By the way, it is one of the underrated forces... the fact that a player can be the numero uno at his club, bit is only numero 8 at the national squad. That is not something you can "rationally" adjust. Sometimes, as a coach, you need to make tough choices, like Van der Kuylen / Van Hanegem in the 70s, or Netzer/Overath in Germany. You had the different Mollers in Germany (Hansi and Dieter?? )... Genghini / Platini. Lampard/Gerrard. Totti/Del Pierro. There's many examples where the team manager didn't want too many captains on board. With Vaart, Persie, Sneijder, Seedorf, Van Bommel you'd have that. Add Sar and Gio to the mix and you need some smart psychology to make everybody except their roles. I think the WC1990 was partly a disgrace for us, due to that too. Rijkaard, Koeman, Van Basten, Gullit, Vanenburg, Schip... They were all the big boys in their respective club teams (AC Milan, Barca, PSV, Ajax).

And that's what coaches call balance as well. Not just defense or offense but also waterbearers and stars... Eleven stars not win titles do you, Yoda said :-).

@ Goose: Dickie doing something for nothing hahaha... :-)

Anyway, Dick doesn't get the international media recognition for saving ADO like JC got for Ajax. Dickie is always a bit the little loser, isn't he? Still I hope he will rescue Ado. They need it more than Ajax.

In the Mark/Marco thing, I think they were both wrong and both made mistakes. I think Mark assumed he was an important player for Oranje and Marco thought he wasn't. That was issue no. 1 and Mark's mistake. Secondly, Mark expected more respect and Marco didn't really give him that. Marco's mistake as well as Mark's. Thirdly, Mark doesn't know how to handle his emotions (see last weekend's HSV match) and he has a nasty bite. Marco doesn't take shit though, and told him off.

What also works here psychologically (with Ruud too), is that both Mark and Ruud adored Marco as a player. They had posters of him in his room, wore shirts with Van Basten on it, etc. In other words, he was their hero. And that's dangerous. Because Marco is no God or Legend or Hero. He is a human being, with mistakes, flaws and shortcomings. And he smells on the toilet too. So, when that image of "your hero" suddenly vaporizes, some sort of additional anger comes to the surface. Like "how could he do this to me??"... And adoration turns into spite and anger and frustration.

It's all there... :-)

@goose: i'm back of couse after almost 6 weeks in south-eastern asia (from hongkong to singapore),but i have too much work like usually after long holidays. as a matter of fact i'm not a huge van bommel fan,and seriously think that he should have done as clarence and ruud did. but unfortunately he doesn't have the intelligence and the calm of these 2 guys. i understand your arguments but i understand stephen's too. actually i'm happy that in my team there is no tkis kind of arshole:-) and life is beautiful: barca win, real loose. btw: how was oranje-croatia? i haven't read anything about it,just saw the goals.

i read as well that edgar wouldn't stay at ajax because of marco... not surprising. kessler sucks.

Traitor? - no.(again, some of my words may have been a bit harsh, or implied ) Frustrated, hot-headed, immature? - yes. He let his emotions dictate his status on the team. Oh well, I'm sure he'll be back for WC2010, maybe..hahaha

Why can't we just get rid of this Kesler dude? He is not only clearly useless, he is arrogant, and treats Dutch soccer like it is his own small family business.

There surely must be some kind of board that he at least technically reports to, or are they all as retarded as he is? This smells a long way of the old Dutch East Indian company...
