Van Bommel won’t be invited for Olympics

February 25th, 2008 | By: Jan | 28 Comments »

Foppe de Haan in Studio Voetbal: “Mark won’t be invited for the Olympics. Of course I would like to have him on board, any coach would want him, but it’s simple. He said no to Marco for Oranje. The Olympic team can be seen as Oranje 2 and when a player doesn’t want to play for Oranje, I can’t invite him for Oranje 2, can I?”

De Haan does want Makaay. “I can use a smart and experienced striker. After Huntelaar, there’s a bit of a gap. Makaay plays fantastic at Feyenoord and he supports and aids the youngsters. As far as I’m concerned, he can pack his bags.”

actually yesterday van bommel demonstrated one more time his real character. i wouldn’t like to see such an arrogant arshole in my team. in this case i’m definitely on marco’s side. (of course it doesn’t mean that his a good manager.)

Well, my 2cents:

1) Van Bommel never thanked for Oranje. He explicitly said he’d like to play for Oranje, but not with MvB as manager. That’s different.

2) If Marco can dismiss players, why can’t players dismiss the manager??

3) Why is the KNVB negotiating with Van Marwijk while at the same time they pull this stunt on his son in law? What are they thinking?

4) His obscenity after being red carded is silly, really.

Jan, players can dismiss the manager if they wish with the obvious risk. Bommel did and will not be playing this year. With that, Foppe obviously didn’t care for Marks conduct and now won’t be selected for the Olympics. Sometimes ‘burning bridges’ has a greater effect than just the initial two parties involved. Others seeing the resume may not like what they see.

Hasn’t Mark proved that Oranje isn’t really that important to him? Isn’t Oranje greater than any one man? and should playing for the great Oranje outweigh any personal problems you may have with an individual? I’m not saying vBasten is innocent, but as a player, more often than not it is better to just shut up and play. Bommel chose otherwise and is reaping the reward, however just or unjust we may think it is.

Henk Kesler has fukced up again, excuse my French. I’ve had it with this guy. Now, it seems Kesler has forbidden De Haan to select Van Bommel. But technically, the Olympics are on after the era Van Basten. On August 7 the Games are on and Bert van Marwijk will formally be team manager. And you can bet that Bert will call on his son-in-law and you can bet that Mark will say yes. So, by then, Mark is no longer banned and should be able to play.

The KNVB has realized this blunder and has frantically contacted Bayern Munich to get a hold of Van Bommel. But, Bayern’s board has swiped the egg off Kesler’s face by announcing that Bayern won’t allow Van Bommel to take leave for the Olympics. So, at the end of the day, this is one big non-issue.

Leaving Kesler with another disgraceful act and putting strain on the Kesler-Van Bommel-Van Marwijk relationship.

No wonder we can’t have world peace….

Personally, I think van Bommel is exactly what Oranje needs right now, and thank goodness that Bayern did what they did because otherwise we could have been close to never seeing him in oranje again.

Yes, van Bommel can sound arrogant, but his passion and intensity are exactly what we need on our team. He puts his team before anything else, and doesn’t take any nonsense. His little “stunt” last weekend was quite stupid, but it also shows that he doesn’t put up with any shit (and I also thought it was quite funny). We need some of this mental (and physical) aggession on Oranje.

Don’t get me wrong…I’d like to have Mark on the team, but he and he alone guaranteed that he will not be on the team, by way of running his big fat mouth, which makes his a first class betrayer of Oranje fans everywhere as well as a first class idiot. MArk is not on the team because of Mark. Thanks a lot buddy. Go piss off somewhere in your multi-million dollar vacation home this summer while our loyal players fight for the European crown.

oi stephen; thats no way to talk about mark!!

i can assure you that he loves Oranje as much as anybody… he clearly said: “i never wanna play for Oranje as long as this manager is in charge” .. its about the manager (Marco) who has always treated him like a little boy…everybody here in Holland knows that the ‘Cruijff camp’ (Rijkaard, vBasten, Cruijff) never liked Mark, he never could do anything well, Cruijff was always picking on him and so did San Marco…. think we all know by now what a terrible peoples-manager vBasten is, it showed on many occassions (Ruud, Davids etc.), Mark was dropped and taken back aboard like no other player…players who were 19 on sitting on the Ajax bench were never dropped, and Mark was/is playing for the biggest teams in Europe… Mark just tought enough is enough..how can you play under a manager who has no trust in you??

this is all vBastens fault, not Marks! my guess is hell feel afwul during the EC but he will hope, like all dutch, that Oranje will do great

i dont feel betrayed by Mark but by Marco!!

Kessler should be sacked!!

