Van Marwijk dreams of title in 2010…

Bert van Marwijk wouldn’t be surprised if Oranje snatches their first title in the WC2010. In an interview with FIFA, Van Marwijk confirmed that Oranje will go for gold. “Honestly, if I didn’t believe we had a shot, I wouldn’t have taken the job i.e. wouldn’t have traveled to South Africa.”

Oranje and Van Marwijk are perfectly on schedule in the qualification. The first three games were won and there’s a five point gap with Scotland. “I hadn’t expected we would win this easily in our first three games. We’ve started very well but the downside is now that everyone thinks we’re there. But there’s still five games to go.”

“Still a long way to go, and I don’t want to underestimate Scotland. They beat France twice in the last series, although they just missed the ticket to Euro 2008. If Scotland wins in Amstrerdam, we’ll still be up, but the gap is significantly smaller than…”

The Dutch team manager confessed it was a tough choice between Feyenoord and Oranje. “I had a long spell of doubt. I never intended to leave the club so soon. Feyenoord is in my heart. But I’m doing this now, and when or if we qualify I won’t be satisfied with anything less than the title.”

Well certainly this man knows what he wants at least. Having a clear goal will impact in a positive way to the players and now there is a huge difference from the team that went to WC 2006 to the one that will travel to S. Africa.

The Netherlands still haven´t qualified but I´m pretty sure they will and if the mentality is like the one that van Marwijk says then things can go very well. I think that Oranje has always had coaches that refuse to take the responsability to say that they want to be champions and that the objective is only that. I think that is why Cruyff never took the job and Hiddink now that is hugely succesful won´t do it either. I mean, for Holland a second place is not relevant now because it has gotten that twice so if a guy like Cruyff or Hiddink takes the post they will be under more pressure to get the title. When Hiddink was the coach in 1998 he had had some bad spells in Spain and in Turkey so he was not supposed to do so well like he did in 1998 and in Euro 1996 he had a horrible tournament for the reasons we all know.

But I like Bert´s attitude towards the World Cup. Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, Kuyt, Babel, Huntelaar and many more of our players are playing in the best clubs in the world and have two major tournaments with Oranje under their belt. A quiet and relaxed coach like van Marwijk is what Oranje needs at the moment and although I know it will be extremely difficult to win the World Cup I also think we have a fair chance to do it. I remain optimistic if not I would not be writing in this blog, but I´m 100% oranje for life.

great. this is the way a manager has to do. oranje is one of the 3-5 best teans of the world, maybe only spain and argentina look stronger,so it’s obvious that bert has to go to south africa for the gold.

Mario: sure that van persie, kuijt and babel play in the best clubs in europe. but this is not the case of robben and co. you cannot say that about a club always eliminated int the 1/8 of the cl without any problem. this is a myth with no reality. i’m not joking: on the international front even ajax is stronger than real madrid. and one more thing: real’s results in spain are good because of the referees. have you seen what the referee did against bilbao? pathetic.

@ M-O You’re too harsh, have you seen how many goals Italy or France conceed, even Spain conceeded goals against Belgium. I think after the permanent removal of the oldies Ooijer, Gio, De Cler. Our backfour isn’t all that bad, sure it’s not like they’re all Roberto Carlos, Nesta or Terry, but England with hyped up, Terry, Ferdinand, A.Cole didn’t even qualify for the EC. It’s not specificaly about the quality of defenders. You can win a title even with a “mediocre” defence, you just need to build in extra safety, that’s where De Jong-V.Bommel-De Zeeuw-Schaars come into the picture. BTW, there’s nothing that says whe won’t be seeing some defenders break trough on higher level in the near future.

BTW, Heitinga most likely to start for Atletico against Villareal today, so is Boulahrouz for Stuttgart, Maduro stayed on the Valencia bench, V.Persie didn’t play either. Kuyt average game for him although they won 4-1?, Babel got some playing time, but not really long enough to make an impact, but looked decent. V.d.Vaart still on the bench for Real, i would move to Juventus or Chelsea if i were him.

@ Alex
france play with 2 defensive midfield and italy with 3 and they still suck.
even with bommel, schaars, nigel… without vds i will never trust this back four(heitinga-oojier-mathijsen-gio).

Alex, I think van der Vaart should go back to Hamburg or try a big club but not the most powerful ones like Juve or Chelsea now. He would be succesful in a team like Manchester City which is a club that wants to grow, has money and needs players like van der Vaart but I agree with you, he has to leave Madrid at the end of the season. Ferenc, about Madrid, it´s true that they are not the best version of Real Madrid but they have been the Champions of La Liga twice in a row and although in the CL they have failed badly in the last five years, Madrid is the biggest team in football history. 9 Champions League speak for itself and they will bounce back in Europe pretty soon, they are not among the best of the world right now and I agree with you on that but because of their history they will always be followed and considered as a top team.

Apparently, Hiddink suggested to Chelsea to buy Vaart since Ballack is likely to leave…

VDV going to Chelsea would be a tremendous move for him…Hiddink would put him the positions that best utilize his talents…look at Sneijder in the RM game, Ramos plays him centrally behind the strikers and he looked like he was getting back to his usual high level…he and Robben looked very good together.
