van Bommel to Bayern

August 26th, 2006 | By: Mike | 4 Comments »

Mark van Bommel’s time at Barcelona is at an end. Barca have agreed a deal to send van Bommel to Bayern next week.

He’s also been left out of the squad for the Oranje’s first two European qualifiers.

In the mean time while everyone is criticizing MvB for leaving out van Nistelrooy and van Bommel two of the absolute top clubs in Europe have had their managers agree with him. After Ferguson decided he had no use for Van Nistelrooy; now Rijkaard has come to the same conclusion about van Bommel.
Are these players done? Well, let’s see. MvB, Ferguson and Rijkaard seem to think their best days are behind them. 16 Million armchair coaches in Holland seem to think that these guys are the guys to build a team around for a tournament 2 years in the future.
The way this is playing out I think will show MvB right in the long run with both van Bommel and van Nistelrooy being has-beens by the time 2008 roles around.
I can hear the arguments already, something along the lines of “ But look at what the French did with experience!” but it doesn’t wash. There are 2 kinds of veteran players. The kind that become positive mentors to the youth around them and become the leaders that help gel the team together and the other kind that still thinks of themselves as the stars that a team should revolve around but can no longer perform that role to the level required. I don’t see either of those guys belonging to the right kind to have on board for veteran leadership in a young squad…

The official story is that Frank Rijkaard didn’t want Mark to go, but van Bommel stated that he needs a lot of games in order to keep his rhythm (how do you spell that word??). Since Barca has 1) a lot of great players and 2) a lot of matches to play, chances are that Bommel wouldn’t play a lot. So he asked if he could leave the club. Bayern is his favorite club and his father in law (van Marwijk) works and lives in Germany (coach of Borussia Dortmund).

@Robert, you can also say: two of europes top manager (Felix Magath and Fabiop Capello, both i rate much higher as managers than Rijkaard or vanBasten) say that vanBasten is wrong… were talking about the biggest club in the world (Real) and the biggest club in continental northern europe (Bayern), think vanBasten is very lucky with Huntelaar, im sure hell make everybody forget vanNistelrooy

im very surprised you dont see either vanBommel nor vanNistelrooy as players with great motivational skills,
i disagree, i think these are the two players with the killer mentality that very few other dutch players have, two players who both know that to be succesfull you need a team, really dont understand why you think they see themself as stars???