OK, ok, maybe I’ve been a bit harsh. I haven’t commented on this blog in a while and needed to make a splash in hopes that everyone would remember who I was. hahaha. I can’t help but think though, that if Mark had acted like a professional, and less like a prima donna, he’d be on the team this summer. He is responsible for his actions and words and he alone guaranteed thru his own words that he wouldn’t be playing for Oranje. I personally would have advised him not to say that. Part of being a top-class professional is working thru things that aren’t going your way, especially with the powers that be. Not crying about it and then banning yourself from playing. Boo-hooo. Don’t have much sympathy for it.

i remember you any time stephen! haha ..

think the point is: could/should you play when you know you cant play your best cause you know the manager is just waiting for you to make a mistake? or just shut up and never perform anyway

well, i have a kind of a soft spot for Mark , hope his father-in-law will make him captain of Oranje!! hahaha…remember; you always need an asshole in your team (and were not big on defensive midfielders anyway..

btw; Jan; did you hear..Dickie is gonna safe DenHaag!! hes taking on the role as adviser just like Johan did with Ajax!! .. guess hes working for free once in his life!! haaha

btw2: where my mate ferenc..he should be home from holiday by know…

He should have just shut up and play. Instead he let vBasten off the hook by never having to consider Mark ever again – even if Mark is playing at a very high level. If Mark doesn’t say anything, vBasten has to acknowledge Mark’s play one way or another and justify his selection to the media and fans over and over again. The pressure is on.
But now, he doesn’t even have to think about it.

good point stephen, that is exactly what ruud and seedorf did. they made it known they were unhappy with marco but they left the door open, and in the mean time they continued playing great at some of the biggest clubs in the europe until marco was forced to acknowledge them.

@stephen; well; think the problem was that Mark felt he would NEVER get that acknowledgment(?) form Marco .. he would always be treared as a second pick
but hell; i see your point, just dont see it as the act of a traitor, just as from a guy who just had enough

Why can’t we just get rid of this Kesler dude? He is not only clearly useless, he is arrogant, and treats Dutch soccer like it is his own small family business.

There surely must be some kind of board that he at least technically reports to, or are they all as retarded as he is? This smells a long way of the old Dutch East Indian company…

Traitor? – no.(again, some of my words may have been a bit harsh, or implied ) Frustrated, hot-headed, immature? – yes. He let his emotions dictate his status on the team. Oh well, I’m sure he’ll be back for WC2010, maybe..hahaha

@goose: i’m back of couse after almost 6 weeks in south-eastern asia (from hongkong to singapore),but i have too much work like usually after long holidays. as a matter of fact i’m not a huge van bommel fan,and seriously think that he should have done as clarence and ruud did. but unfortunately he doesn’t have the intelligence and the calm of these 2 guys. i understand your arguments but i understand stephen’s too. actually i’m happy that in my team there is no tkis kind of arshole:-) and life is beautiful: barca win, real loose. btw: how was oranje-croatia? i haven’t read anything about it,just saw the goals.

i read as well that edgar wouldn’t stay at ajax because of marco… not surprising. kessler sucks.

@ Goose: Dickie doing something for nothing hahaha… :-)

Anyway, Dick doesn’t get the international media recognition for saving ADO like JC got for Ajax. Dickie is always a bit the little loser, isn’t he? Still I hope he will rescue Ado. They need it more than Ajax.

In the Mark/Marco thing, I think they were both wrong and both made mistakes. I think Mark assumed he was an important player for Oranje and Marco thought he wasn’t. That was issue no. 1 and Mark’s mistake. Secondly, Mark expected more respect and Marco didn’t really give him that. Marco’s mistake as well as Mark’s. Thirdly, Mark doesn’t know how to handle his emotions (see last weekend’s HSV match) and he has a nasty bite. Marco doesn’t take shit though, and told him off.

What also works here psychologically (with Ruud too), is that both Mark and Ruud adored Marco as a player. They had posters of him in his room, wore shirts with Van Basten on it, etc. In other words, he was their hero. And that’s dangerous. Because Marco is no God or Legend or Hero. He is a human being, with mistakes, flaws and shortcomings. And he smells on the toilet too. So, when that image of “your hero” suddenly vaporizes, some sort of additional anger comes to the surface. Like “how could he do this to me??”… And adoration turns into spite and anger and frustration.

It’s all there… :-)

By the way, it is one of the underrated forces… the fact that a player can be the numero uno at his club, bit is only numero 8 at the national squad. That is not something you can “rationally” adjust. Sometimes, as a coach, you need to make tough choices, like Van der Kuylen / Van Hanegem in the 70s, or Netzer/Overath in Germany. You had the different Mollers in Germany (Hansi and Dieter?? )… Genghini / Platini. Lampard/Gerrard. Totti/Del Pierro. There’s many examples where the team manager didn’t want too many captains on board. With Vaart, Persie, Sneijder, Seedorf, Van Bommel you’d have that. Add Sar and Gio to the mix and you need some smart psychology to make everybody except their roles. I think the WC1990 was partly a disgrace for us, due to that too. Rijkaard, Koeman, Van Basten, Gullit, Vanenburg, Schip… They were all the big boys in their respective club teams (AC Milan, Barca, PSV, Ajax).

And that’s what coaches call balance as well. Not just defense or offense but also waterbearers and stars… Eleven stars not win titles do you, Yoda said :-) .
