Van Basten criticizes play-offs in Holland

October 5th, 2007 | By: Jan | 5 Comments »

Marco van Basten expressed his worries about the play-offs. The team manager reacted on the defeat of almost all Dutch teams from the UEFA cup. “It is very very sad. A black day for Dutch football. A lot of players are robbed from the opportunity to develop themselves on international level. And we need to ask ourselves what it is we do wrong. Our playing calender gets fuller and fuller. Clubs have more and more games to play. The objective of the play-offs, for instance, was to increase and improve our level of play. Well, if this is the result, we need to scratch our heads and re-assess our strategy.”

It was a terrible summer for Holland soccer though. Everyone that was really really good got sold… there was no way things were going to work out for any of the Holland teams, to be honest I’m surprised AZ survived.

I don’t know why that terrible thing happen to Dutch teams. We may blame that we don’t have money and the good players want to move to bigger leagues. But how about Portugal, Scotland, Greece leagues?
And I also don’t understand why Ajax sell Sneijder and Babel for only low prices? The Portuguese clubs can sell Pepe, Nani with higher prices even they’re not as famous as Sneijder and Babel.

@lerkot; haha//agree too… it doenst work.. almost none of the game during the play-offs last year were sold out!

it doenst work in competition and it doenst work in Europe.. the KNVB should stop the play-offs and go back to the old system

Az is the only team left with any change of glory in Europe…they go through a bad spell right now but things will start to improve (lot of injured players getting fit) they just needed to survive and they did

Psv has nothing to win in the Cham.Leg., theyre not good enough

If Van Basten is worried about the playoffs, he is in good company with former Colts coach Jim Mora. Watch this 49 second clip.
