Van Marwijk makes a plea to Real Madrid

August 7th, 2009 | By: Jan | 35 Comments »

Oranje’s football season starts with a friendly against England coming Wednesday and will end with the WC in South Africa.

Despite Oranje’s swift qualifications for the tournament, Bert van Marwijk is not without worries. In this busy season, the team manager needs to keep his players motivated while the results don’t really matter. Furthermore, he has a couple of key players of whom the future is unsure.

And therefore, in the run up to the England game – the current number 7 in the world – Van Marwijk made a serious plea to Real Madrid’s management. “I can only hope Real Madrid realizes that they are the ones responsible for the predicament these players are in. I urge them to use common sense and not block the future of these players,” Van Marwijk said in a press conference. “I hope they can see themselves that the way they handle players and signings is unorthodox. This will – if they don’t handle these processes justly – have a boomerang effect for sure. Last winter they desperately wanted to sign Huntelaar, six months later he’s not even part of the selection anymore. They spent 27 million euros, they can’t expect clubs to pay that price now. Surely they must see that. I hope they fear for their reputation. Should they want to sign Kuyt or Van Persie in the next winter slot, I don’t think these players would even consider a deal with this haphazard management. Rafael van der Vaart is one of the finest midfielders around – Di Stefano jumped for joy when Real signed him – and he hasn’t even had the chance to prove himself.”

Huntelaar has found a new home in Milan. Van der Vaart is still looking for a new club. “I hope that process will go smoothly for him and his family and for Oranje, for that matter. I won’t abandon players that easily, but they need to play football at a good level. Do I think Huntelaar will get playing time at AC Milan? Hell yeah! Huntelaar is a smart and savvy player. I’m sure he had good talks with his new club about his role.”

Sneijder and Robben can still stay in Madrid, but it’s anyone’s guess whether they’ll start in Real games. “I can only hope,” Van Marwijk sighed.

There were no real surprises in the preliminary group for the England match. Henk Timmer has been dropped though. “Timmer doesn’t have a new club. He totally understands that he’s not part of Oranje now.” Michel Vorm is currently the second goalie behind Maarten Stekelenburg. Velthuizen of Vitesse is currently third goalie and stays home for the game.

For Elia (knee) and Boulah (shoulder) this game comes too early. Engelaar is part of the preliminary group, but won’t be part of the definite group. Van Marwijk: “Orlando made the move to PSV partly to come back to Oranje. I gave him a positive signal by placing him in the preliminary selection, but for now I chose other players over him.”

Gio van Bronckhorst is also injured and won’t be fit intime for England.

The game will start with one minute of silence for Sir Bobby Robson.

Goal
Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Michel Vorm (FC Utrecht)

I think we dont have to worry about englaar…and we should worry about our madrid players.Cannt under stand Englaar over Emmauelson…we can drop him for ever.Emmauelson is much better than Englaar.
Here some dont”do”s for orange
Heitinga as a right back -A suicide
Kuyt as a central striker-A suicide
Gio as a left back-A suicide
if he wants to take heitinga in the team, take him as a Cb not as RB.Ditto with kuyt if he wants to use him..use him as a RW not as a central striker. The guy is a good assist and he can assist wonderfully.Gerard’s and torres’s goals shows that.More over he brings some physical power also.

The same squad ! I highly doubt we’ll go far in the WC with those players (gio , ooijer, heitinga ,engelaar ) , i dunno what is the problem with trying new names in a friendly match , or even in the qualifications ! We have already qualified , We may find a solution to our problems in defense ! Shall marwijk try ( vlaar , loovens , drenthe ,maduro , de guzman ,emanuelson ) or to use bommel in the libero position against a big team like Engaland ! We’ll lose nothing !
or to play with another form , like 4 – 4 -2

robben and kuyt in the second half,
i mean we have a good team , we need to find the suitable form and we will be able to go for gold :)

i read on a hungarian real madrid site that drenthe was all right, robben was ok but sneijder (beside miguewl torres and guti) was the worst rm-player last night – actually he only played something like 15 minutes. fans are satisfied with drenthe. they say that he had made more progress in the last month with pellegrini than with schuster and ramos in the last 2 years.

