Van Hooijdonk/Konterman: Scotland? No walk over!

March 26th, 2009 | By: Jan | 17 Comments »

Konterman scored…

Pierre van Hooijdonk (Celtic) and Bert Konterman (Glasgow Rangers) played in Scotland. The former internationals shed a light on the upcoming game: “They’ll go until they drop.”

A lot of people expect an easy win. How do you see that?

Van Hooijdonk: ,,That’s up to Oranje. When the players reach their normal level, I can’t see this go wrong. Van Marwijk has a very good group and is able to almost use all his best players. I expect a lot too. Only when the Scots peak and Oranje has an off-day, a surprise is possible.”

Konterman: ,,It won’t be a walk over. That 6-0 of 2003 was an incident. But I do believe Oranje will win. We ooze confidence now, so at least a 1-0 is in the cards. The biggest strength of the Scots is their passion. They don’t train at a very high level, but when the weekend comes nearer, you can see a metamorphosis. They will go until they drop.”

How should Oranje try to break down the Scottish defence?

Van Hooijdonk: ,,It’s important to find the space in between the lines. When you go along with their game, you could easily be taken for a ride. Don’t enter challenges. Keep the pace high and pass and move holes into their defensive wall.”

Konterman: ,,The best thing is to play the positioning pass-and-move game fast. In technical and tactical terms, Oranje is superior. If everybody does what he needs to do, Scotland will make mistakes. And if that isn’t possible, individual skills like Robben’s or Van Persie’s will create the difference.”

Do you visit Scotland often?

Van Hooijdonk: ,,I do, for sure. Last month I was at Celtic. That club has a special place in my heart. It was my first adventure abroad and it was just tremendous. Everytime I visit Scotland I am touched by the warmth of the people.”

Konterman: ,,I do a couple of presentations for Rangers’ sponsor every year. I’m treated as a movie star when I visit Glasgow. I could live there. The people are warm and there’s tremendous respect, more than in Holland. I’d happily endure the rain for that.”

and guess where the Master JC is at the moment and will be for the game against Scotland ???? In Scotland !!! – He was Guest of honour at a dinner and of course tomorrow he plays golf at an invitational meet. I can understand why JC cold be so intrigued with golf as it is a game you have to master yourself. YOU againts the course and your own stubborn ways sometimes. Does anyone know JC’s golf handicap ?

Are you in the US now? I think ESPN will broadcast this game online for free to US IP users. Try this link:

Usually they also have 1-2 Eredivisie games every weekend, and most of the CL games. Quite good stuff!

Mr-Quarter finalist-Sven goran Erickson

So Hiddink factor will kick liverpool out of the CL,and the Barca and bayern are lucky they will meet Guus hiddinski and a walkover is guareteed.

Well done Brenda – great that this site can offer all tese tips on where to watch the game. Its not shown in Singapore eventhough 8 Euro WC matches are shown !!! arghhhhhhhhh!!!!
ilham Heitinga is definitely out. vd Wiel seems to be favourite for RB tho I think Bert will put Boulah there, even Marcellis.
Tiju – sorry buddy we seem to disagree on many things – I am a BIG Tendulkar fan but I guess you get a real overdose there. Also think your country is one of the rocks of civilization evolution with a rich history going far beyond the year 0 which we have learnt. You should be proud of India and one of my favourite sayings comes from one of the BIGGEST men to ever walk the earth (from India)- “You must be the change you want to see in this World” so start changing the football scene there Mate !!!

Finn – Marco’s handicap is same as mine (5) – guess JC is still puzzling about the left arm straight policy and how to curve a ball right to left hahaha. 11 is ok but for someone who plays as much as he does??? Maybe it’s a “cocktail handicap” for all his guest appearances. Think he has a golf course/resort in Spain right ?

@carlos buddy
I was a cricket player till i was 20year old.I started playing when i was 11 year old.Within 4 years i started playing with bigboys of our area i mean when i was 14 year old i used to play with 21 year old guys.Even thogh My height was 5ft.7″ i could ball very fast.At the age of 19 i became an established bowler even thogh my batting was simillar to Rahul dravid in my area. But at the age of 20 i was forced to stop my bowling due to an injury of myrightshoulder. This is all about my cricketing career.
Dear carlos buddy-
I have studied almost all the game.I like all sports except cricket. Why i hate because it is stupid, timekilling, lazy, idiotic, pitch deciding, wind deciding, weight of the bat deciding, area of the boundry decidng, height is necessary for fast bowlers,Very difficult bowl against dwarfs, glwingness of the bat deciding.so this game never desrves to be a TOP SPORT.Finally it will kill other beautifull sports because of its lazyness charactor.
and
my final words i played, watched cricket for several years.i played infront of bigcrowds so i am elligible to critisize this idotic game.

@Carlos: 5 handicap is oustanding!! Good for you. Here in NY and my work environment there is a lot of golf but of all the people I know there are only 2 that have have a better one than you!! Well done.

Personally I don’t play golf anymore as I was in an accident many moons ago where I broke both my elbow and my wrist in my right hand, so anything involving an item that puts pressure on the wrist or the elbow(golf, tennis etc.) is off limits. I was terrible anyway. I still enjoy the game though. If you need a caddy, let me know (but make sure that pot of chili crab is simmering while we are trekking around the course).

Tiju – Wow brother you sound like me…not so tall but can still bowl quick. (sorry for bragging guys) I made my first grade debut at 17 still at School and made headlines. Played with and against established Test cricketers but let it go due to a career move. Played for Queensland High Schools, also faced one Jeff Thomson (remember him ?).

Finn – I can shoot 75 but just as easily shoot 85-92 depending on the mood of the day. Most guys who play cricket usually have a low handicap in golf too. Much more so than footballers.

I am still annoyed I cant see the Holland game…just glad Ferenc isn’t here after bragging so much about all the football we see in Singapore.

Guys who aren’t able to watch it on t.v., you can try watching it online. Here’s the site I always use:

http://www.myp2p.eu/competition.php?competitionid=&part=sports&discipline=football

Some of the links are direct streaming links, some of them need a special program to view (sopcast, tvants, etc). I have sopcast on my computer and I often use it to watch games, or else I just watch them streaming. Either way, it’s much better than just following the score online!
