van Basten, make a decision.

March 5th, 2006 | By: Matt | No Comments »

I’m not sure what is running through Marco van Basten’s mind lately as he decides his World Cup eleven, but the speculation in the press and by the players themselves is not helping the cause. I can’t think of another team with so much public speculation over players positions. Why doesn’t van Basten end some of the suspense and give us all a few hints.

Could you imagine Sven Goran Eriksson pulling this with Gerrard or Beckham? Okay, bad example, but still very strange behavior from the Dutch gaffer. This bizarre selection process is really having an effect on the players.

Edgar Davids is now using the press to make his claim on the national side. Check out soccenet for the full story. Why was Davids left off the team for the Equador match? Davids is playing well and is proven at the international level. Why doesn’t van Basten talk to Davids? It’s a bad sign when the players are fishing for information from the press instead of the manager. A player of Davids quality should not have to guess the intentions of the manager, he deserves more than that.