conclusion: drenthe should stay (anyway he doesn’t count too much for oranje),robben will stay (he’ll play quite ften) but sneijder should go. if he stay it will be his qwn responsability. and he has to think that it’s not only about himself but about oranje as well. stupid pretentious guy if he’ll remain at madrid despite the fact that the club would use him as a substitute. he doesn’t know perez – perez is not the man who buy someone for 65million (kaka),someone for 35million (xabi alonso) and bench them for someone who was bought by the previous president (and his ennemy). hungarian madrid fans think that sneijder was awful the whole 08/09 season (due to injury and his private life) and he should go. vdv understood the situation – it seems wesley didn’t. bert shouldn’t select him for a while.

It looks to me like Sneijder and Robben will be staying at Real for a while. I’m most worried about Vaart. He’s such an underrated player..

glad to see drenthe play, this guy has a fantastic potential.
what about wesley .. i don’t wanna see him go for inter or bayern,
i mean, he deserves a real great role in a real great team.
i’m pretty sur he’s able to be a starting man at madrid before the end of season, dispite the situation.
pellegrini already said he wanna keep him, but, yes this is much more perez who decides. maybe the best way out for him would be man utd, but i can understand this feels like an echec for him, leaving now …
wait and see.

Drenthe fantastic potential?

Maybe when he grows up and stops acting like a hoodrat. Trust me, I know a hoodrat when I see one, there are plenty here in New York.

Van der Vaart will leave.
Sneijder has to leave because he’ll play a substitute role. Kaká is taking his place.
Raul will never be benched so Robben should move as well.

I am really pissed because Robben has proved himself over and over but if they don’t take advantage of his great qualities it is because they don’t know anything about football.

Now there’s a good defense and a strong midfield with the arrival of Alonso, Albiol, Arbeloa and with Metzelder back but if they keep playing Raul and Guti they won’t win at all.

Just stick with the group we have – Ooijer, Timmer, and just choose some extra out of Vlaar, Loovens, Maduro, Drenthe, Emanuelson, De Guzman, Elia etc.

Don’t see Albiol-Arbeloa-Ramos as that good though, still sadly, i think only V.d.Vaart is going to leave this summer. Maybe next summer one of Robben/Sneijder to Barca, lol :)

Guys:

I have to say that I am a Barcelona fan since Johan Cruyff´s dream team. Then I liked a lot when they were more than eight Dutch players under van Gaal-the Barajax as was called in LatinAmerica´s ESPN broadcasts-,that team played well but too many Dutchies and of course I remember Barza´s with Rijkaard and of course now. Barcelona has always been my club team as well as Ajax but in particular I love Oranje even above Barcelona and Ajax and that´s why when Madrid started buying Dutch players I started to follow Madrid´s games more than in the past because of the Dutch guys but I have never cheered for them and now that they are treating them as crap I´d go for Barcelona more than ever even that Barcelona doesn´t have a Dutchman in the squad but their style of play is similar to Oranje. Although all of us know that Barcelona´s link with Oranje has always been strong and that doesn´t happen with Madrid. Madrid´s management lacks respect and ethics, they are a pity for world football and that is why they have failed badly in Europe in the last years. There is no respect for the most important part of the game in that club:THE PLAYERS.

I think as Ferenc, that if Sneijder stays it would be a stupid mistake from him because the guy who plays his position is Kaká and the Brazilian has got talent, he is probably the best playmaker in the world when at his best and Sneijder should understand that under those circunstances he has nothing to do there. He is not better than Kaká.Period.Robben might stay if Madrid plays like Miguel-my brother-suggests because he is the only left winger they have and he can add value to the team if used. But Madrid will have to play with two forwards so Raúl “El Angel de Madrid” can have a place in the team. It must be frustrating for forwars who arrive to Real Madrid to see how an old Raúl who is almost finished sends them to bench.

