Van Basten annoyed with criticism

Marco van Basten is annoyed with the crticism on Oranje after the 0-1 win over Albania in September.

This time, he started the press confference about the 24 definitive players for the next matches with a statement.

“Some people reacted offended with the fact that we were happy after that victory. Matches against countries like Albania are always tough. I am still happy and satisfied with the 6 points we got after Bulgaria and Albania. And, I truly feel i should compliment my players for their work and their discipline. I am satisfied with the way they executed their tasks.”

Because of the two victories, it is almost certain Oranje will qualify for the EC in Austria and Switzerland. Possibly, Oranje will become one of the group leaders in the draw.

“See, that’s almost funny. We cop a lot of criticism but we may end up as group leaders for the tournament.”

Van Basten also reacted on Arjen Robben’s return in the group. He was away since March due to a knee-injury. “Robben is a welcome addition to any team. We will have to assess if he currently has the level needed to add value to us now.”

Vennegoor of Hesselink had to bail out due to his hamstring injury. “I think Huntelaar or Kuyt are able to fill in that pinchhitter role in their own unique way.”

Van Basten selected a group of 24 players again. “That’s ideal for training purposes.”

The team manager will have to improvise a wee bit against Rumania. Playmakers Van Persie and Sneijder are suspended, as is defender Melchiot.
