Weekend Action…

Just a limited post on some football this weekend. Haven’t seen much, so please comment or add to my comments…
In Holland, Feyenoord took the lead in the competition based on the goal difference. The Been-led club won against Roda JC comfortably, 4-0 in De Kuip. Makaay, De Cler and Hofland started on the bench again, with Landzaat on the stands. Roy Makaay did get 15 minutes and was greeted with much deserved respect by the 50.000 fans. Mario Been: “I think there’s too much news coverage on our bench and not enough on our football. Finally, we’re number one again and we play decent football. The whole matter with the older players in unfortunate and I do wish them the best. We as a club need to treat them with respect. They’ve been signed with lots of broohaha and we were happy when they came. They don’t deserve any negativity and for all I know, I might need all of them next week! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t want them to leave. But if they’re not happy here and want to go, it’s a different matter. I can’t work with unmotivated players.”
New signing Cisse scored the opener in the first five minutes with some technical circus act trickery. It would be Jon De Guzman’s match though. Still hoping to get away this summer, he placed a pinpoint cross on Tomasson who scored the 2-0. De Guzman scored the third in the first half from distance. By that time, Roda had been played sick by the Rotterdam club. In the second half, De Guzman scored his second with a beautiful banana ball. Feyenoord got more chances to score, in particular Vlaar who hit the post, but the fans were happy as it was.
Heerenveen is normally an angstgegner for champion AZ, but this weekend the Sollied-coached team played without inspiration. El Hamdaoui scored twice for the title holders: 0-2.
Ajax hosted Sparta and fans know historically what that means: goals! But it didn’t happen. Ajax dominated for 90 minutes, Jol threw all he had at Sparta – bringing Aissati, Anita, Sulejmani – but Ajax refused to score! Martin Jol: “I think we weren’t motivated enough. Maybe unconsciously thinking we’d win this easily. And if we don’t, then we always have Suarez. When that happens, you’re in trouble and I’m not disappointed that this happened early in the season. How can you dominate for 90 minutes and not give anything away but still not score? Our pace was too low, the sharpness wasn’t there… Much to work on in the next days.”

PSV had a tough game against NAC, maybe the consistent surprise of the last years in Holland. Rob Maaskant’s team took the lead early in the game and PSV had to fight to get back in the game. Sub Danny Koevermans scored twice in the second half and in the dying minutes Ibi Afellay scored PSV’s third from a counter attack: 3-1.
FC Twente seemed to have an easy midday against RKC. The Tukkers led early in the game 2-0, but decided to pace the game down later (it was hot so you can’t blame them) but RKC fought themselves back into the game. The sloppy Tukkers allowed RKC a goal but quickly fixed things to win the game, without impressing, 2-1.
In Spain, Barca won the Super Cup against Athletic Bilbao. They won 2-1 last week and gave the fans a little party with 3-0 yesterday. Messi scored twice, the first after a brilliant sweep by Zlatan, and Krkic scored Barca’s third.
Last rumors from Madrid: the Merenguez are keen to sign Olympic sprint phenomenon “Lightning” Bolt!

Opdam was already older when Marco selected him. He then got a serious injury and Marco left him out of the Oranje squad since. He got a transfer to Red Bull Salzburg, with Co Adriaanse (back then) and enjoyed the jump. He is close to retiring now, I guess.

I liked Barry Opdam – pity about his age, he was tall, left footed and could head very well. Did he score that great headed goal against the Czechs ?

I’d like to suggest to have some faith in Wesley. He’s a very ambitious player and understands what he needs to do to make the Oranje cut. He simply doesn’t want to be bitchslapped around by Real Madrid and I don’t blame him. First they want him, they they make him important, then they tell him he can stay, then they tell him he can’t stay and then they tell him he needs to move to Inter. Well, maybe Wes doesn’t want to go to Italy. Maybe he wants to move to England. Can’t blame him. Trust him and his manager – no slouch, Soren Lerby – to come up with something. Don’t call him selfish. He’s the victim. Real Madrid are the bad guys. Go Wes!

@jan i agrre with you on wesley’s position with madrid.But just said about him orange.still i love his unpredictable goal scoring ability look at the amount of goals he scored for the dutch,I am sure he will have a very best goal/minute ratio than all other dutch midfeilders.

@jeff
Colins john was a terrific loss for orange.with his speed and physique he could do even diffending also.Anyways coach plays a big role in that age…such kind of players need coaches like wenger,Vangaal,Fergie etc that time.
the coilins had terrfic shots in his boots and in his health he resembled like the ever healthy footballer Ruud Guilt.(But this guy lacked top footballing brain that may be the real reason behind his failure).

