Van Basten wants Dutch to Combine force with Belgium

Concerned that the best Dutch players are being bought up by teams throughout Europe, Marco van Basten has called for a joint Dutch-Belgian Football league. Van Basten says, “I think the Netherlands and Belgium should set up a joint competition. This way we can counter the (financial) strength of countries like Britain, Spain, Italy, France and Germany where they just splash money about.”

It is an interesting concept but do you think adding teams and money from Belgium will really make a difference for players who can go play for gobs more money in England, Spain, Italy, et al? Maybe the Luxembourg league should be added into the mix. And Lichtenstein. And Estonia.

Nah. Let’s just leave things the way they are.
