WC Legend Arie Haan bashes Van Basten

May 8th, 2007 | By: Jan | 6 Comments »

Orange Legend Arie Haan - WC74 and 78 (remember those long distance strikes? Zoff still has nightmare whenever he ate Cock au Vin) - recently critized Marco van Basten. The Goose-man is on top of the news :-). Arie Haan said: “I don’t think Marco van Basten will be the team manager at the EC08. Both him and John van ‘t Schip are inexperienced coaches. They need a guy with extensive know-how of the coaching-craft.” Haan didn’t say who he thought should be added to the staff.

Haan doubts van Basten’s skills. “The craft of coaching can’t be learned by being team manager of a country. Marco was one of the best players ever, but he makes the mistake that everybody has those skills and sees the game like he does.”

The former coach of Anderlecht, PAOK Saloniki, Feyenoord and VFB Stuttgart is not happy with the quality of play of Oranje. “Let’s face it, we won the matches against Slovenia and Luxembourg through two brilliant moments by superb talents (van der Vaart and Van Persie). That’s all fine and dandy against small football nations, but against big nations you can’t count on that. That’s gambling.”

“It won’t be the first time that a big-name experienced coach takes over the reigns at a big tournament. Michels and Happel didn’t do the qualifications in ‘74 and ‘78. It wouldn’t surprise me if we’ll see that again in 2008.”

When asked who would be the right candidate, Haan said: I won’t name any names, but I would suggest a player with at least two WC’s on his name, good distance strikes, with experience as a trainer in Belgium, Holland, Greece and Germany, no real results as a trainer and a blown up ego :-).

@Jan, moehahahaha…good one… just ask the Belgiums about Haan and theyll get really aggitated… something with match fixing?? Do you know what happened there Jan? Know very little of the story…

btw: Haans goal against Italy in 78 is still in my top 10 favo Oranje goals ever;

1. vanBasten v Germany ‘88
2. Bergkamp v Arg. ‘98
3. vanBasten v Russia ‘88
4. Cruyff v argentinia ‘74 (first goal)
5. Haan v Italy ‘78
6. Cruyff v Belgium (’79?)
7. Rep v Brasil ‘74
8. Cruyff v Arg. ‘74 (fourth goal)
9. Seedorf v Belgium (95?)
10. Bergkamp v Germany ‘92

@Goose… Are u sure Rep scored against Brazil? I think it was Neeskens and Cruyff, actually. Rep scored a lot in the tournament though…

Haan and Standard Luik, I think it was. I think Standard didn’t want to go the distance against some other team (can’t remember who) and I think Haan and some other players approached players of that other team to fix the match a bit. Something like that. Yeah, Haan… I met him during his training days, when he worked in Germany. He is full of himself, arrogant and basically not so nice. I do think he has a good football vision, but he is just not liked so well. And that does count, even in professional football (or any sport). If you like your coach, you’ll do 1 or 2% more for him and that could make the difference…