I agree with Ferenc. People should cool it with their line-ups. Far too many and more importantly far too soon. Let’s wait and see what happens during the season. Again if for example de Jong does not play at all, he will be gone (loyalty goes only so far).
@HFayet, Yes Ajax relies on Suarez too much but how dare you say that he is too good for Ajax. Ajax is still a major name in world football, more than most clubs in the Prem. Except for Liverpool, nobody has the same pedigree as Ajax, so please don’t make comments like that. Can you imagine where Ajax would be if we could have kept our players.
The list (active players today): VD Sar, Melchiot, Grygera, Heitinga, Maxwell, Chivu, Sneijder, de Jong, VD Vaart, Zlatan, Hunter, Babel, and I am sure I forgot some others. Not a bad team. If the Dutch league was more prestigious, the competition more exciting (perhaps with Belgium and France), the tax rate lower, and the clubs allowed to accumulate exorbitant amounts of debt, we would have been able to hold on to all these players. Ajax would then be a dynasty. Suarez is a star and we need to hold on to such players.

@fares ; 1. the Guzman is not dutch so he shouldnt play in Oranje
2. Guzman is a tot. different player from deJong
btw ; for all you Den Haag fans (haha), a 3-1 victory in Arnhem!!
btw; people should not worry about Sneijder; when you are that good things will always turn out alright!
@tiju: little joke about John i presume??

@goose
i agree
the flying dutchman already have vdv, sneijder, afellay, seedorf, and reserves like s. de jong, wijnaldum, and bakkal on board.

Hmmmm…Ajax is unloading surplus players to get another striker and defender…
Hmmmm…Makaay is benched and PROBABLY free to leave Feyenoord…
Yet another hmmmm…Zuiverloon needs to play top-level football after being relegated…
Are you listening, Martin Jol? (If you are, don’t dump Gabri!)

Makaay at Ajax would be nice, but he’s just not what he used to be three-four years ago. Zuiverloon would be good for Ajax.
@Jeff,
no one is forcing you to look at the line-ups. And yes they will change as the year progresses, but last time I checked we have games coming up in less than a month. Or is van Marwijk also playing without a lineup then?

@Jeff
Everyone should post their line-ups. It sparks discussion on are favorite team and thats why were here. But on the point you made about Ajax, I couldn’t agree more. Our line-up would be one of the most formidable in the world. And all the players were developed at Ajax or bought young from other dutch clubs. And for the players you forgot Escude, now playing at Sevilla, Pienaar, the star man at Everton, Seedorf, no explanation there, and Vermaelen. So like Jeff said a fantastic team and one with pedigree.

Makaay at Ajax would give us another veteran leader and another Dutch player, something the club has been lacking.
Zuiverloon plays RB; can he play LB or CB at all? It would be a dream to be able to start him AND van der Wiel.

also rosenberg, kanu, and maduro played for ajax.

Thanks Michel-Olivier and Marc for completing the list. There is not a single team in the world except perhaps for Boca or River in Argentina with more home grown players who have made it to the international stage. Again if we had competed in the Prem we would have won the title many times and probably won the CL as well. Unlike Real, Milan, Inter, Manchester, etc, we don’t buy players we form them. Note that most players we buy later in their careers usually fail especially during the last 10 years, example Machlas, Cvitanich, Luque, Ursaiz, Sonk, Soetars, Charisteas, Sikora, Lindenburg….
Agree though to bring Zuiverloon and Makaay. Ajax wanted Makaay a long long time ago before he left for Spain.

ajax doesn’t need zuiverloon, we already have vdw, oleguer, and bruno silva

Disagree VDW can play CB I saw him play in that position when he first emerged from the youth team and he can be really good. he was especially brillant against PSV in August 2007 in the Cruijff trophy. I was in the Arena and he was man of the match. So he could slide to the center with Vertonghen and Zuiverloon RB. Anyway I doubt this would happen.

Alle goals
Feyenoord 4 (DeGuzman 2 + one nice assist) Roda nil.
I liked the last goal best.

Even better hi-lites.
Condensed game in seven minutes.
Feyenoord 4- Roda-0

I’m with Ferenc and Jeff, I can’t understand why people post so many line ups all the time… some people must post a line up every day or two (and it’s always changing)! Not saying you should stop, you can post them if you like, I’m just saying I can’t understand why people always post them so much. And I don’t think it sparks a lot of discussion because I think most people just skip over them. It would be much more productive to actually write about the players you want to talk about; more people would read it at least, that’s for sure.

@caleb,ferenec,jeff………it is just psychological satisfaction.Nothing more than that.even our intelligent comments is also a woodwork.Evrybody knows that.We all beleive that with our own line up we would play better and will win th cup.(in dreams)………………….ok
