Van Basten: compliments to the boys!

September 12th, 2007 | By: Jan | 18 Comments »

Team manager Marco van Basten didn’t want to hear any criticism after the late victory over the mediocre Albanian team. “It was a deserved win. We played with discipline and concentration. The boys deserve a compliment.”

It was tough playing real football, he said: “They kept on nagging the ref and dug a big hole in front of their own goal. You really need to sides to get a good match. They defended fiercely, which made it hard for us. The spaces were limited.”

Van Basten was happy with Van Nistelrooy’s late goal. “Of course, I am happy and relieved. And we did try to force the goal. We did what we needed to do and luck helped us a bit, and it should…”

The suspensions of Van Persie, Sneijder and Melchiot where a setback. “Yeah, that sucks. We were pretty agitated at times, but we didn’t let that overtake us. Again, I feel we need to compliment our players for that.”

The late goal by Ruud van Gol resulted in a little party on the pitch. The “saviour” couldn’t grasp the moment himself. “It was such a tough match. And you that before hand. A goalless draw is seen as winning the World Cup here and these chaps compensate their lack of skill with physical play. And at the end of the day we win because at last a ball comes through from the flanks. It was tough, but winning in the last seconds is something we worked hard for. The explosion of joy was immense, jeez….”

Wow, what a game. Yes, Jan, it was my first live Dutch euro qualifier. Very rough, seems to me alot like the Portugal game, with a better result. I must say I can see why Sniejder cost so many Euros, what a effort. Beutiful goal by Ruud, sort of a sissor-bike kick. And a fire work exploding right by one of our guys heads, this thing got out of hand. Those Albanians remind me of a bunch of Tie Domi’s. The video below Tie gets into a fight with a fan during a game. I think goose will like this one.

Ironically Tie is a Albanian Canadian. (Born in Canada to Albanian parents).A Hockey player noted for his rough play and fighting. I wonder if its in the Albanian gene.

I saw the highlights of the big upset in Paris. Scotland 1-France-0. WOW!!!!

Hi Tjeerd, yeah mate… The Albanians have a bit of a rep. Seedorf already said he expected a very physical game.

I haven’t been able to watch it and I hear/read different opinions. MvB and the players seem relieved and happy with how it went (we got the best result possible type of comments) where as the analysts and punters slammed the Dutch for a very poor performance…

Well, the first half was incredly boring. Other than the vPersie/Vangjeli incidents, there wasn’t much to watch except the OG that Melchiot put in. In all I think there were 3 set pieces that were retook because of shoving.

It’s ashame that switching out Heitinga for Ooijer didn’t change much about the bald build up. Melchiot could’ve been much more impressive, but for the moment he lacks the skill. Emanuelson should start next match on account of what he did today.

vBasten should try putting Jaliens in RB instead of Melchiot.

Other than that, as always, the width was a real problem. van Nistelrooy had to act as a playmaker at some moments, with vPersie coming always quite close to the center. Babel, I have to admit was a bit better than last game, but we either have to do 4-3-3 with true wingers, or 4-4-2 with vPersie as SS. Maybe Robben (when healthy) as left attacking midfielder? Sneijder on the right of MF, Seedorf right in the middle with support from De Zeeuw?

On another note, I have a couple questions. How do you pronounce “De Zeeuw”? Does the Z have a T sound to it “Tzeuw” or what? Oh and is Sneijder pronounced Schneider or Sneider (is there a sh sound of just a s sound)?

Sneijder is pronounced with an s (no sh)… znaider…

De Zeeuw : the Z is a Z… (no T sound).

De Zaow is probably how you’d phonetically write it.

Jan. The game was enjoyable for me to watch, the Albanians are a dirty bunch. I even taped it. The ref ended the game 3 minutes early when a firework exploded a few metre’s from a Dutch players head.

tjeerd, if the Albanians are a dirty bunch, then so are the Dutch. It was a physical game from both sides. Our defenders made some nasty tackles, but so did the Dutch players. Also, what did you expect, that we were gonna let Van Persie and Van Nistelrooy just walk around and shoot? Obviously, it was going to be a physical game.

tjeerd, hehehe, it’s true that Tahir Domi did have a problem with temper and that’s true for all Balkan peoples. Another well-known example; Zlatan Ibrahimovic (half Bosnian, half Croatian). Another example; Lorik Cana, hehe. But I have to say the Dutch were not quiet either. Sneijder and v.Nistelrooy were also aggressive at some cases, and Van Persie was begging the referee for an early shower. v.Basten replaced him and that was the right thing to do.

actually hate Domi… only thing he could do was take a beaten and still stand… check the tube for the Domi v probert fights..Domi got his ass kicked evry single time

but.. ofcourse Albania is gonna make it a psysical match… would be stupid if they tried it the footballing way.. Snejider made some dirty fouls too

we were lucky.. a draw or even a loss wouldnt have been unfair!!

6 minutes extra time were cause of 7 yellow cards and a red…thats standard FIFA rules

it ended after 2 minutes cause of the fireworks wich was thrown

C’mon guys… let’s call a spade a spade…

It seems Melchiot’s goal was a real goal.

We did play lousy.

A draw was probably more fair.

Let’s not get carried away and dragging racist, monetary of geographical reasons in the discussions…

well we cant be blamed for not beeing realistic and critical on our own team

everybody agrees that Melchiots (the black guy) goal was a proper one

everbody agrees that a draw and even a loss were possible

@Diti; i should have said some of the things i did and i appologise…

i just dont think that the ref. was giving Albania a hard time (ex. for the own goal)

grtz

Diti: “The referee gave 6 minutes (not 5) extra, because wanted to give Dutch a chance to score, and he ended it after 2 minutes because the goal was scored”

why do you say the 6 extra minutes were given for the Dutch to score?? How come it’s not 6 extra minutes for Albania to score?? I mean you keep talking about how much you were shutting down Van Nistelrooij, so you shouldn’t have been worried. Maybe Albania could have stolen it if they played a more positive game and tried to go for the win instead of just setting up a defensive wall and playing for a draw.

And of course the ref is going to end the game when fans start trying to injure players and throw fireworks at them. It’s just common sense.

6 extra minues was too much. The only time there was a major stop was when Cana, Sneijder and RvN began arguing. And that lasted 2 minutes. Add that to the other bs throughout the game, then 3 minutes (at most 4) sounded reasonable. Considering how the game got completely out of hand, “Riley the Moron” had no other choice but to call it off. More cards could have been shown if he had continued.
