Van Basten wants to stay on…
In the next weeks the decision on Van Basten’s future with Oranje will be made.
In the beginning of December the KNVB and Van Basten will negotiate and after Christmas the announcement will be made: will the team manager stay on after the EC? All involved stay numb about the subject, but it’s clear that the KNVB has not approached any one else. And Van Basten hasn’t talked to Ajax about a coaching position.
The position of the KNVB is neutral. But there is no intention to quit the relationship after the EC. The decision makers await the talks and will decide during those discussions.
Van Basten seems to be eager to stay. He emphasized last Saturday that he sees a lot of potential with the boys. It sounds cynical almost, after the narrow win over Luxembourg, but Van Basten was serious. If you see potential, you want to reap the benefits (read prizes).
The people around Marco confirm that he wants to stay on. Finances will play a role. It’s a known fact that compared to his colleagues and predecessors Marco van Basten is paid a mediocre salary. The KNVB wanted the inexperienced coach to prove himself first.
However, most options (Jol, Hiddink, Advocaat, Adriaanse) will command a much higher paycheck and it’s the question if the KNVB is willing and able to comply.
In the players’ group it seems Van Basten has a lot of support. Although, the KNVB will talk to some senior players about their relationship with the team manager. Think Van der Sar and Van Nistelrooy.

I’ve got a question that really has nothing to do with this but I really need some opinions. In my mind, I think the kit numbers will probably be v. nistelrooij 9, v. d. vaart 7, v. persie 11, sneijder 10, in Euro 2008. Is their any reason to believe this won’t be true, besides injuries.

Yes, i remember in the past they used the alphabetical order for the numbers… Some players also have some sort of belief about numbers, (JC and 14). I think Wesley has that too… I’d say:
Sar 1
Clarence 7 or 8
Wesley 6??
Vaart 7 or 8
Persie 10
Ruud 9
It’s anyone’s guess, really… Goose?

actually i want van basten to stay. we cannot get hiddink, the others - i don’t know… jol failed at tottenham, advocaat no thanks, adrianse is overestimated.
before the wc i hated marco not selecting edgar, clarence, hunter, etc. the portugal game and his tactics there was a very-very bad decision. but since he has learned a lot: now everyone is there - except van bommel and kromkamp. i’m quite sure that the returno of kromkamp is a matter of time. van bommel? it was not the same case as with rvn or clarence. oranje can live without him. (anyway i don’t like this kind of football player - at barca even edmilson and motta were better than him.)
so right now we have evryone in oranje,we play 442,we have no more landzaat (and hopefully soon kuijt) in the team. marco believes in his guys. if they reach the semi final next year they should stay together until 2010. if hiddink called the knvb i obviously would change my mind. but unfortunately this is not the case. one more thing: we have these players, everyone know their qualities. we don’t have better players. we can dream about solid defence but if we lack the material…

@ferenc; what that mate?? youre pro vanBasten now!!
i still want him to go… im sure there are many options and im sure theyll work better than vanBasten… just wait till the EC08, if the same thing happens as happened at the WC06 you will be screaming for his departure like you did in the old days! haha
still think we need an asshole player like vanBommel but he wont play till vanBasten is gone..nothing i can do about it
btw; if Hiddink doenst qualify (wich he wont) could he be the new manager of the aussies instead of Advocaat who has choosen the money (like he always does!)?

Goose: i read that Aussies might want Neeskens (he had Hiddink’s assistant, but i don’t want him to leave barca and i’m sure that he’s not a good coach). Russians want Hiddink to continue his job.
about Marco: he’s not the optimal solution, but he has changed (rvn,clarence,442) and the list of his potential successors except hiddink doesn’t convince me. wouldn’t say that i’m a pro Marco meanwhile knowing our possibilities i’m no more against him. at least he knows these guys. i appreciate some of his decisions for ex that he doesn’t select drenthe: everyone (including myself) wanted him in oranje and he is a nice chap but doesn’t play at real. (when he plays he’s usually bad.) it would be bad for him to be titularized at this level.
tomorrow i hope we won’t win because if we win we’ll have more chance to be in a death group at the ec.
btw i’m happy that you’re back:-)
