Van Basten wants to take the next step

June 15th, 2006 | By: Jan | 3 Comments »

Marco van Basten called the performance of Ivory Coast against Argentina “impressive”. He thought IC played pretty good football and thought the IC team did not get what it deserved. Tomorrow, van Basten is eager to learn if his team is able to hold their own against the Elephants. “We are getting better every day. And that should be our focus. And I do want to dominate against them, that should be our intention. And I want to see it executed better than against S&M”.

Van Basten will most probably start with the same team. He doesn’t care too much about the criticism on some players. “Ruud van Nistelrooy played his first ever match on a WC. He desperately wanted to show what he is capable of doing. And that doesn’t always work out well. But he did pretty good in the build-up, so I don’t see any reason to take
him of.”
Since Rafael van der Vaart is match fit, van Basten has more options on midfield. Still, it seems van Basten will use Sneijder as central midfielder. Or does he? “For the moment, I think we will play like we did against S&M. But, on the other hand, IC is a different type of opponent. And you need to see if and how you want to adapt. Or maybe you just don’t want to adapt…”

In other words, MvB is leaving us in the dark again…

Damn.. I really want to see Van der Vaart play. I was hoping for a second half substitution against SerbiaM.. even if only for him to get into the game again. Maybe the midfield will suddenly be magical but if he doesn’t play him we’ll never know :(

Two or three changes for the starting line-up; one or two of the three subs to be debutants. One-nil will do. Breathe easy. Respect them. Enjoy it.