Is he that powerful, is he the owner of Madrid, is he an important shareholder, is he Pelé?. I mean, we have seen Owen, Ronaldo, Morientes, Huntelaar and now Ruud and Robben almost our due to this guy. Robben is not even the same position but as Madrid has to line up Raúl then Robben will suffer in the bench due to this fact. I reckon that last season he scored some important goals in La Liga but at the highest level like in the Champions League we can see the real Raúl, a slow striker who can´t cope with top defenders now. His best days are gone and even Madrid´s fans know that. I have read in the most important Madrid based papers such as http://www.as.com and http://www.marca.com blogs how Madrid fans want Raúl and Guti out and many of them prefer a Robben or Sneijder or even Ruud instead of them-not the same case for Rafa van der Vaart-. Anyway, I´m just saying that Madrid didn´t care about finding a good club to the Dutch players, they just want to cash in some money after their crazy summer signings and that´s why the Dutch players who still play there must understand that with Florentino and Raúl they will not get a place in the starting eleven because if the coach has orders not to bench the new signings Raúl will give orders to Florentino not to bench him. My friends, I get to the conclusion that the real boss at Real is Raúl González Blanco…the most powerful man in the club, no doubt about that.

Some opinions in marca.com:

1) El valor de mercado de Sneijder es como minimo 30-35mill€. No nos olvidemos que es titular con Holanda. A mi me gusta, prefiero que se quede, tiene mucha clase y la temporada es muy larga, este tio va a jugar mas de 30 partidos este año. X.Alonso es suplente en La seleccion y pedian 40 los del Liverpool. Y tampoco nos olvidemos que el año que llego colaboró decisivamente en la victoria holgada en liga (Los cule-bras se quedarona 18 puntos).

Traduction:
Sneijder´s market value is around a minimum of 30-35 million euros. Let´s not forget that he stars for Holland. I like him and I´d rather want him in Madrid than leaving. He has class and the season is very long, he might play more than 30 games this season. Xabi Alonso is benched in the Spanish national team and Madrid asked 40 million euros for him to Liverpool. And let´s not forget that in the year that Sneijder arrived at Madrid he helped the team to win La Liga with many points of difference vs. their rivals. (Barcelona was 18 points below Madrid).

2) Pues si todos los negocios son como el de Huntelaar, menos mal que el dinero no es mio, jejej

Traduction:
Well, if all the transactions and negotiations are like Huntelaar´s I feel relieved that the money it is not mine, hehe.

3) que pesados con sneijder…. no se vende!!!! no se va a ir!!!! ya vale!!!!

Traduction:
What a bad treatment to Sneijder…He is not for sale!!!He is not leaving!!! That´s it!!!

As we can see even in Madrid are laughing of their board and some are even supporting the Dutch players. But Madrid´s board are treating them as crap so that´s is why I suppor van Marwijk´s ideas as many of you have pointed out. Good weekend to all.

completely agree with you,Mario.

one more thing. sneijder is one of the 3 most important players in oranje. it means that i don’t want to see the architect of our play sitting on any bench. kaka is better than him, perez wants kaka,c. ronaldo and xabi alonso in the starting eleven (in important games, not in copa del rey bullshits). wesley should understand it.

could you imagine that in the past bergkamp, davids, frank de bour would have accepted the same situation? or gullit, rijkaard, van basten and koeman? or cruijff, neeskens, van hanegem and haan?
of course, not. true wesley is not as good as them, but still a worldclass playmaker. i hope that in this situation his big ego will win and go somewhere where he can shine. (i read that real madrid asked inter 25millions for him – guess the price will go down a little bit, between 15 and 20million and he has to go there – he would be the optimal playmaker inter needed between the midfield (only holding midfielder) and milito, eto’o. (and he would have the privilegy to play together with my favourite striker, samuel eto’o. i want to be clear: i’m a barca fan but didn’t appreciate the way how the club treated samu. a little bit the same as madrid do with our dutch guys.)
Mario: you support exactly the same teams as me: oranje, barca, ajax.

