say Huntelaar. He is young, very lethal and he plays for Ajax :-) . Makaay and Van Basten had a bit of a rift after which San Marco didn’t select Das Phantom anymore, so I can’t see Makaay coming back.

Apparently, Van der Meyde is back in grace at Everton. Although he is back in the pack, he will have to wait his turn to get in the starting line up. “All is forgotten” were Andy words to the press.

De Ridder is back from injury but probably is not yet match fit. Expect to see him in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of Van der Meyde, I’ve been hoping he can get back into form too. He did well at Ajax (right? I didn’t see that many of his games), but not so good since moving to Inter and even worse at Everton. I thought he did pretty good as a winger in Euro 2004 although lots of other people seemed to have problems with him.

Maybe if he gets back into form we could have a right winger for oranje again?

I think van der Meyde never was more than junk really, only that he had a really high career top that Adriaanse brought to light from the dark room where it really belonged. I cant see him ever play even remotely well again. He would surely fit in like NEC or something but not in Ajax, Premier League or anything at that level.

Van der Meyde is the type of player that fits well into a well thought of system, whereas he is just not good enough on his own merits in less “educated” teams (like Inter or any mediocre EPL team). It’s not his fault, I guess. Scouts are lazy sometimes. If used well, Andy can do wonders. Actually, Daniel de Ridder is similar.