Wesley would have almost had the same superstar status as Kaka if his second season at Real had been as good as his first.

Tim Krul, age 21, came on for Newcastle today at half time due to an injury on Steve Harper and single-handedly saved the point for the magpies. He had at least 4 stellar saves to keep the game notched at 1-1.

Ferenc:

We finally agree hehe. And yes, I support those teams. My first love was Oranje when I was just a kid watching the Euro of 1988 and since that then I started supporting Ajax specially after they won the Champions League of 1995 and Barcelona since Johan C. became coach there. So, if one day you come to México or I go to Hungary and one of those teams is playing we can go to a nice bar and have some beers watching our teams!

How much might Sneijder play for Real, on average over the season, given that he will not be a starter? 10 percent of total playing time? 30 percent? If he does not play a lot, he will obviously not be fit and ready for the WC–and that is major problem for the Dutch. The same, I suppose, applies to van der Vaart. I confess I’ve never seen his quality at the international level, but he’s at Real so obviously i’m blind. I’m not worried about Robben because I know that he’s destined to be hurt in the runup to the WC and probably won’t play much!

One other thing: I find it odd that Van der Sar has retired from the national team but is still playing for ManU. If he is still motivated enough to play for one of the top teams in the PL and the world, why would he not give the WC one more go? Seems a little odd to me.

yes, drenthe has still lot of things to learn, but physicaly and technicaly he’s got a huge potential, i remember the great under-21 euro he made, shining player when he simply plays football.

kaka is better than him (sniejder) ???
ok, according to me that’s why Wesley doesn’t want to leave madrid !
he’s not under anyone, i mean, this guy is awsome
and he’s got his ego, he wanna prove how precious he’s for a team.
maybe he’ll play less than 30 games this year .. ok, so he’ll be fresh for the WC.
I can’t tell how much players made a great season all along the year with their club, to be out of form with their national team on the summer
(for exemple c.ronaldo 2008 or wiltord 2006 hold their club during a whole season, and were just too tired at the end to be useful for their country).
so wesley as sub during a half season ? .. why not, i just hope he’ll play enough to keep the top level rythm

Gentlemen,
As a madrid fan and also a fan of the Dutch National team, I am really upset at some of the talk of a Dutch Sale at Madrid. Not fair to the players, most of whom have done well since arriving, BUT consider this, a lot of this is press speculation, nobody has quoted Perez saying anything other than the fact Madrid needs a leaner squad to improve the chances of EVERYONE playing ENOUGH. My opinion of the players below;

Sneijder; Nobody wants him to leave and he doesnt want to either. He is a class player who has done well and class players dont run from challenges. He might not be better than Kaka but he’ll get games and he’s younger and will outlast the brazillian.

Robben; Great player, loved by the club but who generally spends more time in the treatment room than on the pitch. If he doesnt play enough its because he is injured. His pace and eye for goal makes him a must keep. Nobody has made any firm offers and Madrid have offered him to anyone either, so forget the press talk he’s staying.

Ruud; Great player, but very similar to Huntelaar and more experienced and thats why Huntelaar was sold. Ruud is a certainty and it is not good to keep two players from the same country who play in the same position in the same club. Klaas is a great player but not a smart buy for Madrid, it was for HIS benefit that Real sold him to Milan.

Van Der Vaart; similar to the Ruud vs Klaas situation, he was bought as a filler for Wesley and the deal turned sour. I like him but he will be better off elsewhere.

Drenthe; Good prospect but he has underperformed so far. He may stay but his appearances will be limited especially after the arrival of Arbeloa.

As for the Raul matter, Real has tried to replace him but he has outscored all his rivals for his shirt for 15 years, including Anelka, Morientes, Owen ,Ronaldo and even Pedja Mijatovic and that’s why he’s still there. If you want to bench Raul, OUTPERFORM HIM! Ruud has done that that’s why he’s still there with a sure shirt.
